I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan -
After a hard slog of a day, I log on and find a song that chases every quotidian misgiving away!
I had not heard the song before and heard it for the first time a few minutes ago...What can I say? A Singer's Composer and a Composer's Singer - That's the only way I can sum up the VJ-MSV collaborations.
The composition has an internal rhythmic lilt (felt through out) and the singer has to deliver within that tempo. VJ paces the song admirably.
Sivandha Kannam Paaloravum....Mayangi Unnum Naal Vandhadhu...Iravu Muzhudhum Sorgangale
The quiet bashfulness and joy in the tone (particularly in this stanza) is moving.
Oliyin Maenmai Deepaththile
Deepa Maenmai Deivaththile
Deiva Maenmai Kovilile
Kovil Maenmai Kudumbaththile
Short-hand Andhadhi - and how profound! Not surprisingly, VJ mines the repetition with acumen.
I know I will listen to this song again, and that it will make VJs best solos (my compilation) list without a moment hesitation.
Rapture is the word, Saravanan. All around from composer to singer; from singer to song.
(BTW: Did my "gloss" reading of Aathoram Kodi Veedu manage (at least) a B+ in your interpretational grading scale? :-) Tell it like it is!

For my files: Could you enlighten us about the film and other details re: Vaanile Endha Naalum? Thanks.

Kaumudi, that was an interesting observation about 'High on a hill', this never struck me!
Naaz, Aathoram kodi veedu gets an A+, and so does your 'reading' :)
And 'vaanile endha naalum ananda sooryodhayam' is from the film 'Anu' ( was it released?) I have seen it on SCV channel, though. Jayadevi is the heroine. Story is that of a rich girl falling in love with a poor guy--marries him--he dies suddenly-- she works hard to uplift her husband's family--end.
But a wonderful song! ( 'Indha paattu endha padam?' asked a surprised VJ!! But as astute as ever, she said 'Tune sounds like MSV's?':)
Another excellent song in the film is a SPB-VJ duet- 'Sandhana kaatttil malligai pooththathu mangala vaasangal'

Saravanan,
Thanks for the lovely song "vAnilE endha nALum". I have not heard this song before either. How beautifully the lyricist and the singer capture the hopes, contentment and happiness of a wife! The composer expresses the moods without overdoing it. He lets the voice and the words do the magic. A song where the artistry and the genius of the singer, composer and the lyricist are brought out in an unassuming, but sharp and elegant manner.
Priya,
You found the new addition! Thanks for the movie title. Expect more rare combinations under MoreTamil section. I reorganized those pages, kind of, to make it easy to look up the songs.

I thought "anu" meant small or little, even short perhaps. 'Guess "abrupt" is optional but included :-) I vaguely recall the film, particularly the duet you mention.
The lyricist deserves a special place. The lyrics are felt and and as Neel D says, captures "contentment" throughout. Domestic Bliss pervades - perhaps that is the "internal rhythm" I mentioned earlier. It flows without a false not (once again, MSV uses the chorus without overwhelming the composition.)
Here's one for your "finditnow" list:
When you mentioned Jayadevi, a song in a film directed by her came to mind, and along with it a VJ (?) duet. Music is by Shyam, and the film is Vaa Indha Pakkam:
Ival Devadhai
Idhazh Madhulai
Nila Medaiyil Kanaa Nadagam
Kanaakkal Illai
Kaanbadhunmaiye
And VJ charges into the song as the song takes a rustic and folkish turn:
Pulivaalu Meesa Vachcha Aalu
Pallakku Pole Rendu Tholu
(That's where my loop stops. Anubruptly :-)
I only know that you and Neel D can send your team out to lasso this "rapture." (you have to love the word!!) I can only wish them luck :-)

Nagesh, sure I will. Can you send me a mail?
Naaz, Its a SPB-VJ duet. I have the song somewhere- will look for it.
And my team comprises of only one member- yours truly :)
Neel, 'Vaanile' is a song that has everything a film song ought to have, and more. Your appreciation says it all. Thanks.

Neel, was looking at 'More Tamil'- noticed 'Manjal veyyil sevvanathil' just now. Its from the film Shankari. And the male voice is Rajkumar Bharathi, not Jolly Abraham. Music by V.Kumar.

Neel D-
Is Mazhaiye En Meedhu available at the website? I look high and low and could not locate it in the 5 pages of More Tamil...Could you please confirm location, etc? Thanks.
Priya-
I'm glad you recall the song from Vaa Indha Pakkam. It was another unusual duet by VJ-SPB. Do you know if VJ had songs in the other Mouli films - namely -
Ivargal Viththiyasamanavargal, Mattravai Naeril, Oru Pullankuzhal Aduppu Oodhugiradhu?

Saravanan,
Thanks for the info. Isn't "manjaL veyyil" a lovely duet? V.Kumar in the 80s and he fits perfectly. I think I have seen the movie Shankari. Or may be I saw Vasanthi. Not sure. Had Madhuri in it. May be Baby Shalini too.
Priyamvatha,
If you visit vanijairam.com and click on SongsIndex you will find many songs and the corresponding movie titles. If you need a lot more interesting information you should read the Chronology section written be Saravanan.

dear mr saravanan,
do you the following two songs of VJ?
'Oru Paarvai Podhum Enai Vella-k-koodum' with PBS from Vadai Maalai (only PBS-VJ song in Tamil?)
'Amman Alangaaram' with SPB from Oru Vaasiru
Uruvaagiradhu (both Valee and MSV) (1982)

Neel, Shankari starred Thyagarajan & Sarita. Vasanthi had Mohan, Madhuri and Devilalitha(?).
Mr.Nagarajan, I have 'Oru paarvai podhum' only on tape :( But I think I have 'Amman alangaram' on CD, I'll send it to you soon.

Saravanan: Apparently, yesterday;s "Then Kinnnam"
prog. in Jaya TV. was presented by VJ. Among other things, she is supposed to have commented on the music of "Karnan", her experience in Apoorva Raagangal and about various music directors (GR, KVM etc.). It looks like she did not play too many of her own songs, "vasanta Kaala" from Moonru Mudicchu being a notable exception. I did not watch the programme but I wonder if anyone who was fortunate enough to do so could provide more details.

RR, Thanks for the information. Hope someone who saw the programme can share the details with us.
Seeing that its on Jaya TV, and considering whose b'day it is today, perhaps 'Sippiyile muthu'/ 'Mazhaikkalam varugindrathu'/ 'Engirundho oru kural vandhadhu' found mention? :)

Saravanan,
It is strange that you mentioned "tharavA" out of all those new additions. In the past two weeks I must have listened to that song about a hundred times. A song very much like "antha nEram poRuththirunthAl".
A whispery, dreamy, romantic, sexy yet decent song. The pallavi opens with ordinary lines but the charanams are beautifully written. An amazing talent (among many others) that Vani has is to whisper a song but never breathe heavily between words (like some people do) and never compromise on clarity and sharpness.
The interlude between the charanams is outstanding. The "siNunggal" of pleasure at first, followed by the sinunggal trying to get away from her man. It is not just Vani expressing, it is Vani enacting. Also listen to the composer's creativity. The kisses and sinunggals followed by the dark and mysterious music to depict romance. And then the chorus and the joyful music expressing a feeling of lightness and pleasure. The whole song is a great work of art. I wish I had a better recording of it.
