This is no copy...just clarifying my doubt.
The song 'Celestial soda pop' by Ray Lynch sounds very much like an old IR song. Now I know the this song by tune, but just dunno its lyrics. I think (think! not sure) I've heard this song in the Maniratnam directed Kannada movie, 'Pallavi anu pallavi' (starring Lakshmi and Anil Kapoor) as also a tamil version.
Ray Lynch's song was released in 1984 while Pallavi anu pallavi came out in 1983...but I'm not even sure where this song featured in tamil/ kannada. But its a vintage IR song, very beautiful.
Can somebody listen to Ray Lynch's song and identify the IR song - that would also show if indeed there are traces of one on the other!
You could listen to the Ray Lynch song here...

Song: Celestial soda pop

Karthik: Not close even. You are talking of Naguva Nayana Madhura Mauna (SPB & SJ). Not possible for someone else other than IR to come up with a perfect tune like that. It took me three hearings to guess the familiarity you had of which song. I have the CD with me!
Karthik: can you just check on this one - i thought of opening a serious thread, but not much good sport here. so asking you in this itself: did you find any similarity between Yennadi Meenakshi of IR and Beat It song of MJ. (It is so close that I can eddie van halen's guitar solo was a full scale version of IR's own work in Yennaid Meenakshi. Just listen to each of the songs pallavi for pallavi!!!!

Is there a tamil version to the song you mentioned? And is that song from Pallavi anu pallavi?
I sure would like to listen to that tamil tune to confirm I'm talkin about the same song :-)

Got it from my friend Prasanna. I was talking about the song 'mella mella' from Vaazhkai. Release year 1984 - same year as Ray Lynch's 'celestial soda pop'!
Does anybody else see the similarity?

Karthik, I find little similiarity between "mella mella" and this song..you can include it under coincidence maybe..but you might want to check the following hit number http://www.geocities.com/blinky7004/70/19BTExpressDoit.zip its an mp3 file. I heard this number incidentally in a restaurant and searched for it..this version is not the one I wanted, but its good enough for a start..listen to the trumpet piece between 2:38 and 2:55 in the song and also the lines "till youre satisfied" which gets repeated in the song..its a possible inspiration for "ennadi meenakshi"..this english number came out in 1974 and was a chart topper supposedly and could have been an inspiration for the tamil song also you can include the "amma dekh" song in your list that I mentioned earlier in this thread

suresh,
thanks for ur i/p but i apologize..the ending wors are not "chum chum chum" which is why i misled u.. but it end with.. "tha na Na ..Tha th the na Na"
I know my written representation of tune is very "open to interpretation" but try stressing the syllabeles starting with capital letter..

Karthik S,
I know what song u r talking about...but i too don't remember the lyrics:-) It had beautiful solo violin piece (IR tm) and the female voice repeats that tune (with clapping of hands!). The same 1 or 2 lines are repeated...very melodious and relaxing...and towards the end of the song it picks up pace. My understanding was that it was probably picturised on Silk Smitha (i may be wrong!). But it is certainly not from Pallavi Anu Pallavi (MR-IR) or Idhaya Thaamarai (by SG).
ayyo...i used to hear it about 20 yrs back when my neighbour would play its gramaphone record. ayya! yaaraavudhu link pleeeazzz...(thou i doubt if it is on the net:-()

C'mon I posted the details of this song, check out on the top of this page....but anyway stop guessing and listen to the songs! Have added both 'mella mella' from Vaazhkai and Celestial soda pop to my page...

Incidentally, everybody I asked didnt know the lyrics of the Vaazhkai song. Every body knew the tune by heart! Then I called up a few friends and hummed it over to them...then one of the got it! Its rather strange that all of them (and me) remembered a lot of that song in terms of the tune...almost the whole song, but didnt know a single word!!!!

Vijay, I downloaded that number. I hrd that part too from 2:38...but I couldnt find any traces of ennadi meenakshi in it...the trumpet was there right, but tunewise no similariy IMO.

