Hi sat, didn't see ur reply. :-) Cud have saved mine. Anyways, any luck with 'ShBharanam' & SB "keyboard confusion" u had with thenali song?
- From: satsona (@ 203.199.192.162)
on: Thu May 9 06:32:42 EDT 2002
hi IR_fan, no , after that i was looking to other songs, so didnt attend to the thenali song.
so the confusion prevails:-)
Hope any of IR, MS, Sindhuja, Ram etc. clarify this!!
btw, your song DB is very good, but it is IR songs based isnt it? have to listen to many of the songs in rare raagas.

Thanks Sat. Yeah, IR songs basically.
And Thenali song, ShBh is what even Prabhu (my work-mate & ardent ARR fan) feels. He plays keyboard too.

Satosana,I feel ther's no answer to that question-"it is like that "wonly""!:-)
one person percives it in 1 pitch,so it sounds like 1 rAgA,another person percieves it in another pitch,so says it's another rAgA.I dunno for the "how-many-th" time I'm repeating this, hoping to get a concrete answer from someone:WHAT IS THE CRITERION FOR DECIDING THE RAGA OF A SONG?
Like,is Andhi mazhai Ramani or Vasantha or can be both??(It depends on how each person hears it-if the 1st line is MaMaMaMa,GaMaDaMaGa...it is Vasantha,if it is SaSaSaSaNiSaGaSaNi....it is Ramani)Same discussion was going on abt. Sundari from KM(which unfortunately was inconclusive)-3 people came up with 3 raagaas!-VagulAbharanam(IR_fan),KEravAni(IR) and
Hemavati(me). The fact is that all these 3 are shruthi-bhedams of each other. Now,what was the "intended" raaga of the M.D?
Someone,pl. help!

Sindhuja, here is where 'prayogams' or 'usage phrases' figure in. That will probably hint what the intended raga was.IMHO.
Our MS explained this long back, and i will try to give the same example given by MS. Like 'Nilavu Paattu' from Kannukkul Nilavu is Thodi scale/notes, but usage/feel is Sindhu Bhairavi.
There are a couple of websites that highlight these cliches of every raga.

Guys.,
doesn't "Churidar Anindhu Vantha Sorgame" sound like Madhyamavathi(marubadiyum UlaraLa?)
- From: Sindhuja (@ 203.197.186.28)
on: Thu May 9 13:09:50 EDT 2002
Hmm...,but IR_fan, for the songs that I have mentioned, esp. andhi mazhai,I feel both Ramani and Vasantha r equally probable(i.e no special prayogams-IMO).And Sundari-I was dead sure it was Hemavati-until u guys came up with those other rAgAs.This shows that each rAgA(not all, though)"sounds" diff. to diff. people.

folks - en thalai enna nalungu thENgaaya ? indha uruttu uruttareengaLE ? "Velaiyaththavan" i indha threadukkuLLa vara vidaadheenga..appuram naara adichchuduvan :-)
Sindhuja - A ragam is not a "set of notes". It is a mood in itself. If the mood is not reflected in the song, I guess we cannot strictly call that song to be in a particular raga.
IMO, all these excercises whcih we do here to find a raga are just for the sake of a better understanding of swarams and swara sanchaarams. If we try to "fix" every film song into a raga, it is sacrilege. What we are trying to find here are the "shades" of raga that have been used by the great film composers and try to appreciate their genius and criticize them in case they are banal. There are many songs of MSV (one example - "thendraladhu ennidaththil solli vaiththa sEdhi ennavo") which do not seem to be in any particular raagam but just a fantastic melody. If we try to dissect this song, we will find that the charaNam has a wonderful structure that is uncharacteristic of film songs. The first, third and fifth lines use G3 where as the second, fourth and sixth lines use G2. It is like singing two ragams one after the other. And the usage of M1 - M2 is another thing to watch out in this song. Nuances like these are the ones which, under the shawl of raga, we tend to appreciate.
If u want a raga for every song, well..I remember the discussion I had with Srikanth sometime back. He said "if u want a raga - eat its - Karaharapriya for iravu nilavu ulagai rasikka ninaiththadhu" :-)

digression
I have been listening to Vijay Siva (for the first time) for the last couple of days. Any views on his singing/performance and other pertinent info? Thanks.

on: Thu May 9 15:15:12 EDT 2002
Arularacan,
Vijay Siva is a Sr. most disciple of Sri. D.K.Jayaraman and he adheres to DKP style. He is considered to be a child prodigy and GRAMMATICALLY well-versed in music.
Though lots are said high about his gramatical knowledge, somehow he fails to appeal the mass who prefer Unnikrishnan. Anyway, as far as i know( i had a good chance to discuss music with him and his brother Manoj who's a percussionist, some years back in chennai), he was really too good to share his vast knowledge.
If you need more concert/ cassette specific reviews on him or any carnatic musician, please browse thru' http://www.carnaticmusic.com/reviews/
Hope this helps

Anu - thanks!
aruLaracan, as Anu said - he is a great classical singer - very strictly adheres to the traditional style of singing. He does not appeal to the masses because of that - he does not compromise on the quality or content to draw huge crowds for his concerts and does not care to make his music "jana ranjagam" - he is a staunch disciplinarian when it comes to carnatic music!

thanks anu and IR. I dont know why i didnt listen to him for this long. i really liked him! i also find that his voice is quite female-like (really high pitched for a man) which is kinda cute. yes, i can see that he sings like DKP.
- From: IR (@ 4.64.202.214)
on: Thu May 9 17:04:35 EDT 2002
aruL, his guru, DKJ used to sing with his sister DKP for a very long time - in the female pitch!! When he started giving solo concerts, his pitch was also pretty high - most of his students followed him on that! Even Nithyashree for that matter - infact most students from the DKP/DKJ school sing in high pitch.
- From: IR (@ 4.64.202.214)
on: Thu May 9 17:12:46 EDT 2002
Interestingly enough DKP's pitch is quite low :-)

I think MS and Sindhuja have hit on a very pertinent topic in terms of what constitutes a ragam. It is not just a set of notes or scale for sure although certain types of "sequences" and frequency deviations do help in creation of the mood. Which brings me to the next question. For instance in HFM (Hindi Film Music)- which I am more familiar with there are many songs that have contexts that help create the mood. For instance Yaman songs like "Jab Deep Jale Aana" etc. bring out the evening atmosphere like lighting of lamps or awaiting for someone to return home. Can the bona fide Tamilians (not the proxy ones like me)
comment on songs where the words and the picturization help bring out the entire mood of the ragams?
