How abt compiling the greatest threads in newtfmpage DF til now?Let us all select their favourite 5 threads in newtfmpage DF(from all the threads till now). This would serve to the new comers in newtfmpage in a better way so that they dont waste time in searching in the archives. If possible classify the threads like "most humorous","most flamest","most touching","most argumental" etc etc..We can post some greatest posts by newtfmpage DFers..just paste the posts alone..not the threads..and please dont be biased in selecting..:-))

Made everyone know what a folk lore is!!Made us smell the greens of the rustic hamlets through his songs!! Made symphony a home word, Made every tamilan hold the head high!!Success in the realms of spirituality, Success in the homefront in giving the TFM future talents, etc., etc.,
If there could be someone who could inspire me with more accomplishments than what he had set out for, in his life - music, then it is ILAYARAAJA.
Many have trod in the torn path - but only
His are those indelible marks!!!
Here is a man's story, more than the rag(a)s to riches kind!! His musical genius need not be measured in terms of the innumerable numbers he has given!! But may it be measured in terms of peace he has gotten in his life, and given to the rest of the mankind!!
I end with a quote::
"The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist"
Ilayaraaja (has) lived.

peeps, thanks a lot for starting this thread. I read the whole of "Psychology of transition" in one sitting, it was so interesting. Request you to continue the good work. I also request other old-timers to point newbies like me to interesting threads in the past. I spend quite some time in the archives but I only manage to dig up more duds than the goodies :)

I remember reading the IR or ARR thread started by some Anand. He said something like IR not doing justice to carnatic ragas in his songs. He was thoroughly mauled by everyone including the experts. He didn't make a single post after starting the thread. thunda kaanom thuniya kaanom-nu odittaan.

It was a dull evening after 2 tough days of unsuccessful debugging. I was on my way back to home. I was mentally dumb due to the frustrating work and I was playing my own IR hits collection in walkman! Though it had Freq. equalizers & Mega Bass etc, I never tuned them properly and I always use them to get maximum volume out of it. But this particular time I had to tune them down as my walkman was running low on battery and I know that tuning off many features gives me more playing time.
At that time, the song 'dhEvanin kovil moodiya nEram' just started and I felt tht the song is reflecting my mood. And, the first interlude was about to start and I just pushed the trebile down.
Oh my goodness. Where was this bass guitar hiding before? When did it join the flute? A marvellous transition with the church bell and with the fast progressing beats, I felt a fresh suppy of blood flooding my brains! It simply took away my senses and changed my mood entirely! And this song touched me/my soul/my feeling somehow!
Lovely lyrics and nice pace! In the second interlude that 'thandhana thandhana thana..'...Its very lively! Chitra's soul-full voice! Lovely orchestration! And it made me to realize the fact why IR fan finds it difficult to enjoy others music!
A guitarist finds his favorite string section!
A flutist finds his favorite haunting melody!
A violin lover enjoys many layers of his favorite!
And still there are more: chords, KB, rythm, pace, soul, melody and important fact is its all mixed very well in a enjoybale way!

A attempted comparison of IR & ARR by bb..:-)
From: bb - a pseudonym, but not a psycho(hopefully):) (@ bernstein.crhc.uiuc.edu) on: Fri May 14 18:00:50 EDT 1999
some thoughts:
the songs that MS mentions are songs that i think germinate from a small idea and are left in the incubator. one thing i like about ARR is that in such songs, he doesn't bring any unwanted fluff/jazzy stuffinto it. as a result, in the middle of the song, when he introduces percussion, it is so gratifying and stands out. a good example will be the usage of tabla in "ini achcham achcham illai".
a good thing about these songs is his good selection of singers. i am amazed at the difference in quality of the chorus singers of IR and ARR. IR's chorus singers sound like people who want to spoil the mood of the song:)
another commonality that can be attributed to the song is its slow ascend and descend of swaras. though i am not an expert in this, i think that the progression of swarams in aarohanam/avarohanam are very slow in these songs. sometimes, i feel as though ARR has done some of his songs in as few notes as possible. this is also in stark contrast to IR's broad usage of octaves. even a song with a recurring swaram(loop?starting point?..can't get a better word) like "inji iduppazhagi" goes easily and fast into higher octaves.
also, it will be an interesting exercise to find out the common raagams that ARR uses for these songs. i am sure they will be related or will be mostly janyams/one bit flips of each other or so.
another thing i like is his usage of mirudhangam. brings a majesty to the song, fits in with the mood easily than the thabla. IR's forays into using mirudhangam are limited, due to his unparalled experimentations with tabla, mELam etc.
the basic diff is in their approach to a sad song. several of the songs that MS has listed are melancholies, and IR and ARR differ widely in this. IR uses instruments to bring in the mood ( the shehnai, trumpet, the sad flute), whereas ARR avoids them as much as possible. one can see an evolution (deliberate?) in ARR's approach. his "ennaaththaa ponnaaththaa" is very IRish, with its high pitched instruments bringing the sadness to the song. later, he refined more. the beat structure was also taken off the percussion mostly. a song by IR which comes closest to ARR's style of functioning is "solai pasunkiLiyE". i guess it can be easily converted to a typical ARR song.
MS, pOdhumaa IR, ARR comparison:)))
