MS, I dont know what made you like the song so much. I think it is a pretty ordinary composition, sometimes bordering on mediocrity.

Song of the Day: konjum manjaL pookkaL from ullaasam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/konjummanjal.rm
- Sung by Hariharan and Harini. Music by Karthik Raja.
- Ullaasam was the heavily hyped film that was going to change the careers of Karthik Raja, the director duo JD-Jerry and Vikram. It was the first venture of ABCL in thamizh. Unfortunately, the film flopped (and rightfully so, its weak storyline couldn't be masked by stylish direction and excellent music). Karthik Raja gave several good numbers in this album; This one is my pick. Veesum kaatrukku is probably more melodious but it is copied from a song in Pocahontas, I believe.
- I don't remember the picturization of this song, but Rajaraman nominated it for the worst picturization among songs released in 1997.

I think this is picturized on Vikram and Maheshwari.
Over hyped movie, which went into box soon!

bb,
picturization of this song had 'panja boothangaL' in background - and many theatres removed (call it 'edited') this song on the first week itself ;-)
Who is the lyricst ? Pazhanibharathy ? (He is the lyricst for 'veesum kaatRukku', and aRivumathi for another beautiful number 'Yaaroo yaar yaaroo', I am not sure abt this one !)

Cholaare chocholaare sung by SPB was also a lift. Between YSR and KR they have barely given 10-15 songs worth hearing. adhula 4 paattu lift vera. Lets hope atleast Bhavatharini's stint as a MD is more successful :-)

Yes, Pazhani Bharathi was the lyricist for this song too.

Lyrics by Pazhani Bharathi.
Attracted by the pre-release hype, along with some similarly deceived friends, I saw the film within few days of its release in an already near-empty Devi (First week of July '97)--lots of gloss, and that was all :(
The songs were very popular at that time though, Muthe Muthamma especially.
As to the filming of this song--the picturization was, ahem--konjam risqué ;)

Probably the best song of Karthik Raja's slumping career. The 2 Haris gave some wonderful duets together and this one ranks among their best. I find many KR songs riddled with musical distractions like a novice artist using up every colored paint in each piece. Something came over him for this song, maybe papa was watching, he has sustained a good melody and crafted the interludes to enhance rather than take away from the sandham. A delight.

good choice bb...I second udhaya that this was the best song of KR's career... Hari was at the peak during this time and both hariharan and harini renderred the song pretty well... I never saw this song in the movie but i remember seeing this song sometime in TV where vikram was dressed like a king.. other notable song in the movie was 'yaaro yaar yaaro'..veesum kaatrukku was a decent melody.. muthe muthamma, cholare cho cholare and 'vaalibam vaazha sollum' (which has the infamous prabhudeva rap ) were all run of the mill.. overall it was probably the best album that KR could muster in his career..

konjum manjal is an excellent song.
I feel that this song is based on the style of "Enigma". Especially, the chanting kind of interludes remind me of chants in Enigma(Gregorian chants or something, i am not sure).
Another song that I feel was based on the Enigma style was the excellent "theendai" from En Swasa Katre by ARR.

Song of the Day: EdhO oNNu from solla marantha kathai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ethoonnu.rm
- Sung by Karthik and Bhavatharini. Music and lyrics by Ilayaraja.
- Solla marantha kathai was released in 2002. It was the second film directed by Thangar Bachaan, after the hit film Azhagi. The film starred Cheran, who has cemented his place as an actor since then with his film 'Autograph'. The film's story revolved around a young man who is forced to marry a rich girl and is humiliated at every turn by his in-laws.
The movie was a tearjerker that couldn't repeat the success of Azhagi.
IR's music in this film was mixed. There were a couple of songs like 'un kuththamaa' and 'jakkamma' that were not worth recounting, but 'kaattile thalai aattura' (Vidhu Prathapan), 'gundu malli' (Shreya Ghoshal and Harish Raghavendra) and today's SOTD made the grade. This song is my pick from the album.
- Karthik and Bhavatharini also sang 'oLiyilE therivathu' from azhagi (http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/357.html ).

Am wondering if this pick was after listening to it in Jaya TV's
Ragamaalika y'day morning :-) . Bhavathaarini judged the episode. Nice song
that'd have everyone humming after the first listen itself.

Good song. 'Kaatile thalai aatura' would have been my pick, though.
Btw, Rathi peyarai solla marandhadhu yeno? :)

yea shekar, watched the episode. even the Anal Thanil song from chandralekha was a rare pick.
very nice to listen to such forgotten melodies atleast in tv shows. By the way, I feel Ragamalika on Jaya tv insists only on IR songs. inference after watching a lot of episodes.

Not only rathi, a lot of vital information like the producers, banner, financiers etc were left out. I was expecting "someone" to fill in those info a couple of posts later, but alas still unable to see. :-)
As expected, NagaS came with is clarification, and one small info...ejjatly...the raaga of this song by "ILayaragam IR_Fan" is also missing. :-)
Hoping these information will be given asap.
