I got a 5 pack cassette from HMV recently from India. There are 74 songs in the pack and each song has a short introduction by MSV. TKR has a speech in the very beginning of cassette 1. MSV provides very nice insights into some of the songs.
I will try to post as many interesting intros as possible in this thread.

RV,
there is always a wrong notion held by many people that the most popular song in an album is always the best song. thats not so. Myself and Karthi are talking about better songs and not more popular songs. 'podhuvaaga en manasau thangam' might have been the more popular song as compared to endha poovilum vaasam undu from Murattu Kaalai but IMO the latter is much better to hear. But unfortunately its only the former that is featured in albums like Ilayaraja's claasics etc.

Every song has an intro by MSV. However, the recording quality is pretty poor - HMV has better quality versions in other albums it has released. MSV's voice is loud compared to the song's volume/loudness - even minimal equalizer controls haven't been used!
The songs have been selected by MSV himself - he mentions this a couple times (I've listened only to vol 1 & 2 so far). kaana vantha kaatchiyenna veLLi nilavE (instead of maalai pozhuthin mayakkaththilE), thendral varum and paattondru kEttEn (instead of other popular songs in paalum pazhamum or paasamalar).

SK: Every song has an intro by MSV. But the intro in several cases has nothing significant to the average TFMer. Still a must have for anybody who appreciates old songs as the intros are great in several cases.
Continuation of vol 1 songs again:
6. Ullasam Thedum Ellorum Or Naal Sollamal Povar Allavidam by Ghantasala in Thenaliraman. In the movie, Sivaji is disguised as a musalman and sings this song in the vicinity of Babar.
MSV seems to have great respect for Ghantasala and this song is presented as a representative song. Though the earlier Chandi Rani song also seems to be sung by Ghantasala. MSV says that Ghantasala was quite helpful even in song composition. Apparently Ghantasala became an MD later.
SK, long back I kept asking whether there is any movie in which MSV-TKR did not have one good song at least. You mentioned something called En Magan. Thenali raman must be a close second. This is the best song in a bad movie. It could be because the quality of the print was extremely bad.
7. This is a Nagiah song. MSV says that even though Nagiah himself was a famed MD, he did not have any hangups and co-operated greatly in singing this song to VR's directions. I didnt know that Nagaiah was an MD. I have heard that he is a good singer but this is the first song I have heard. Anybody know something abuot the musical career of Nagaiah?
8. MSV produced Pathi Bhakti along with Solaimalai, Bhimsingh and somebody else (GN Velumani?). He had asked 4 singers to record this song but chose the TMS version. He says that he wont divulge the names of others who recorded this song. (I am guessing seerkazhi, AMR and CSJ)Everybody chose the TMS version as that was the best voice fit.
9. Koovamal Koovum Gokilam: MSV mentions a well known incident. MSV was SMS Naidus shishya. SMS was having trouble coming up with a tune for a lyric (I dont remember the lyric.) MSV used to have the keys of the music room. He along with his friend and colleague GK Venkatesh (and somebody else he mentions) went to the music room and MSV came up with a tune. SMS stumbled into teh room accidentally and asked what was going on. MSV respectfully told him htat he had come up with a tune for thetroublesome lyric. SMS approved and appropriated the tune. When the song was recorded by TL and UR Jeevarathnam (who passed away recently) MSV was so thrilled. Later SMS himself told others that he had taken MSVs tunes. So when TL recorded this song, both MSV and TL feltthat this time the authorship of the tune need not be hidden.

RV: You left out the song referred to above - TL's first song 'puthu vasanthamaamE vaazhvilE' from abimanyu ('48; vasanam by MK) sung with UR Jeevaratnam. She passed away last week (see thirai.ambalam.com).
Nagaiah sang a duet w/ MS Subbulakshmi in Meera. However, even he seems to have had playback by the late 50s as in kalaivaanan (kalai saradha devi - Ghantasala & PBS).

