Deva & Kamal seem to have pulled it off yet again, after their successfull teaming up in AVVAI SHANMUGI...after watching the trailer, i felt DEVA has done a good job, going by just the FIRST IMPRESSION.And the trailer had one specific dance number...well...who said KAMAL is getting old ?

The movie was thoroughly enjoyable with Crazy Mohan and Kamal at their elements. The 'Kaathadikku kooda vaal irukku, athukkaga korangu parakka mudiyuma' pazhamozhi was the best!! :-) Simran looked pretty but totally out of place and sorts!
I kinda enjoyed the 'sakalakala vallavane' and 'endi choodamani' numbers. Rest were terribly noisy! Felt that a composer like Manisharma could've done better songs if the need of the movie is just catchy, time pass songs.

NagaS: IR'a ithumathiri frivolous (athavathu vishayamatra, time pass and funny) movie'kku music poda solvatharku konjam koochama irukku enakku! Even for Thenali I thought ARR had no work there and whatever he does is bound to be criticized!
MMKR is a cult classic as far as I'm concerned. I must've seen it about 50 odd times but still watch it when it comes on TV sometimes. The only other comedy that I watch everytime its played is KB's Thillu Mullu and its original hindi version 'Golmaal'!
But seriously, do you think IR deserves such a movie like PKS? I mean the movie is splendid but the scope for music is absolutely zero here. They are forced on the script. So I dont think people like ARR or IR should even be thinking about it.
Deva and Manisharma are the common man's composers IMO and can adapt to any kinda scripts whether the music is important to that movie or not. Their work is just to be part of the movie the way the director asks them to. And they do it perfectly. But yes, given a superior script that demands they can perform extremely well too, like Deva for Aasai.
IR and ARR anyway do less movies per year and I really dont think that such movies should part of that small list! Deva and Manisharma do such movie all round the year so it will not affect them or the movie in anyway!
PKS is probably about 25% of MMKR so I'd consider it just above Thenali (which dragged in many places, Mouli is better than KSR in comedies with Kamal, I felt) so in that sense, PKS is a mere funny timepass.

You are right Karthik ... There was a place where BGM could have made an impact (When Kamal asks simran, 'ellaamee poyyaa' and two, three scenes after that), Deva managed it with 'EeeNdi soodamaNi' ,

Karthik S,
I agree with you. But, let us see in a different perspective also.
Let us take Thillu Mullu and MMKR. The MD is selected for the movie in its earlier stage (i guess so). So the oneliner for these movies is a family full length comedy entertainer a similar description to PKS (might be thillu mullu had a precursor in the form of golmal but still forget about it). At that juncture one can similarly argue that there is little scope for MSV/IR to show their musical ability in that kind of comedy films. Had Greats like MSV or IR shunned those movies citing that as reason, we would have lost atleast two gems of TFM, raagangaL padhinaaru uruvaana varalaaru and sundari neeyum sundaran gyaanum.
IMHO, In reality very very less movies are/were made which had/has eye on musical ability of the MD, Greats convert many of other films as their oppurtunities to show their ability. Argument sake let us take, say, 50% of MSV/IR films were having good music. So do we have to think that those movies were made for the sake of MDs? We can list a long set of movies which seemed to have less scope for musicals and had splendid music from the greats like KVM, MSV, IR. In Rahman's case an immediate example would be Pavithra.

Kupps:
Nalla logic. I agree that a composer has to work within the kind of scripts he's presented with and succeed within those parameters even if that movie has very less scope for music.
By that logic, all that PKS demanded was catchy item numbers and Deva not giving us those might be a failure on his part. You are right there!
Aanalum, I'd feel terrible (personally) to go and ask a person like IR to compose catchy item numbers for a fun movie...I have his image as a highly intelligent composer...an image of a veteran music man who has reached a certain stage in which he should (IMO) not waste his time or talent doing numbers which have no significance to the movie or to his career. Since ARR is just about 10 movie years old I think he can afford them to some extent, but surely not IR.
If you ask me what kind of movie IR should be making...I'd say some different and interesting movies...for ex. maybe Aalavanthaan, Nandha, even 12B to some extent as the basic premise of the story was new...IR maybe could've played around with the time factor considering the movie is about one person in 2 parallel dimensions! IR's interpretation of the kind of music it requires might have been intellectually different and stimulating that a market friendly and amazingly catchy score by HJ who is there to earn his 50 lakhs per movie.

adhuvum sari thaan (aruL naan chari-nnu s(c)olladhadhukku mannikkanam engooru colloquial pazhakkam vida maataengudhu).
but if it were me in your place and have access to IR i would still go to him and ask him whether he is interested to take this project. coz he is the person to decide upon his needs (to show his ability or not). he is a genius whereas im not and hence i cannot decide whether IR would be (rather should be) doing this film or not. in such situations, i would prefer to be like the directors of many of trouser's movies.

Hi,
I saw the movie yday and hadnt heard most of the
songs before and was very pleasantly surprised
to hear it in the theater. Though some had a
familiar tone, it was all really good.. deva
has done a really nice job.. even his BGM was
adequate.. certainly not an IR.. but better than
SAR.. and quite decent..

Personally, I think Avvai Shanmughi was better than PKS - song wise and movie wise.

IMO Avvai Shanmugi is THE best in terms of comedy/songs/BG in recent times as far as Kamal's comedy movies are concerned. Its my all-time favourite.
