This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

SECTION 38
FILMS OF THE YEAR 1961 ( not included are the MGR and Sivaji films as I intend to discuss them separately)
PANITHIRAI
Gemini Ganesan and Saroja Devi star in this film. There are three very nice songs worth mentioning.
1. There is a wonderful song by P. Suseela, very well written by Kannadasan on the marriage event in Tamil community. The song touches on the feelings of the bride as well as her parents. The tune itself is very well composed to accommodate the descriptions and the feelings expressed.
Varuga varuga Enru
Solli Azhaippar
Silar Vaasal vazhiyil Ninru Panner Thelippaar
2. There is a duet by PBSreenivas and P. Suseela. The tune is taken form a Hindi song.
Ore Kelvi Ore Kelvi Enthan Nenjile
Ore bathil Ore bathil Enthan Nenjile
1. PB Sreenivos sings a philosophical solo, expressing the split character of human beings
Etho Manithan Piranthuvittaan
Avan Eno Marampol Valarnthuvittaan
PANAM PANTHIYILE
This film has stars such as S.S. Rajendran, M.R. Radha, A. Karunanithi, Vijayakumari, Pushpalatha, Rajshree, and V.K. Ramasamy.
Songs are all by Ka Mu Sheriff.
The famous songs in this movie are:
1.Seergazhi Govindarajan sings this sad song:
Panam Panthiyile Gunam Kuppayile-Ithai
Paarthu Arinthu Nadakkathavan Manithanille
Pizhaikkum Manithanille
2. TMS and S. Raajalakshmi sing this comedy based song
TMS-Thattam Kadayile Thaali Irukku
Javuli kadayile Selai Irukku
Kattiya Maalayum Vaangi Varen
Kalyanam Ingey Nadathidalaam
Kalyanam Ingey Nadathidalaam
SR: Ullam Oru Manam Patta Pinee
Odiyaa Pogum Kinathu Thanni
Kallamillamal Pazhaguvom
Kaalam varum Varai Kaathiruppom
3. TMS sings this beautiful song
Aadavendum Paadavendum Inbamaaga
Thinam Aanum Pennum Kooda Vendum Kumbalaaga
Paaduppatta Aluppu Theerum Aattam Aadinaa-Nalla
Pasiyum Kooda Paranthupogum Paattu paadinaa
4. TMS and P. Suseela sing this song
PS: Kallum Kallum Mothum Pothu Kanal Pirakkuthu
Kathiravanai Kaanum Pothu Kamalam Malaruthu
TMS: Nalla Nilavai Kandal Kadalum Pongi Peruguthu
Naalum Namma Nenjukkulle Kathal valaruthu
5. A Sithar paadal has been adapted by Ka MU Sherrif and sung by TMS:
Irukkum Idathai Vittu Illatha Idathilellaam
Viruppudan Thediduvaar Gnanathangame! –Avar
Ethum Ariyaradi Gnanathangame
(This is the song that was confused with a similar song in Thiruvarut Chelvar)
This film was known for the good songs, more than other aspects. An average movie with good songs.
KUMUTHAM
Kumutham would remain one of the best works for KVM. All the songs are simply superb and enchanting. Most of the songs are by Ka Mu Sheriff.
1. Seergazhi Govindarajan sings this song that gives ample glorification on the sculptures of Mahapalipuram.
Kalliley kalai Vannam Kandaan-IRu
Kanpaarvai marinthaalum Kaanum Vagai Seithaan
2. M.S. Rajeswary sings what was called a cat song, and she was also called a cat singer following the success of this song. The song was originally sung in Hindi. The song is:
Meow meow punaikkutty
Veettai Suthum Poonaikkutty
Athaan Manasu Vellaikkatti
Avar Azhagai Paaradi Cellakkutti
3. TMS and AL Ragavan sing this comedy song. TMS sings for MR Radha and ALR sings for A. Ramarao. Here we see the ability of TMS in suiting his voice even for MR Radha. The song goes:
Kayame Ithu Poiyada….
Sarakku Irunthaal Avizhtuvidu-Illa
Sallam Pottu Nee Odividu
4. A happy song by P. Suseela
Kalyanam aanavare Sowkiama
Unga Kannana Penmayilum Sowkkiama
5. A sad song by P. Suseela
Nil Angey Nil Ange
Enna un Ithayam
6. A duet by Seergazhi Govindarajan and P. Suseela:
Ennai Vittu Odi Poga Mudiyuma ini Mudiyuma
Naam Iruvaralla Oruvar Ini Theriyuma
7. The all time famous song by TMS and K. Jamunarani is a dance song where Kallapart Nadarajan and his collegues perform a well choreopgraphed gypsy dance. MRRadha and BS Saroja appear in part of the dance scene. This famous song is:
K. Jamunarani: THODATHEY!….Maama Maama Maama
TMS - Yemaa Yemaa Yemaa?
THAYILLA PILLAI
This is a movie that could well be described as an all rounded success. There were good actors, actresses, dances, fine music and of course the dialogue of Mu Karunanithi add value. Some of the best tunes of KVM are in this film. Kalyankumar, L. Vijayalachumy, TS Balaiya and MV Rajamma are the main stars.
1. A love duet by PB Sreenivas and P. Suseela, very well written by Marudhakazi
Padikka Vendum Puthiya Paadam vaathiyaraiia
Pazhaya padam Thevai Illai vathiyaraiya
Parvai Chollum Paadam Kandey Vizhikkirenamma-Naan
Padippathengey Puthiya paadam Vaathiyaramma (PBS and I had a long discussion on this song in 1984 at the Woodlands Drive In. One of his best he said. He liked the music and lyrics)
2. Then comes one of the best of Kannadasan and of Suseela as well. KVM has rendered something new altogether, with the music starting with beating of drums. It’s a dream scene. This is one of my favourite songs. I hope readers are able to recollect the tune, and the scene to enjoy the fullest.
Thotta Kaikal Thavazhnthathadi Pattu Poley
Kai Pattavudan Naan Malarnthen Mottu Pole
Katti Vaiutha Kaathal Malar Kothu Pole-Avar
Kaikalukkul Naan Irunthen Muthu Pole
Koodi Vantha Megam Enru Koonthalai Thottaqar-Vanna
Kuvalai Pola Malarnthathenru Kangalai Thottaar
Odi Vantha Kanikalendru Ithazhgalai Thottaar
Thoittaal Odiyum Enru Idaiyai Mattum
Thodamaley Vittaar.
Maanmagale Enru Azhaippar Ennai
Madiyil Vaithu vaarthai Padithaar
Maambazham Pol Kannamendru Solli Mudithaar
Maambazham Pol Kannamendru Solli Mudithaar
Naan Vaii Thiranthu Pesa Vanthen Onru Koduthaar
Onru Koduthaar
This is a song that fans of Tamil literature would very much appreciate.
3. P. Suseela and Seergazhi Govindarajan sing this comedy song:
Vamma Vamma Chinnamma
Vayasu Vantha Ponnamma
Intha Neram Kaattukkule Engu Vanthaai Sollamma
Vaiya Vaiya Sinnaiya
Vayasu vanthaa Ennaiyaa
Unnnai Tedi Kaattukkulle
Odi Vantha Ponnaiyaa
4. Soolamangalam Rajalachumy sings a beautiful thaalattu song.
Chinna Chinna Ooraniyaam
Then Manakkum Solaigalaam
Ooraniyin Karayil Ongi Nikkum mamaramaam
Mamarathu Kilaithanile Maadapopura Koodukalaam
Koodukalil Kudi Irukkum Kunjukalaam Pinjugalaam
Many of us would be aware that Kannadasan made a mistake in this song. It was not metaphorically composed and Karunanithi, as well as a few ardent fans of Kanadasan querried a particular line “Mamarathu Lilaithanile Maadapopura Koodukalaam” They argued Maadappoura never builds its nest on a mango tree. Karunanithi also questioned the lines. Kannadasan was put on a tight spot. Kannadasan was not able to answer. One reader answered to this effect “ The line is correct. A child, which is supposed to grow in a bungalow, happens to grow in a hut, and a child who belongs to hut is brought up in a bungalow. Symbolically the line fits very well” Kannadasan who was relieved immediately responded by saying that that was the spirit in which the line was written.
5. TMS sings a very sad song that goes
Oorar Adithuvittaal Thaayaar aniathiruppaaal
6. AL Ragavan sings a simple comedy song that has a Chinese tune, and was very popular in those days.
Kadavulum Naanum Oru jathee -Oru Jathee
Antha Gouravam enakku Sari Pathee Sari Pathee
7. AL Ragavan and LR Eswari and group sing a philosophical song with a comedy touch.
Kaalam Maruthu Nalukku Naalu
Karuthu Maaruthu Oorukku Ooru
Kolam Maruthu Aalukku Aalu
Kolgai Maruthu Veettukku Veedu
8. There is another song by Balasaraswathy Devi, written by Kothamangalam Subbu. The scene was not there when I saw the film. The song is:
Seeraarum Paingiliye Sinnanjiru Puthumalare
Aaraaro Aaramuthe Thaalelo
Vanakkam

