I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Neel/ Naaz- you're welcome! Though MBK has the lion's share in the song, VK sparkles with vivacity in her lines! Naaz, will restart the chronology soon.
Just remembered another VJ- Raj Seetharaman duet:
'Unnai kande ullam thithithene' from Perumai. Music: S-G.

Neel D / Saravanan et al
Margazhi Pookkale Ilanthendrale Kaarmegame...
For some odd reason this song did not get the attention it deserved, and I feel (on a listening after many years today) that it is a superior composition (creatively speaking) to Illam Sangeetham (which was the populist pick from the film.) I also found TL Maharajan's voice to be refreshingly youthful and a perfect foil for the assured authority of VJ.
VJ begins with a soft and strong (yep, she can do this in just one line!) vault and TLM follows with aqual assurance in "Aadum Ponoonjal Thedamal Vandhal...." TLMs lingering on Margazhi immediately thereafter is tender with romance.
The song suddenly races with "Pillai Vadivaga Oru Thoodhan Vandhaan...." VJ doesn't let go, pacing with excitement in the lines "Maavilai Thoranam Aedhumilladhoru Manjam Amaindhadhu Idhamaga..." She bristles with "connsumate" anticipation in the words "Sugamo Sugam" in both instances when this phrase recurs. The song is simple, enchanting and performed with grace by both the artistes. Illam Sangeetham has moved to third place in my ranking already (I still believe that Aathoram Kodi Veedu was the stellar composition in the film, and still holds its premier place :-)
It is a telling (and sad)fact that TLM did not survive the TFM rat-race. Merit has never really been the only qualification for success in film singing. TLM is one more case study that proves this to be true.Did VJ-TLM have other duets together - MSV or SG?

Sorry-pa. I thought the film was obvious, although invisible :-) Avan Avan Adhu (based upon the novel Oru Singam Muyalagiradhu by Sivasankari) was a sort-of "comeback" film for Lakshmi (not that she really been away...) After which came (I think) Polladhavan, Thandikkappatta Nyayagnal, Sirai, (the insufferable) Thavam, Oru Malarin Payanam etc.
Have you seen AAA (a triple A without the certificate :-)? All the three songs I've mentioned are available for a listen at the VJ website.
* Natchaththira Uruvame - yes, Illam Sangeetham Adhil Raagam Samasaram is by VJ-SPB (a good song, but not half close to Gowri Manohariyai Kandaen:-)

Naaz, the only other TLM-VJ duet that comes to mind is 'Adipadavum idipadavum' from the unreleased film Theneer. Music-GA and Lyrics by Thanigai Selvan.
And yes, Maargazhi pookale is a lovely song, with MSV's creative skills in full bloom, the music just after 'idam thedinen-- kaangiren--' ushers in the joy of beholding the beloved-- and TLM & VJ bring in the ecstasy so well -aadum ponoonjal thedaamal vandhaal aasai palakkodi sugamo sugam- koodum kaaveri nadhi vandha neram, kodi ennangal manamo manam, mangala kai valai pongi ezhundhida kinkini thandaigal kavi paada, sengani mandhira mangai nadanthanal kannanidam suga uravaada--sugamo sugamo--manamo manam-- Kannadasan, of course!
(Sripriya, the surrogate wife's dream of romancing with Sivakumar)
Surya- Maya Arts, and 1980 ;)
BTW, Sun TV is telecasting 'Navagraha Nayaki' as Sivaraathiri special :)

It is an interesting observation (might make a lengthy and informed footnote somewhere) that VJ has sung with a host of "new" male voices at the inauguration of their singing/composing careers: Gangai Amaran, Rajkumar Bharathi, Chandrabose, Krishnachander ,TL Maharajan Ramesh, Raj Seetharaman, Seergazhi Sivachidambaram...
And most of these duets have been memorable - Abinaya Sundari, Kanniththaene Ival Maane, Margazhi Pookkale, Pillai Manam Vellai Manam, Mazhaikkala Megam Neer Kondu Vandhu, Idhu Rosaappoovu...

Naaz,
"mArgazi pUkkaLE" is indeed a beautiful song. But "illam sangeetham" was immensely popular. During those days audio cassettes and tape recorders were still a novelty. The popularity of a song depended very much on All India Radio, and a little on tea shops, bike renting shops and public meetings. There were too many good songs coming out of TFM at that time but unfortunately all of them did not get their due airtime. Because of that many songs and singers have disappeared forever. How long has it been since you last listened to a TFM song by, say M.R.Vijaya?

Naaz,
thanks.
Saravanan,
Thanks for pegging it at 1980. that would explain it. i was away to neighbouring AP during the period.
Still being part of the MSV bandwagon it beats me how none of the songs rung a bell. also with Sripriya around :-) i'll catch up one of these days.
Naaz,
what about today's SOTd aren't you biting the bait? ;-))

You are welcome. Do check out the songs (if the files are still up at the website.) Please listen to Aaththoram Kodi Veedu after you've heard the duets. It is an unusual composition (with that unmistakable MSV sheen and brilliance) and KDs diction is something to relish - how you say - it's what separates the men from the boys :-)
Lines to behold are:
Kannan Idhazhgal Enbadhu Poo Medai, Idhayam Enbadhu Pooncholai...Naan Konda Varamallavo (the last word is worth lingering on, and VJ lingers delectably, wistfully for second...)
The other scintillating bit is:
Ennai Kannan Konjiya Kaalangal, Kadhal Pongiya Nerangal....Endhan Kannam Kaatiya Kolangal, Innum Kaetana Ennangal....Anandha Iravallavo (once again, on the last phrase, the voice turns toward erotic anticipation.)
To match the alliteration/consonance flowing from KDs pen, the voice has to dot the INs/ANs and slide out simultaneously with arousal and eagerness (eshewing artificiality/mawkishness.) The thought of consummation brims in every word, and desire is divined with a godly purity (Kannan and Kannadasan - would they settle for less?) Sexual Bliss is not cheap and vulgar - for if it were so - then the union could only be physical and tawdry. The song epitomises tantric* yearning as a ladder to the heavens. The body, an essential conduit; the voice a clear "apsara" song that would (and here, has to) make even the god(s) swoon.
(*The interspersed slokas are not incidental. They are the Mystic spine of the song. Without them, the above reading of the lyrics would be soulless and lacking the possibility of magic in an earthly union.)
KD-MSV-VJ had other such moments of transcendent desire - a few randoms:
Ammamma Aasai Pogum Vegam, Engengo Ennaikkondu Pogum (Kuppaththu Raja)
Neerada Neram Nalla Neram (Vaira Nenjam)
Andha Neram Poruththirundhal Nalla Anubavam Kidaiththirukkum (Thillu Mullu)

I just heard the "High on a hill" song. What a song! I was so awestruck by this multidimensional song. And VJ sounds very nice. Of course, BMK doesn't need any special mention. He carried the song wonderfully. Thanks a lot for this incredible number.
It is interesting to note that two English verses, two Telugu verses and one Hindi verse forms the lyric for this "Tamil" song.