10. Kasakkumaa illai inikkumaa - Paththini Deivam
MSV says "I knew Thanjai Ramaiah Dass from the days when I joined the troupe of TS Balaiah. Balaiah said taht he would make me an actor. But even then I used to play around the harmonium a lot. Patthini Dheivam was my third or 4th movie. Thanjai Ramaiah Dass didnt treat me as the chinnap paiyan he knew from days of old, he gave me the respect due to an MD and 'eppadi ellam valiandhu kodutthu ezhudha vendumo appai ellam valaindhu kodutthu ezhudhik kodutthar' Thats the reason for this song to be a hit."
11. Vinnoadum mugiloadum - Pudhayal
CSJ is a guru to me. He was my well wisher. I got married around this time and he did the kutcheri at my marriage. When he first heard this tune he said that this is "jeevan ulla paattu." This song will last forever and will always give pleasure to listeners as it is highly melodic.
12. Singaara punnagai - Mahaadevi
You could call us lullaby experts. Every lullaby we hv tuned has been a hit. I attribute this to our mothers. Mahadevi had MGR and dialogs by Kannadasan. This song has been such a hit that other MDs have used this tune.
The only one that I know of is "Singark Kanne Un Thenoorum sevvayal" in VPKattabomman. It is the same meter, same tune, sung a little faster. I prefer the VPK version by GR, though the VR version is earlier.
13. Thendral urangiya poathum - Petra Magalai Vitra Annai
This song always evokes a sad memory. As they got out of the recording theater, they heard that NSK is dead. MSV, TKR, Maruthakasi then rushed from salem in a car to madras. NSK was an inspiration to every artist then and he was a well wisher of all artists.
This is one of the dozen songs that I always paused to listen whenever it came from a tea shop and makes me feel good every time I hear it.
14. Senthamizh thein - Maalaiyitta Mangai
Kannadasan felt vexed that his creative tendencies were not given full rein by the producers. He decided to produce a movie and told MSV that his movie will have 10 songs; all songs will be written first and then the MD will have to provide a tune. If MSV is not upto it, then Kannadasan will find another MD.
MSV describes TRM's voice as a unique tamil voice. TRM, according to MSV, is part of a tradition starting from SG Kittappa, MKT, PUC and going on to CSJ, TMS, Seerkazhi.
The songs were a big hit and was appereciated by GR himself. GR said that using the high pitch voice of TRM for a low pitch song (now, which song was that?) was novel and he really liked it.
Ironically, this tune is copied from a Hindi movie!
15. Aadai katti vandha nilavoa - Amudha Valli
Another one by TRM. Pattukkottai was the lyricist. PK wrote the lyric to the tune. MSV says "PK took some time to write this. Sandatthukku ezhudha PK konjam kashatap paduvar. Sondatthukku ezhudhuvadhu kai vandha kalai!"
16. Thulli thulli - Thalai Koduththaan Thambi
I didnt like particularly like this song. A representative song from AMR. MSV was the first to voice test AMR and he felt that given the right type of song, AMR will shine. He remarks that amr's voice is very sweet.

Thanks for sharing these info here. Details of
the 'senthamizh thEn mozhiyAL' tune lift..

'singAra punnagai' pallavi was rehashed by IR
in 'rAsAththi unnai kANAma nenjam'.
About VR's lullabies..
'mazhai kooda oru nALil thEnAgalAm' is
a wonderful thAlAttu sung by MSR. (movie: mAlaiyitta mangai). Have you listened to 'chinnanjiru kaN
malar, chempavaLa vAy malar, konjidum azhagE
vArAyO' from 'pathi bhakthi'? 'En piRandhAi maganE'
and 'malarndhum malarAdha' are other greats!
Have you listened to this PBS's lullaby in
VR's 'sugam engE' which goes as.. 'azhagAna malarE,
aRivAna poruLE, theLivAna theLivE'? Another
great lullaby is 'aththaimadi meththaiyadi'.
I think VR have given a series of sweet lullabies!
About the 'Adai katti vandha nilavO' song I have
read a different (looks inconsistent with what
MSV says) story. This is said in Dr. Shanmugasundaram's
book titled 'vairamuththu varai'..
PattukkOttai, thanadhu aNNanOdu peN pArkkap pOnAr.
AththikkOttaikku thirumbi vandhadhum peNNaip patri
aNNan kEttAr. udanE pattukkOttai oru thALai eduththu,

sk and rv, a few years back MSV wrote an article in Anandha vikatan and in that I felt he had given some info which was just plain contracdictory to the truth! An example was that he said KaNNadhaasan wrote a song for the real life situation when MSV and TKR separated and that, that song was "Ninakkath Therindha ManamE". How come? They separated in 1965 and this song was released around 1960-61 (Ananda JOthi). So, I feel that what Dr.Shanmugasundaram says may be correct!
But, there is a hitch: If you see the song 'Adai Katti Vandha NilavO', I also feel what MSV says may be true because the lines 1,2 and 5,6 are consistent while the 3rd and 4th are shorter in their sandham which I doubt can happen if the song was written first! May be they added those 2 lines later to a (supposedly) pre-written song in order to fit the tune, in which case both are right!

Karthi:
Regarding ninaikkath therindha manamE..
Anandha jOthi was released in 1963. I was told by
a friend that the seed for the VR break-off
(which finally happened in 1965)
was initiated in 1963. So it is quite
possible that TKR had suggested a break in the
partnership to MSV in 1963 itself.
