The director and his team ahs returned from Amsterdam after shooting a song for a whopping Rs 1.5 crores! The costliest film in the history of Tamil cinema is ‘Anniyan’ starring Vikram and directed by Shankar. This is the first tie that they are working together. Oscar V Ravichandran is producing the film. Two songs have been recorded. Vairamuthu ahd written the lyrics and Harris Jayaraj had composed music for the film. One of the songs has been picturized at Amsterdam.shoot sequence lasted 15 days. Amsterdam is famous for its flower exhibition that happens once every year. The exhibition is going to be the highlight of the song. Vikram and Sadha have been shot singing duets amidst these colorful flowers. Vivek is also featured in the song.This song alone had cost more than Rs 1.5 Crores! You could have made a film with that money alone!

I am too wondering why Shankar opted for HJ,as pointed out by Piratheepan Shankar could have opted for Yuvan,the tunes from him will sound better than this HJ.

shankar is a pathetic director.

U've gotta admit one thing. Whatever he does, he does it on a humongous scale! And he believes in his vision. And w/ Anniyan, if the story that was given earlier was to be believed, he's taking a huge risk. We've gotta wish him luck.
I really do wish Anniyan's a hit.. at least for Shankar's sake.

Let him take risk with his money boss. No one is stopping him from doing that...He has a very BAD attitude. Having talent is a different thing and reaching pinnacle like MR is a different thing.
Shankar's kadhalan(except for ARR),jeans(except for aishwarya rai and ARR), boys(except for ARR) what was there in his movies buddy?
He is neither a classy director like bharathiraja of 80's or Maniratnam. Neither is he a masala director like sp muthuraman or dharani.
Rendan kattan director who is making life miserable for producers. Thats it...

Mudalvan his home production was taken in a shoestring budget but Nayak ??? which made AM.Ratnam go to doldrums.

Shankar's non-socio-politico movies are pretty bad (of course except for the music), but his Gentleman, Indian & Mudhalvan were simply amazing!
Yes, they could have been better..but the ideas were awesome and the execution almost perfect.
I guess all he needs to do is concentrate more on such movies and polish the end-product. I still feel he is a director who has a tremendous potential, but is unnecessarily getting sucked into catering to the masses.

shankar is a good director but very raw.......u can call him "Naattu sarakku" but used to be packaged in lovely glass bottles(ARR)........Mudhalvan story is one of the most sensational scripts i have seen in my lifetime....

MADDY,
I agree with you. Shankar is yet to mature. He wants to cover some sections of the society (don't want to bring caste issues here). All his films from Gentlemen are targeted on covering or pleasing specific caste of people. Aniyan is no such exception.
Further, about Mudhalvan, yes its the most non sensational script I have seen. The dialogs are so artificial (especially Manivannan's). Manisha's SOPLAN etc is disgusting. Same is the case with BOYS. Several Scenes of BOYS irrated me to the core. He is a good technocrat, with obsence ideas.

For your information it was TOPLAN and not SOPLAN... wondering why it is disgusting??? MAybe I didn't catch the meaning?
"He is a good technocrat, with obsence ideas"
En paa periya periya varthayaellam use panriga?
I personnaly feel that Shanker is a very good director. Just watch Indian... The only problem with him is that he has been always trying to make films with serious subjects followed by "love" films.
Gentleman ----> Serious,
Kadhalan----> "love",
Indian----> Serious,
Jeans,----> "love"
Mudhalvan----> Serious,
Boys----> "love"
Anniyan----> Seems to be serious!
Apart from Kadhalan I feel that there was nothing really innovative or captivating in his "love" oriented films...
Hope that after Anniyan he gets back to ARR and give us some big blockbuster.

Vaz,
Gentleman ----> Serious, -- Is "Dikkilona" serious stuff?
Kadhalan----> "love", -- Pettai Rap rather Crap, Mukkalla Mukkabula (I don't know if this is all love).
Indian----> Serious, -- The only good movie till date from him.
Jeans,----> "love" -- Very artificial, no real story, but may be entertainment (World wonders)
Mudhalvan----> Serious, -- TOPLAN (I don't know the meaning either). Very Childish imagination of the whole story line.
Boys----> "love" -- Its not love but adolocent SEX
Anniyan----> Seems to be serious! -- Will wait to comment

"Indian----> Serious, -- The only good movie till date from him. "
Yes very good movie but........
An oldie walks into a TV station, nobody watches him.
Correctly operates all the equipments to show a murder live, in any country will there be a tv station without even 1 person in it.
Super Logic shankar.

Watching tamil movies itself is a destruction of all logics as firm as sun rising in east and people breathing.

t,
Perhaps u didnt get that part..
He doesnt walk into a TV station to murder him..neither is it aired live.
He manages to flick a cassette recorded for the News, records his murder, and puts it back.
Wait.. this sounds unbelievable too.. but it was superbly executed. :)
Dorai,
Gentleman, as a whole, was a serious entertainer. And an absolutely brilliant debut. Kaundamani and Senthil's comedy track-a serthengana endha padamum serious illai!
As for Kadhalan, (Shankar had mentioned that he'd like to do serious and love/light stories alternately..yup.. Kamal policy thaan.), it was meant to be a complete masala film! Neenga ellathukkum paata izhutha, idhu seriyae illai! :)
Pettai Rap, Mukkala sonengale.. Ennavale and Kadhalikkum Pennin paatugalai yaen vittutenga? :)
Indian. Sollave vendaam! Slickly taken. :)
Jeans-a first comedy-a edukalaamnu nenachaaru.. aparam ella elements-ayum saerkalaam try pannumbothu aana confusion thaan final movie! :)
Idhulayum niraya paatunga irukku. :)
Mudhalvan. It had one of the most unbelievable storylines. But he made u see the film in entirity w/o making u think "Is this possible" (while seeing the movie.. Once u come outta the theatre, u tend to start thinkin abt whether it's possible.. adhu vera vishayam! :p ) Now that's a mark of a good director.
(A lotta Mani Ratnam films are also like that. He makes totally unbelievable stuff seem do practical!)
Boys. An experiment that bombed. Avalo thaan. And surely not a movie to watch w/ ur family! But that was not his target audience neways.
Anyways, I'm a fan of Shankar jus coz of his style. Brilliant technique combined w/ an honest approach to storytelling.
Disclaimer: All these were IMHO. :)

Just like me... Well said man.
For me Indian is just one of the best tamil movies... And i also just loved Mudhalvan... because I never asked myself questions about "plausibility" while watching a tamil movie.
Nowadays there are talented directors like
Sharavanan Shubbaiya, Murugadoss...
but somehow they are just following Shanker's filmmaking style.