Mani Sir, Welcome Back! You have given so much information again-Thank you.
Some points:
1.Panithirai had one good comedy song 'Maamiyaarukku oru seithi'-sung by Seergazhi Govindarajan and TV Rathnam.
2.Padikka vendum pudhiya paadam was sung by PBS and Jamunarani.
3.Are you sure about Ka Mu Sheriff writing lyrics for Kumudham? I thought Kumudam songs were by Maruthakasi and Kannadasan.

Saravanan
Thanks for mentioning about the song Maamyialukku.
I have alos left out onw more song and that is "Irukkum Idam Ingey" by Suseela. Likewise I have left out one more song in Panam Panthiyle and that is a duet by TMS and S. Janaki. The song is "enguminge Iyatkayin Kaatchi"
2. Yes Padikka Vendum is by PBS and Jamunarani. A line in this song "Kitte Senru Thottaal Kulirum Puthu Neruppu- Naam Etti Chendraal Sudum Neruppu enna Neruppu?" Is this lifted from Thirukkural? Can anyone enlighten?
Ka Mu Sheriff has written for Panam Panthiyile and not Kumudam.
Kumudam songs:
1.Kallile Kalaivannam- Maruthakazi
2. Meow Meow Punaikkutti- Maruthakazi
3. Maama Maama Maama- Maruthakasi
4. Kalyanam aanavare- Kannadasan
5.Nil Angey- Kannadasan

Mani sir,
you are wonderful.
By the way, it might be a good idea to compose separately in a text-file, then cut and paste. Don't struggle with the small edit window.
Keep them coming. :-)
