Hi All,
Apologise for this sudden and unusual thread.
We have regular contributors and silent watchers in these forums, some new, some have been there since inception of the forums. Today we have a lot of new faces and there will be more.
I am just curious to know about which year/month did you join in the discussions here..
..I still remember chancing upon newtfmpage in Jan 2001 and sparking off a war in the 'IR's latest' thread unknowingly without realizing the ongoing IR-ARR fans blood feud ! A few of the DFers who were around (and are still)around were : kiru (the audiologist), bharath (a new generation fan), swami (sangeetha vidwan and once Bharath's nemesis!), common friend (a balanced fan), ambleen, eden(who got hurt when I said that he was still stuck in the 70s!), Karthik S (the music dealer who can make out a fake from an original!)...and a lot more interesting people that I have not mentioned !
Could you guys/gals tell us when and how you joined the discussions here and also narrate any funny incidents or discussions that had happened ?

Writing about my experiences with DF and DFers..hmm.. Will make me write essays :-)
I have been around from 98 August and there are many DFers with whom I have been associated either in the professional or personal mode. In fact, it has been a pleasure getting to know and and work with many and I have cherished every moment.
My knowledge improved tremendously from the discussions I have had in my early days of DFing. In fact the discussions of the early days were both verbose and contentful. A slightly offensive post in the earlier days always ensured a severely apologetic one to follow. Some manners were learnt too :-)
Some influences are worth mentioning:
(1) vehement loyalty of Srikanth infact pushed me to start looking into MSV's songs with great respect. And his own compositions gave me an idea as to how complex the mustical patterns are.
(2) rajaG - a genius from whom I have had many an advice- musical and otherwise - and still get.
(3) bb - admn of this page and a great friend.
(4) Srinath - the starting note with whom was a bit unpleasant but the progression was just the opposite :-)
(5) IR - if not for IR, ROS thread would not have been sustained. A great helper with a vast carnatic knowledge.
(6) vijay - with whom the discussions were always objective.
(7) Ranga - of forumhub whose humour and writing style are adorable.
(8) SL - a repertoire of knowledge.
and many unmentioned friends here who dont participate any more but have contributed greatly. Some DFers worth mentioning are - Shankar, RJAY,Swamiji,Prof Sathya keerthi, Shashi and ofcourse Rajaraman (RR) who conceptualized and make this DF happen.
FYI, there is a community behind the DF which is pretty closely linked. It just keeps getting better. Many approvals, dissents and neutral responses shared with many have given a clearer idea how to appreciate music and more. In fact dhool would not have happened if not for DF. Ravi (http://www.swara.com) and I, joined bb only after we participated here. And though there are plans for making dhool a complete DB site, presently, becauase of time constraints we have not been able to update it. We will surely take it up.
Was also able to find a few old buddies - Bharath, shaNMugam Murugappan etc..and that is an added bonus.
All these 4 yrs (almost) have been very pleasant and I hope this would continue this way for many more yrs to come.
that is kind of cutting it short..enough vaLA vaLa..:-)

G, the umass urls remind me of the servers Ravi used to post from which were named for the 7 sins, I think! Greed & Envy were the most frequently seen, followed by Gluttony, perhaps....? ;-)
I actually have emails from the 'legendary' Ravi briefly explaining how newtfmpage started :-) In fact, I have one where he confesses that he is a die-hard IR fan, but cannot express his bias openly due to his position as the admin ;-)
People would be amazed at the influence that newtfmpage has had on people's lives - some too private and personal to share! But I've benefitted a whole lot myself - from getting an opportunity to perform alongside the great rajaG and the almost-as-equally-great Anuradha Sriram ;-) to the not-quite-as-great-but-soon-will-be MS - my first encounter with MS itself was one for the ages :-)...in the 'Politeness and the DF' thread :-)
In about 5 years of participation in the DF, I've started all of 2 threads (Stranger in the Mirror and Songs that would make good Music Videos) and yet can confidently claim 100s of posts, all in my own name, often using my real email address - yeah, and proud of the fact that I never flamed anyone anonymously!!! Also, I would probably record some of the longest posts :-D with Raj coming a close second ;-)
Low point definitely was when a bunch of ARR fans got too personal against me (because I was slamming ARR as usual ;-)) and Ravi was forced to censor some discussions finally when the animosity spread against bb too. The good times were too many to count! But the 'dhkjkls....' thread which was later renamed to 'Humour and newtfmpage' or something like that, takes a special place in my heart :-) Ah, I miss bones' humour, though a lot of it was directed at IR :-)
And my own nemesis - to Srikanth goes that honor :-) - he is a good friend these days and we still keep in touch every now and then. And no, we've still not resolved the IR vs ARR debate :-)
I visit newtfmpage maybe once every few weeks but never post. I didn't want to post this time either, but the temptation was too strong to resist. Like some others here, one of the first things I did when I got to access the internet in late '96 - early '97 was to search for Ilayaraja and I chanced upon this site - when I saw people praising IR to the skies, I was happy that I'd finally found a place where there were others like me who were not completely swept away by ARR's magic to the extent that they'd ignored IR. I vowed to defend IR and I think I did a fairly committed job until I truly started appreciating the influence of IR's music in my life. At that point, I figured out that it didn't matter that someone else didn't share my tastes with the same passion. If any music makes you as happy as IR's music makes me, then I guess there's no more happiness that I can help bring your way by making you listen to IR's music. Nevertheless, just this past weekend, practising with MS, when we listened to 'Raja Raja Chozhan', I couldn't help wondering once again if happiness was indeed qualitative as I originally presumed it to be, or if it was merely quantitative as it had started to seem of late. Either way, I believe couldn't have asked for more!

wow! this is bringing a lot of veterans out of hiding. great!
as for me, I'm pretty much new to posting here. I've been an occasional visitor since sometime in 98. I spend a lot of time reading the archives - some great posts by people like Kanchana, Satya keerthi, Srinath vs Srikanth, pg, NOV, bones etc.. (sorry if I missed out on the others...)
I've been regular since I came to the US. Incidentally, I'm in umass and I heard that ravi is back here. It would be great if he (and the other old-timers) come out of their hibernation.

it is interesting to note that this forum (and internet as such) puts a sort of celebrity status on the early pioneers. for me atleast, it is a thrill to see the old names again. sort of nostalgia and appreciation of the quality of discussion that existed.
for eg, if you browse through the early usenet discussions, you can read the ir-arr fights as early as 1993 and ir-msv fights much before that. some of the names are very popular now - like ramesh mahadevan whose humorous articles in the usenet groups are very famous now.
