i was listening to jog raaga in gireesan's site. 'kavidhai kelungal' from punnagai mannan closely resembles this raaga. is the song in jog or naatai-based ?

Another song which could be mistaken for Desh but which is (i think) based on kApi is "kaadhal rojaave enge nee enge" from the film Roja.

dear chandrasekharan, It is surely not in Hindholam, but i think it is a mix of Sudhdha dhanyasi and Aabheri with a lot of Anya swarams.

A wonderful collection at your site. I am at a loss of words for appreciation. i have a doubt. Is "Manasukkul Utkarndhu Maniyadithai" from "Kalyana Agathigal" is in same raga - Saranga as that of "Kadhalil" in your site (Rare ragas of Raja)?

Murali,

manasukkuL is in Hamir Kalyani, whereas kAdhalil is in Saranga. Though both are rakthi ragas, i.e they have typical swara patterns that make them very easy to identify, both are derivatives of Mechakalyani and *CAN* confuse newbies :-)

It seems that "malrgalae Malargale " (Love birds) by ARR is in Saraswati. Can any body explain the aarohanam,avarohanm and list the songs present in TFM in that Raga ?

In 'Malargale' song, I think the singer touches GA at 'Vinnodum Neethan' (GA RI SA... VI NN ODUM). May be it is not purely Saraswati but a hybrid raga.

Hi,
Does the song Malargale have also traces of Saranga in it?I think only the orchestration has Saraswathi in it.Incidentally , it is one of the very few times,ARR has fully used M2 in a song.

During the rediff Chat with ARR, I mentioned this song, and we his reply also implicated that the MALARGALE song was a Hybrid of SARASWATHI and HAMIR KALYANI(Hrishi, it's very close sounding to Saranga)......I asked him about why he chose Saraswathi and Hamir Kalyani in the song and he didn't dispute the Ragas, but said that they are not normally used, so he chose to blend them for a change.....

Yesterday I was trying 'Arisi kutthum akka mahale' from Man Vaasanai. Looks like it is based on sudhdha sAvEri (S R2 M1 P D2 S). Sounds good to me. Anybody confirm please ?

I have a question about choosing the raga for a film song...

(I am using the s r1 r2 g1 g2 m1 m2 d1 d2 n1 n2 S R1 notations.)

I traced out the notes for a particular film song. The notes
are..

pallavi:

r1 m2.. d1m2g1r1
r1r1 m2.. m2d1d1n1
n1n1R1 G1G1R1n2
n2n1n1d1 R1R1 n1m2

charanam:

G1.. n2R1G1R1
m2m2G1.. n2R1G1R1
repeat the above 2 lines
M1G1R1R1
G1R1n2n1
and 2 more lines I did not trace.

My question is:

If I want to determine if this song is in some raga (or not)
how do I go about doing that?

It is in neither of the two. You may call it sankarabaranam if you like to find a ragam in that song.
