The success story of Udit Narayan.
Here is the success story of the great indian singer, Udit Narayan.
Just improve pronunciation in Tamil Sir, you are a great Singer.
No image-managed guise, conceit, pretence or airs. Just a whole lot of talent and a musical repertoire carefully shaped over the years - that's
Udit Narayan, the humblest yet the most gifted singer in the Hindi music industry today, well a popular name in south india too.
Like all success stories go, Udit Narayan has a past of sheer toil and hard work preceding him.
Born in a small Nepal-India border town to a farmer father and singer mother, he triggered different hopes and expectations in his parents. While his father willed him to study and choose a steady vocation, his mother believed that singing was what he was cut out for.
Udit's own aspirations were obviously music-inclined, and soon after passing out of school,
he joined the Katmandu radio station as a folk singer and sang in the Mythali language as well as in
Nepalese. But all along, the urge to belong out there in tinsel town was strong.
After about 10 years as a singer with Katmandu radio, in 1978, he received a scholarship in music from the Indian embassy. And that's what triggered his real journey of perseverance and toil.
He moved to Mumbai and trained in classical music at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for close to eight years.
And all along, he approached music directors in the hope of finding the right prospects.
His first break came when music director Rajesh Roshan offered him a small assignment in the film
Unnees Bees, where he was to sing with the legendary Mohammed
Rafi, his childhood icon. Udit also sang for R D Burman in the film
Bade Dilwala, but the the assignments being rather small, his work went unnoticed.
Remains the question of his first-big-break. It came when the now established, then struggling
Anand-Milind recommended Udit Narayan's name to filmmaker Mansoor Khan who was on the look out for a fresh voice to suit debutant Aamir Khan in the film
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, (Pahla nasha). Udit seemed like the ideal choice and was signed up.
The film went on to become a blockbuster and with it the Udit Narayan had arrived. And like they say, there has been no looking
back.
He continues to record for the most sought after of music directors and with his original and versatile voice delivers a remarkable hit eight out of ten times. With scores of hits, awards and a very rewarding career behind him,
Udit can now sit back and watch the progress of his budding singer-son, Aditya
Narayan.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir, due to hit screens later this month features two mellow duets,
Chupke se sun and Socho ke jheelon ka, in the voices of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. A rollicking Udit is back in 2001 with such hits as
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Kasoor and One 2 Ka 4. With strings of chartbusters up his sleeve, it remains to be seen whether the singer weaves his magic this time round as
well.
Udit is a well known name in south india too. He was first introduced in Tamil by the great music director of india, A R Rahman in
Shankar's, Kadhalan, the song, Kadhalikkum pennin. The song was by Udit Narayan and S P
Balasubramaniam. Then came a string of offers from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films.
Udit Narayan has worked with most of the music composers in south, like A R Rahman, Deva, Vidhyasagar, Keeravani, Mani Sharma, S A Rajkumar and many
others. Though his songs become big hits in the regional languages, he has been accused of wrong and ill pronunciations, and killing the
language, if that the case, then even the music directors are to be blamed for it.
His son Aditya Narayan is also an upcoming singer and has sung for A R Rahman in Rangeela and Taal (the child voice).

Forum frequented by Thamizh speakers ??? are they any different from the people who make those Udit songs as big hits ???
The foremost problem you suffer from is generalizing everybody's taste as one.
--- If thats not everybody, it is atleast representhing a majority thats big enough to make a song as a HIT.
I never asked others to change the tastes and start listening to UN's songs. There is already a big bunch out there doing that and making all those songs as hit songs. All I am asking is, making all the hullaboo about banning a singer for his Tamizh accent. That sounds like as if talking on behalf of all Tamils and mobilising all Tamils for this cause !!! So , doesnt it sound like generalizing ??? If as an individual you dont like a singer or a MD, all you can do is stop listening to him / her.

The hit ratios of the northie singers does not reflect their talents.
--- Who said that they are more talented just for the reason of a higher hit-ratio ? I never said that and everybody knows that.
it reflects the "sucking up loser" mentality of the south Indian audience. Fat north Indian rejects as heroines and tamil-killing ordinary vocalists as playbacks --- There it goes. If thats something that has to do with the public's mentality , then they have to change. Maybe, THEY should stop listening to his songs and making them hits , condemn his accent and ask MDs to ban such singers. But as you see the public beg to differ and thats not happening clearly !! As Udhaya said, if you can't generalize everyone's tastes, you cant go out and ask people to do all those. It is upto the individuals.
Atleast Thank God that UN is not awarded the Best Singer award in TFM so far.

Maverick,
You started a thread to praise a guy. I stated my opinion. Where in my posts did I rally anybody for anything? Quit moping, enjoy what you like and move on. Time and again you keep bringing up hits. I didn't make these songs hits. I don't care about these songs. Projecting public opinion on me is not going to change my view. If public opinion matters to you then, enough people like him; you can rest assured that your view is well supported. Is that what you care about?
The only reason I bothered to comment in this thread is the ridiculous comment that bad pronunciation is okay, as if that's a trivial issue in a song with specific lyrics in a specific language.
If you don't know Thamizh very well, go ask someone who does to translate what UN sings in "Kaasumaela", when he sings "note-ai thaan", it sounds like a swear word in Thamizh. Even this is probably okay with you. It isn't okay with me. That's the issue here. Don't bring in regionalism and racism crap to the debate. TMS, PS, SPB are all non-native Thamizh singers, all of them my favorites because they took pains to render a language with the respect it deserves.
If you like somebody. Just say that. I have no problem with it. But when you try to argue that their obvious flaws are nothing, that's when you get into trouble. If you want to build a shrine for your favorite, then build a website for UN, I won't come there and bother you. This is a public forum where contrary opinions are a given.

Udhaya
Who said I started this thread !! Atleast, it is not even someone else in my name !!
And I dont care whether people like UN or not. As you said, I care about only a certain things and others become trivial to me to nejoy the music (film music, especilly). And I repeat it again, I never asked you / someone to start listening to UN songs . If you dont like it, dont listen. People like me and many more are gonna listen to his as it is now and dont bother about it. You made it clear about your views and I made mine and with all due respect, I close it off here.

Whenver Udit sings tamil songs, they should list his name as 'U did it' Narayan. His voice can be used to force out confessions from criminals who will exclaim, "Stop! stop! I did it!"
