Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

I wonder if even IR thought about this song in these terms. Thanks for that excellent and colourful description of "Nalam Vazha". I enjoyed reading through all of your discussions on this thread. Your interpretations are quite admirable and very insightful as well. Keep up the good work!!

Dear dhan,
Thanx for your notification. But I knew it before. In my discussion I had said that it is the favorite of KJ and not "sung by" KJ. This I inferred from an interview of KJ in TV. He was asked about the song which he liked the most and sung by SPB. He gave the above reply. When SPB was asked the similar question about KJ he sited "Amma endrazhaikkadha uyirilaaiyey".
Dear Nirupama,
thanx for the encouragement.

Dear Srinath,
Thanx for the compliment. But I seriously do not know if the lyrics are the way you say. I agree with you about recording quality fully though I have not heard "ellorukkum" many times. I do not know either if it was released simulateneously with "Roja".

Nalam Vazha copied from Jagjit singh' ghazal?
Seems like an interesting song, like Megame, Megame.

Nithin:
May I roast in hell if I ever accuse IR of copying and that too from a Hindi Ghazal !!!
There is no similarity between the two songs. Like all ghazals the Hindi number is soft, soothing, pleasant and no great shakes - very much unlike 'Nalam Vaazha...' which depicts grandeur with just three main instruments - the flute, violin and classical guitar.
The movie was a remake and obviously the same sequence appears with a song sung by AS's character - which I think is Raj Kiran in Hindi, Revathi's role essayed by Shabana Azmi (the other way round actually, since the Hindi version came long before Marubadiyum). And no, there aren't a thousand candles in the Hindi original, just a simple birthday cake, I think. I haven't seen either movie, just the songs on T.V. And surprisingly both songs were equally good. I usually find that when somebody remakes a movie, he either makes it better or worse, rarely as good. For example, I found that I liked Thillu Mullu better than the Hindi original Goal Maal, though I am not particularly fond of Rajni or MSV while I admire Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Amol Palekar and RDB. But 'Nalam Vaazha' and 'Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho' were equally good in terms of conveying the mood. The lyrics were very good in Hindi too (of what little I remember).
Actually, 'Nalam Vaazha' always reminds me of 'Poongodi thaan poothathamma' from Idhayam, wonder why...

Srinath
I think Nithin mistook what you posted before. I dont think you need to get upset.
You know when you hear Jagjit he touches your heart. The song "Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho" was too good.
Murali shankar,
You are hiding your talents man. Bring it out frequently. I think there are lot of people in this DF to appreciate your talents. I just saw your lyrics in other thread. Its great. The way you interpreted the song, the way you listen to a song, is different.
BTW when I saw this movie, I couldnt realise this much about the song. Later on when I used to listen this song more and more, I used to find out lot of things from this song each time I listened to this song. I really wonder the efforts and pain taken by IR, SPB and others in great songs like this. I really wonder how SPB could do justice to songs even though he sings 10-15 songs a day. Thats the reason why I admire him.
"Oru vaasal moodi maruvaasal vaippan Iraivan" is the best sentence one can write. So philosophical. This can be applied to any situation.
Thanks

Pardon me for buting in, but how about "Uravugal Thodarkathai" from "Aval Appadithan"? I think every aspect of that song is phenomenal. Anybody think it worthwhile?

Just wondering if we can discuss Mounamaana Neram from Salangai Oli - An outstanding song from IR, and picturised /directed by K Viswanath, with subtle emotions/moments rarely seen in movies.

Let us start "Uravugal thodargathai". I think the film was Raja's thirteenth of his career. Please contrast this with "Machchaanai Paartheengala". We come to know the difference in the style he could produce just after a span of ten films. "Uravugal" is a well orchestrated western melody whereas the other is a folk based song though the guitar chords in the backdrop remained unnoticed.
Situation:
Sripriya(S) is filled with distress as whichever male she had trusted had betrayed her. She wants a soothing partner which she 'thinks' she finds in the hero H(though KH is the real hero). She finds him to be a great piano player. The music he plays is smooth that she slowly yields herself to him. This is the theme. The song is similar to "Nalam vaazha" in the first aspect though is much stronger and explicit in expression. The H tries to console her by playing the piano. The lyrics go as follows:
"Uravugal thodargathai
Unarvugal sirugathai"
He says
"Dear lady! All these days, you had taken decisions so impusively that they had put you in short term relations. A short story is exciting but ephimeral. A novel is longer but deeper in thought and healthy for a good length reading. Why shan't we get into a relation more love oriented than lust ? Uptil now, you were riding on impulses, thus falling and peaking in your life. come with me , i give you my pulse only to make you happy forever."
He tries to tell her that his relation with her shall be different from the one she had been having with others (though in the movie it turns out to be a lie). It shall be based on the solid foundation of love and not infatuation alone.
"Un nenjiley Baaram Atharkaagavey naanum
sumai thaangiyai maaruvaen
Un kanngalin oaram etharkaagavo eeram
kanneerai naan maatruvaen"
comparing this with "Manithargal sila neram" stanza of "Nalam Vaazha" we see that in both the songs the Heroes try to console their beloved first. The difference is that in "nalam Vaazha" we see AS imparting confidence into R thus making her mentally prepared for any tough situation whereas in "Uravugal" we see H telling S that he shall take care of all her worries. Thus the former is friendly in intonation whereas the latter is more possessive and caring.
Noting that the first interlude is based on Veena with an ovetone of smoothness and sadness we come to the lines:
"Vedhanai theeralam
Verumpani vilagalaam
Vennmegamey pudhu azhagiley naamum inaiyalaam"
Now that he has conveyed his readiness to comfort her, he slowly but firmly (unlike Nalam Vaazha) proposes to her in the above said lines. The "laam" ending of the lines tend to create not uncertainty but a hypnotic effect on the heroine.
I think the second interlude is synchronous with their entering the bedroom. The violins and the flute piece are indicative of a joyous mood.
"Vaazhvenbadho Geetham
valargindratho naadham
naalondrilum aanandham
Nee kandatho thunbam
Ini vaazhvelaam inbam
suga raagamey aanandham"
Thus he invites her to coalesce with him.
"Nadhiyiley pudhuppunal kadaliley kalandhadhu
Nam sondhamo indru inaindhdhdhu inimai pirandhadhu"
Now that his art of seduction has culminated he declares his result. She has succumbed to his desire.
Please throw more light for a healthy appreciation of the song which I consider is one of the all- time greats of IR.
Regards
Murali Sankar
