This 'so-called' film critic from REDIFF.COM says 'ABHAY' (Hindi Version of ALAVANDHAAN' is a crap movie. The link is given below...
http://www.rediff.com/entertai/2001/nov/13abhay.htm
How crucial was 'music' a crucial factor for a film like ALAVANDHAAN?

Bharath,
"kamalhaasan a mental asylum inmate for arnd 20 years has little chance to pick up american english..."
If "Gunaa" can drive a car what's wrong with this?:)

tigger,
saying "i wont patronize kamal's movies because of their sexual references and content " is one thing
saying "kamal is violating our culture and hence is wrong and shouldnt be doing this" is another
kamal, though is an artist and his work is subjected to public critisism... he still has to do his thing... he still has to work and present things he believes in. so in the precedence of opinions his comes before ours.
if he thinks he is great enugh to adapt the world to his opinions well its his perogative.. i wud say he's got his thinking right but needs more stuff!

well guna character atleast was roaming around in the freeworld.... i wud atleast take him to be a moral equalant of the "rain man" in that he was "slow" in some things and "good" in others..
thats how his character was potrayed...and driving a car didnt seem so much out of reach...
i used to know someone called "mangamadayan" in mylapore off devanathan street nearing P.S school. he cud drive a cycle... :-)
neutral fan wud argue.... that kamal was exposed to cable tv in the asylum( a big fat chance of that being a fact! considering most jails dont even have a decent toilet) and so picked up americanisms from a decade old cable tv.... well thats what i call support!

Bharath,
Gunaa was mentally retarded and driving a car as the automatic next step seems very difficult to me.
In case of "Aalavandhaan" how about this scenario:
Why couldn't he have had a audio-book of "Learn to speak American English" in 60 days"?I'm sure we have them in India.:)
These are just my subjective opinions.

Correction:
It should be "automatic next step to riding a bicycle".

no! u got my example wrong! the cycle was totally a different context but i gave the example to show that there are real life characters close to what was shown in the movie...
driving a car is not a very big skill .. but thats not my point...
the avenues for learning to drive a car that were available to a free roaming guna was more than the avenues that nandu had to , first of all continue speaking in english fluently and remember what li'l he learnt in school and also develop such an accent!
well again there is a theoritical possibility as u say but just that the probability is low...
again this is also not my point... my point is kamals insistence on using a lot of english... i guess he can do better than that. he has an perspective problem here... he looks at good english phrases the catchy ones and wants to use them and so ends up using a lot of english... which really even in a semi-english speaking tamil nadu is inconsistent and odd...
"i'll kill ya... you know i'll kill ya" the dialogue when he bangs the public phone down...
the expressions and phrases when he talks wih manisha are cool but quite unbelievable ...
he should rather start from scratch and think of cool tamil phrases and set a trend rather than succumbing to the temptation to use the cool english phrases!
he cud have taken a cue from Dr. hannibal lecter when he said " simplicity clarise...simplicity"

are "Shah Jahan" and "Manadhai Thirudi Vittai" such worse films that make you to commit suicide("taking Aalavandhaan")? ;-)

I feel with Aalavandhaan...Kamal has raised the bar for Indian commercial films....somebody has to do it - Kamal has taken up the mantle...maybe he is not commercially successful...at least he is not giving us run-of-the-mill stuff !

DEAR BRAT oops sorry, DEAR BHARAT...after reading through all your postings, it was really pathetic to find that you could not grasp even a single point out the story. That is not KAMAL's problem, it only shows your understanding level is awefully poor. And there is something called POSITIVE PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA which is the NANDHU character. Let me try and explain...I had asked you the following set of questions and your miserable head that u seem to unnecessarily carry over your shoulder could not manage even a single reply. So, here goes.....
1) Why does he say," I can smell her here..She must have been here...where is that girl. Has she escaped.?" (Asks Manisha about Raveena) - You dumbo..."paranoid schizophrenics" often report of smells that are not present at all. Got it?
2) Why would he take a plunge into the Ballon and walk straight towards a speeding car? - Inspite of my giving the clue about POSITIVE SCHIZOPHRENIA, your nimble brain cells could not understand. See, positive schizophrenics think they are capable of anything..the SUPERMAN kind...That explains the balloon jump & walking straight into a speeding car.
3) A local drug peddler produces a knife and kamal says,"Endhu perisu.." (Mine is big)...? - Going by your crap level of "film understanding" you would have thought that this is a "double meaning" dialogue. Poor you. That scene is meant to accentuate the fact that he fully believes he is capable & endowed...
4) Why the cartoon scenes were unusaully lenghty? - BHARAT, u sure must have thought people forgot to edit the movie. Grow up baby critic. When PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENICS go into their hallucinatory trips, "TIME & SPACE" does not matter, rather does not exist, for them atleast. KAMAL has cleverly spun those cartoon scenes around this theme...
5) And why the narration switches over to cartoon when the scenes get bloody? - That was because he (NANDHU) feels it is OK to kill when he conjures up a cartoon ambience when he feels he might turn violent. If you had watched carefully (which you didn't..probably preoccupied with Raveena & Manisha), the doctor asks,"where did you learn so much violence?" and NANDHU replies,"..like from where all children learn...the cartoons."
6) And why he suddenly changes his mind in the climax? ..(The disorder of schizophrenia is such that people often find themselves loosing interest in what they vigourously pursue initially..and in more than 65% of the cases, there is suicidal tendency...(Hope it all falls in place now, dear "self proclaimed" critic)
7) and to top it all, this one is an absolute blinder...can u, dear Bharath, hazard a guess on why NANDHU takes an instant dislike for RAVEENA? - Hah never mind ...After reading through your silly postings, i don't expect you to figure out that...SCHIZOPHRENICS have an instant dislike for anything associated with media/broadcasting...because, these people think media people somehow PICK up the thoughts running in their mind and thus fear that once learning their thoughts , these media/broadcasting people would later try to persecute them...
Dear Acclaimed Critic Bharat, i hope u never see movies that are too much for your miniscule brain. (And did you understand head or tail out of KAMAL's previous mega-effort, HEY RAM...probably u didn't...For your kindest information, IOWA university has now added HEY RAM as a course material..)
:-)I only remember JESUS CHRIST's statement," Don't throw pearls before swines."...I guess KAMAL has given a pearl for the...well, forget it.. :-) [I have been strictly warned not to call names]

The following definition is for you, dear "SELF PROCLAIMED CRITIC" BHARAT annaachi....see if you can understand the meaning, and consequently, see if you can appreciate NANDHU character better.
------------------------------------------------
Paranoid Schizophrenia - This is the commonest type of schizophrenia in most parts of the world. The clinical picture is dominated by relatively stable, often paranoid, delusions, usually accompanied by hallucinations, particularly of the auditory variety, and perceptual disturbances.

neutral_fan,
