In an effort to make dhool a li'l more comprehensive, we are adding a section "chords" for some songs. This table is presently hidden since we have chords only for a few songs. DFers can mail their own set of chords for the songs they have played / written in the format suggested in the Chords conventions page. Take a look at the way the page is arranged and send your chords to andholanam@hotmail.com. Try to make it as complete and accurate as possible including the interludes. This will help others who are searching for chords to use them. Appropriate credits shall be given to those who send the files.
(1) Paatu paadava

"Polyphonic carnatic music is something nice, we have it in temples, listen to thriupavai rendering by groups, they go in unison and perfect harmony..."
Srik,
Does it mean that we can sing a melody in the first, third and fifth note as the key to that scale ? I mean, if a group could sing the melody at 1,3,5 'kattais', as it seems to me to sound when I hear the Thevaram renderings?

da vinci, it is not that simple as you have asked, this works only for something called "homophonic" - chants or solokas where where there is are not many glides of notes.
WE need to maintian raga element in carnatic, when harmony takes over, it is hard to satisfy it.
They are very hard to be harmonized properly.
imo, in hardcore carnatic, melody itself gets the beauty with the raga, we dont need other elements to lift it.
I heard a program in JJ tv couple of years back by ganesh & kumersh where they have tried something similar that you have mentioned. They harmonized few kiritis, however it did not take off as expected among carnatic rasigas. I liked the experimentation however.
apart from them, imo L.Shanker, L.Subbramainan,Guitar Prasanna are few popular musical gaints who can do these quite well.

Hello Musicians and Connoiseurs:
Here I see some achievers in music, good teachers and wonderful friends...I humbly would like to share a very simple melody...Please note that this is not to make any detour but just to share my joy and experience with fellow musicians...in anycase I sincerely wish this posting doesn't spoil the spirit and integrity of the thread and continue sharing your knowledge with each other as usual. This is one of the good threads.

As the name suggests, I tried being humble with the melody even if it could be a backup.
Regards,
Aditya

excellent sensible postings.
L Shankar can be said as pioneer in this effort.
way back in 70s he has tried lot of stuffs.
Ofcourse 'carnatic pundits' complaint.
to an extent one guy commented like this regarding his grammy, billboard nominated album Abheri 'Shankar needs to learn carnatic properly from tanjore, simple playing notes in different notes doesnt make you great' this kind of comments at one of world top violinist.
Thats the sabakedu of carnatic music,it will remain only as thengamudi music as long we have people like this.
Hope I have not offended any carnatic purist.

correction 'playing notes in different notes' should be 'playing notes in different speeds'

Let us continue where I left other day.
I managed to find some time to record the track that i promised. This is a tiny arrangement where I have tried to give emphasis to few things that I was talking about. As mentioned before I used the words "katodu kuzal ada ada" words to lead my melody.

Srikanth, the piece, as Radhika said, is superb. Having followed your compositions for years, this is quite different from your style. Excellent!

Srik,
Thanks for demonstrating with a beautiful piece. (Am I right in suspecting Mandolin Srinivas's style in it?).

da vinci :),
basically apart from trying out the music theory we discussed, I also tried to demonstrate that keyboard will sound great when played naturally ..
and properly. Srinivas style! I dont know, might be it is a natural instinct or insipiration from hearing Srinivas for 1/2 my life. :)
thanks a lot radika & bb for your comments.
so now let us move on,
actually this piece does not end here, if you listen to the score the ending bar tries to take you somewhere, (the final harp Q) now can someone guess how is going to move next?

Hello Naveen, nice to meet you too.
I found an intersting write up on picking chords. It is written by Manu Varghese - talented guitarist who now lives in BC, Canada. Check it out - its cool for people who play music by ear!
