Transition is fate and the order of the day. But golden tunes of G Ramanathan, Subbaraman, MSV TKR, KVM and golden voices like Sirkali Govindarajan, TMS, PB Srinivas, AM Raja are beyond time scales and stand the test of time. They enchant all generations alike. All other music on the way after that is 'on transit'

I used to be a frequent visitor of TFM page in the days gone by and I wrote about my experiences in the first page of this thread. Just to spare the trouble of going back and referring to these postings, I will summarize it here.
I was a hard-core IR fan in the early eighties who transitioned into a hardcore MSV-TKR/GR fan later. I still prefer songs from 50s and 60s, but I think IR is a genius.
The transition I would like to talk about now is about Deva. I hated Deva. Very bad songs, mostly copied. But I have to acknowledge that he has made the "gana" form come alive for me. I was out of TN by the time gana became popular. Sevaral of his gana songs - especially "Ootthikinu Kadicchukkalam" are really great! From an opinion of "Deva sucks big time" I have transitioned into "Has a genius for gana songs and can produce decent songs (Nerukku Ner, for e.g.) if he tries."

deva merely popularised the gaana. it was not his creation, nor are many of his gaana songs. in fact, oothikkinu kadichchukalaam is a direct lift of a 50s song that goes "aaduvome paaduvome".
i agree with you in that he can produce original melodious numbers too, if the director is insistent.

cram: Aaduvome Paduvome? Never heard this song. Any details?
And of course, Deva didnt invent Gana. I remember a movie called Thalai vasal in which I first heard Gana and another song called "Vetthilai Potta Shokkile". He has "merely" taken an existing genre of music and popularized it. I wouldnt underrate that, though. AR Rahman uses the "savu molam" a lot; GR used Carnatic music a lot. I dont beleive using an existing genre of music lessens a music director's acheivement in any sense.

As far as my memory goes, it was Balabharathy who formally launched the gana genre in TFM with Thalai Vaasal, which had lots of small gana pieces interspersed all through the movie. When Aadityan used a techno gana like 'vethala potta' some chennai gana singer claimed Aadityan had copied his original composition.
Gana still remains a wierd phenomenon in Tamilnadu. While in hindi gana means just a song, its a genre in tamil!
And 'aaduvime pallu paaduvome, aanantha suthamthiram adainthuvittome' doesnt seem to have any resemblance to 'oothikinu kadichukalaam'. This song from Ninaivirukkum Varai was indeed very catchy, good one by deva! Deva's transition to top class makers like Vasanth resulted in aasai and nerukku ner. Aasai was defnitely a result of lot of hard work and a lot of spanking by Vasanth. Given a good director I think Deva can deliver the goods very well.
Surprisingly, I consider the song 'ee manase' from the telugu movie 'Tholi Prema' (dubbed in tamil as 'Aanantha Mazhai') as Deva's best IMO. Fantastic number, very unDeva-like. But hats off to him! I wonder why he reserved it for a telugu movie!
Incidentally the picturisation of this song has terribly inspired Sundar C for his Ullam Kollai Poguthey number 'en kaadhali pokindral'. Even the tune is sort of similar!

the "aaduvome paaduvome" song that i have referred to is not the one you have mentioned.
