Ilaiyaraja and the bass guitar!
Dear All, Im a newbie to this wonderful site. Ive just been going through the old IR threads, especially 'Ilaiyaraja and the guitar' and the like. I was fascniated by the way ppl had discussed these topics (Mux, Kanchana and Kitcha ... hats Off!) I am absolutely bowled out by IRs use of the bass guitar in many many songs, like Ninnukori, POOgatru PudhirAnathu and so on. Im planning to learn the acoustic guitar and I thought Ilaiyaraja's love for the bass guitar shopuld be discussed more in detail. Please post ur comments!

A cute IR's bass is here:
Watch just at the beginning of the first interlude in Pani Vizhum Malar Vanam...it starts with a track of its own and joins immediately to the background of the interlude..and the rest of the song.

has anyone noticed the beautifullll bass backing in the song "O Butterfly" from Meera (the song is a visual treat too - thanks to PC Sriram!)?? Ilayaraja shows his class yet again in this song ... especially some 3mins into the song when SPB goes "arugul neeee..." the guitar just glides!

Hi ,
I have just started learning to notice the bass guitar parts of some of teh IR songs, can somebody tell me if what I am appreciating are indeed the bass guitar parts of the songs
1. "Varuvvaay anbe tharuvai " from Gharjanai song
2. 'devanin Kovil" from Aruvadai naal
3.' Chinna chinna vann kuyil" mouna raagam, my god the bass guitar ( if that is correct) is just fantastic with it's own rhythm, breath taking just too good,
please let me know if these songs indeed have bass guitar, ofcourse if others have not listened" Maalai choodum vezhai" from Naan Mahaan alla" has good bass guitar work

Yes, "Chinna Chinna Vannakkuyil.." has indeed an almost continuous bass track throughout the song. I wanted to write about something that excited me in this song for a long time..
Perhaps what excited me most was a spurt of bass-flute-violin' trio minuet at the beginning of first interlude, just before the beginning of the hum, that is totally unearthly..Mannn...how IR can come up with such ecstatic pieces..I didn't find such delights even in bits of Heinichen and Teleman the Baroque kings of horn, flute, oboe and strings..
In the trio I mentioned, the flute and violin sort of go in a fugue while the bass elevates them to a mystical musical marvel..This is where I think IR's creativity excels far beyond any music composer that I have heard. Many composers do put together well orchestrated continuous flow of delightful music but to come out grandly and forcefully in such minuets is clearly IR style..I have not heard such spurts in Bach (oh may be the minuet in Bach's Overture BWV 1067 is an exception to any composition) Vivaldi, etc. Perphas the one comes close to is Heinichen's piece in Dresden Concerti, Concerto G-Dur Siebel 213..try listen to this, IR's caliber will be evident...
I only wish that IR composed a full length piece on such trio or quartet arrangements with bass-flute-violin-guitar(isn't he a king in this?) with each of them being just playful and try to beat out in each other going up and down in scales..May be oboe will make it more cute..Add a piano..(well it may be too hard even for IR to compose one such with piano..it needs too many notes..except perhaps Mozart who he is the King of note inuendo..
IR has made such minuets in numerous songs..I will think of some and write about later..
Bye for now..

I guess, the "Vaanengum thanga " from Mudram pirai had a wonderfull bass guitar accompanying through out the song. One that is subtle but you can get it when you listen using a good head phone. Am i right? Happy New year to all

Chinna Chinna Vannakuyil has a seperate bass pattern.
The beauty of the song is that the bass pattern by itself is a tune if you listen to the Pallavi of the song.
There are uncountable of such numbers from IR from the 79- 80's. ( As i mentioned in this thread please hear to Thanga Changili from Thooral Ninnupochu)

Ilayaraja's nasal voice is disgusting to hear.
Only a downright "Nattan" will listen to that!
Ilaya Raja's days are over. Let him start a school to teach keyboards !

Here people are only talking about the beauty of the Instrument, which used in the song,
How its handled and how it's moving in whole song,
Not about VOICE.
