This is an attempt to have your views on the diversity of IRs compositions. If we can discuss, in sets of two, contrasting creations of IR, and share with others what appeals to us about those particular tunes, and why we think they are good examples of his melodic flexibility.
The stress should be Separate but Brilliant.
Two sets, and your views.
It will help us all to rediscovers these songs again, and look at them from your "expert" point of view! :-)

Just logged on and found your post.
Alliththandha Bhoomi, IMO, is one of MVDs best solos (alongside Vaa Vaa Vasanthame, Oru Thangaradhaththil, Ezhudhugiral Oru Pudhukkavidhai, Adi Aadu Poongodiye...) It is also one of the lesser known (and even less played) songs. I was adamant about including it in the compilation!
Thanks for staying up (was it past midnight where you are??) and staying tuned. If 5 have listened from here and have said so, I am sure many more would have, and that's the whole point: Good music for Discerning ears!

Of course, belated congratulations on the much deserving success of this wonderful program. But how come, after doing 12 years of service to that radio station, you don't get to dictate terms (so to say!) regarding whether or not you could have another session of this IR compilation? You should twist arms if needed.
But, as always, it was thoroughly enjoyable. So many tamil songs of IR that I didn't know and should have known but know them now!
See if you can have a show for Deepavali - that will be a good way to celebrate. Enough of the alkas, shreyas, sanus and udits (that phrase you repeated 3 times or so for this Anup's audience was quite funny), we want Janakis, Vanis, Balus and Dasettans here.

Raj and others,
Is it possible to get a copy of recording of this show?
Thanks.

Naaz, Raj, Raghu and other IR devotees (for want of a more apt term),
I have thus far been a passive participant in newtfmpage (largely owing to the "m" in tfm pretty well ceasing to be so in recent years), but your committed efforts to popularise IR's divine work have compelled me to break my silence.
As the number of posts shows, my kudos, being one among a whole host, will not be a major morale-booster or anything of the sort, but the sheer dedication of you guys impels me to include my praise, congratulations and best wishes.
It is heartening to see that there are scores of people still around with the aesthetic refinement required to savour the finesse and sheer blissfulness of marvels like uravenum pudhiya, paruvame, metti oli, en iniya pon, idhu oru pon maalai,......ad infinitum....
Hats off to you guys for the service you are doing to lovers of music of whatever earthly classification. All my wishes and prayers for you to carry on....

Kaumudi -
Here's the truth: I enjoy presenting a tamizh music show (classical, devotional, film) than a hindi one.
There are many reasons for this preference, but the two salient ones are: local tamizh population (which has grown exponentially in the last 5-7yrs)in this city, is a lot more responsive and eager to listen to songs in their language. THEY CALL and say so during the programme (whereas the hindi audience has become rather complacent and smug - that whole ghar ki murghi dal barabar shtick. 10 years of regular hindi programmes has only served to fatten fingers that can't push telephone buttons :-).
The second, and more important reason is that there is not a single radio station in this town that caters to the tamizh communities. There are 24 hr Hindi, Gurbani/Bhajan, Punjabi/Bhangara radios which NEVER touch the regional languages. Hence, a tamizh programme is both rare and necessary. (Yesterday, out of the 7 local calls, two were from the Hindi crowd wondering why I was playing strange "southie" music!! Hence my repeated ASUS rubs, and you counted the times!)
I don't about anybody else - but I thoroughly enjoyed the last two Sundays. The response from these parts has also been wonderful, and that always makes for a better show - in thought and quality. And, no, the station does not dictate any terms (expect that the presentation be in English)on programme content (RhythmsIndia, even with hindi chartbusting stuff, is till the one of the two most listened to programmes on citr - for nearly a decade!) and the choice of music / genre is entirely mine (and the other DJ's.)
Another IR compilation, so soon after to mindblowing shows, might be too much of a good thing. I'd be happy to think on the lines of another show, but Deepavali might be cutting it a bit close. How about a Pongal show - featuring film music - but by all MDs over time ('70s-2000 - 3 decades) - with a four song segment per composer? That would be diverse and representative, yeah?
Share any other ideas you may have, and we'll work out something - 3 months is good lead time! :-)
Thanks for tuning and sharing!

There are few typos in the above, Kaumudi. But you will get the right words (in spelling) and overlook, yeah? :-)

Naaz: I listened to a few of the songs and I liked them. I don't know much about IR. I left India long before he appeared on the cinema music scene. I heard about him for the first time when he composed for RPO. A suggestion to get more leverage with the station : You could have asked the listeners to support the station with a contribution. It is done by the stations run by universities in US. They have an annual fund raising week when volunteers attend the phones to take pledges. I don't know the Tamil population in BC. Let us say it is about 20000, about a tenth of the Tamil population in Canada. If, on the average, each contributes $10, you collect $200000, a lot for a public radio station supported and funded by UBC. Then, you might get to dictate terms Kaumudi wants! Will the Tamil community come forward? You know better than me.
Cheers! Keep up the good work!

True. But you left out "Kodai kaala katre". Thats a absolute mesmerizing song. MVD is wonderfull on that song.

Raj and others,
Is it possible to get a copy of recording of this show?
Yep! I have recorded the program. Let me know the best way to upload it. Its 20 mb for the rm file. I converted it to mp3 and it sounded great. Naaz! you have a soothing voice. Thats one more compliment from me, other than the fabulously compered show.
Naaz, the idea of putting together another show would also be great. (4 songs per composers!). IR, ARR, MSV wow!! That would be a treat.

Osho - (not the one from Oregon :-)
Yes, Kodaikkaala Kaatre is soft breeze of a song. A good companion for this would be, Thedinaen Pudhiya Sugam Serndhadhu (?) from Shankarlal. The latter did not get much air-time. The former was a bonafide hit (with repeated radio play.)
Now, I am both curious and hesitant about listening to the recorded show :-) Could you send me your email address, Osho? I'll give you instructions (thru email) where to send me the MP3 show file. Many thanks.
Did you notice that the show had "juxtaposed" two "Anandam" bookends - opening song and closing song. This idea was suggested by another poster from newtfmpage. It was a fantastic suggestion of contrasts - the one emotion of LOVE - expressed with vaulting joy in the first, and mature contentment in the last.
I hope DFers would discuss similar "contrasts" in sets of two. IRs compositions capture many such moods - yet, with a subtle difference every time.

That was nice thing to say! You must say more such nice (and not nice) things. God knows, there are many opinions here, but are they thoughtful? We could all use a bit more of the latter :-)
Do throw in your two bits whenever you feel up to it!

Your suggestion is worth exploring. I've made a note of it, and will discuss the idea at the next station AGM. Let's see what the programme director/station director have to say. Thanks for the thought!

Palantir, Naaz, Osho:
Could one (or more) of you guys have the session uploaded such that it is accessible to people like me who missed it and are extremely excited about listening to a recording?
Thanks,