Karthik, you should listen carefully not to the lead track but the other one also, the notes of "ennadi meenakshi" is there around 2: 44 and also earlier in the song and towards the end..also like I said this was not exactly the version that I sought after, I will try to see if I can get a better one..but as for "amma dekh" no doubts at all :-)

Karthik, there is similarity and could be an inspired tune (who to whom? at that time, new age was totally not known in India plus IR was at superspeed with 40 50 films, no way IR got inspired, on that other hand this song acctually had only a pallavi and quite different, so we don't know!!!) but I tthink celestial pop has got a nice edge, soft sounds and it is consummatte. IR's that number was okay. i remember thatt song, but Kaalam Maralam was a super song that overshadowed the other numbers of the movie.
On the other hand, that new age sound was not that 84ish, could've been late 80s!!!
Great work, though.

I've anyway written to the website owners of www.raylynch.com to get some more info on month of release etc. Ray Lynch's music wasnt commercially sold initially and was given
extensive airplay in radio...wonder if it reached Indian air waves! His songs had garnered tremendous word of mouth publicity and sold primarily via that!
When did Vaazhkai release in 1984? I mean which month? Considering IR was on his peak at that time with about 40-50 movies every year, its possible that he could've heard it on the radio and got influenced by it....IMO only, no proof of course!
But since both the years have been established as 1984, I feel the benefit of doubt MUST go to IR and deem it as a case of coincidence as of now. Innocent until proven otherwise. Considering IR's proficiency I'd rate IR equally adept and talented to come with a tune like that - inspite of 50 movies per year.

Just wanted to add...Ray Lynch's music could at best be classified in the synth genre and not much in new age. Synth as in Jean Micheal Jarre and so on!

Great find!! If indeed "celestial Soda pop" was released first than I would classify this a "lift" not as inspiration :-).
how did you happen to find this?

I don't know , if I am 100% right, well any way
if the song in discussion from Vaazhkai is "Mella Mella" the song goes like this "Mella mella ennai thottu......manmadha un velaiyai kaattu oh...nee kaattu " some thing like that, this is original tamil song, it never had a kannada version, although it is one of those famous IR stints, which he used to do, composing song tunes based on the BGM which were too impressive to himself ( I guess), the original BGm as mentioned by others appears althro' out in the MR's first film "pallavi anu Pallavi", starting from the Madikeri ( Mercara) scenes, one of the great BGM pieces to date, with the breath taking photography accompanied by none other than Balu Mahendra. The Kannada version was released somewhere in mid 1983, ran for 100 days with much difficulty in Triveni (Bangalore), the tamil version, was released in june - july 1984. Ray Lynch's Celestial soda Pop ( from Deep Break Fast) was released in 1984, ranked seven in top 50 of the smooth jazz hits between 1976-1999, see the link below,
http://www.smoothjazz1059.com/viewentry.asp?ID=25115&PT=community2
Personally I didn't feel great resemblence between the Ir and RL songs, however, it did ring a bell the first time when I first listened to Celestial soda pop song as if the tune was very familiar tamil tune.
Anyway for those interested in Smooth jazz instrumental songs, the same site's weekly playlist for the Week of March 4th, 2002, has some great songs, they are very addictive indeed, try "Kim Waters" Until Dawn

I listened to the song too and here is my share. IMO, it is not even an inspiration. There are so many songs with the same rock-shuffle rhythm and one I can think immly is "devi koondhalo brindhaavanam" (the original of which is a foreign number) and any banal minor chord progression would sound pretty much the same in that rhythm.
Seems like we are getting a bit too inquisitive here and chasing heavily. At this rate we may end up saying "hey IR has used the same C minor which pichchai eduththovsky did". konjam vittu pidingappa :-)
Srikanth has done a similar number in this line - a folkal rendezvous - and may be able to explain it further.
