Dear Friends,
I am starting this thread as of late I happen to hear people saying that "Raja is for Melody and Rahman is for Rhythm"! But in my opinion, Raja is the King of Everything! Because in Rhythm, He has done songs with rhythm instruments only like :
1)"Raja Rajadhi" - Agni Natchathiram
2)"Ilam Nenje Vaa" - Vanna Vanna Pookkal
etc.,etc., I would like to get more of His special rhythms! Please post relevant postings only!
NOTE : THIS THREAD IS FOR TFM FANS ONLY WHO KNOW RAJA'S HISTORY AND WHO DON'T MAKE ANY USELESS AND MISLEADING COMMENTS! PLEASE BE DECENT TOO!

In my earlier posting, I asked a doubt. I asked others to correct me if I am wrong. The reason for me to write so is all these days I have been beleiving that that perticular song is by chandrabose. I played bangos on some function for that song when I was probably 13 or 14. I was taught by a guitar teacher, who probably did not like IR and I remember him saying that IR over uses flute very much almost in every song. I think that he told me that the perticular song is by CB and since he taught me to play bangos for that perticular song I beleived that IR could not have done music for it. I did not cross check.
Can you give me a link to prove this. I am still not convinced as I have been beleiving it otherwise for years.

A guitar teacher who does not like IR (strange :) ) and who thinks IR overuses flute teaches somebody to play bangos for a song which relies on guitar and flute..Interesting..
Did Chandrabose do songs with this level of guitar or flute playing ? With strings, carnatic and rockish style interludes in one song ?

CF: pUvE chempUvE was composed by ir. the movie has two more good songs: enathu vizhi vazhi mElE and thEnmozhi anputh thEnmozhi. chandhrabose started out as a good composer. he could have been a tough competitor to ir if he had retained the magic of "mAmpUvE ciRu mainAvE"; but no.], he lost it soon and did movies like viduthalai (which had a sweet song - nIlakkuyilkaL reNdu) and rAja chinna rOjA (both of them in the late 80's as was chollath thudikkuthu manasu).
re. flute and ir: yeah! ir did "over use"flute in his songs. he uses flute as a "filler" instrument in lots of his songs. maybe, he read cilappatikAram before he entered tfm and wanted to put in practice the principles outlined by iLangkO!

I donno whether you have habit of buying golden oldies..Being a music lover of everybody's, I believe you do so. Do you have any stipulations in going for IR's gems. Then let me explain you. If you happen to buy 5 different albums of IR atleast 3 of them contain the above said song. Conversely, buying KJY albums, you find this particular one so often repeating in many albums, if not in every one. I am sorry if are unaware of this song. However, you being both IR and ARR listener (what you profess), I was little surprised to see such a doubt. Moreover, if you get a chance listen to the song deeply, (I post it for you http://www.swara.com/index3.shtml?string=Solla%20Thudikkuthu%20Manasu&index=movie)
it is so typical of IR and listen to the total, effortless fluency with which instruments transform. How unfeelingly can you offer this Regal chair to Chandrabose. Oh man...don't devalue your future claims by committing such slip-ups....

guys,
Don't blame my teacher who taught me guitar. I was with him for just one and a half years. It was my mistake for not cross checking the fact. No body else told me either, before this.
I have not listened so much of this song. Yes, I come accross this song in tv, but that heroin looks too bad and I usually pass on to some other channel. I might have did so as I have been thinking that it is by CB and I don't have any facination to listen to him.
Another good reason, why I thought it is by CB is, if you listen to that song in between the charanams the music becomes very noisy and hard. And suddenly, the melodious voice of KJY comes. I still don't like this transition in that song.
I happened to say the same thing to some of my friends, when we used to listen this song by chance and I used to say that that is how an ameture MD used to compose, bringing in non related transitions in between the song.
Any how, I accept my mistake.

On the topic of Rhythm, I want to share my opinions on IR's usage of instruments. He has used tabla, mridhangam and drums very well. He has these percussion alone and in combination creating unique rhythms. For eg. his usage of drums will teach a trick or two even to a top level rock group (I would even say Mickey Hart would be impressed). I have never mridhangam used like in say, varam thantha sAmikku in sippikkuL muthu or andhi mazhai in rAja pArvai. We all how well he used tabla. This even prompted a UK tabla artiste of Indian origin (Talvin Singh) to collaborate with IR on a album.
Also, it was not just percussion that was maintaining the rhythm in IR's songs. The interludes many times did not have any percussion but still managed to keep the rhythm and mood.
Sometimes I think people are incorrectly thinking it is only percussion that can maintain rhythm. (In another thread on AM Raja I have mentioned how rhytmic the songs themselves are)

Sabesan and suresh:
I did not undergo a formal music trainig. It was just a class in one of schools and it was an hour period twice a week. I took up guitar class, just to escape from the sun , because I would have been doing gardening or something else if I had not taken up guital class.
To be a music lover I don't think that one need to have a formal music knowledge. And to come to a conclusion that all musically knowledgable person should like IR is also cruel. Every body has their own taste. I have already mentioned what IR means to me. I have also mentioned that I have not listened to all his 4000 songs and many songs passed me without me knowing that it is from IR.
I think you people are still caught up with VM. It's hard to digest fact.
As I was answering to a specific question on VM on some thread, I can again very well say that VM still is popular ,if not amoung others, atleast amoung you.
