I have just bought a book titled, "nAd - Understanding
Raga Music", by Sandeep Bagchee. 1998, published by
Eeshwar, 229 A Krantiveer Rajguru Marg,
Giragaon, Mumbai - 400 004. The book has
382 pages and costs Rs. 395.
It is a book about Hindustani muzic. "It is aimed
at the serious listener, that is someone who may not have
had any formal lessons himself in the performing
art, but who, nevertheless, has picked up an
initial interest in listening to classical music,
and is therefore, seeking to know more about its
underlying structure, system and traditions".
On browsing carefully over the book, I find it
to be excellent, especially for beginners like me.
At the same time it is sufficiently detailed to
attract an expert also. Its careful description of
raagas and raaga swaroopaas
is particularly attractive. Detailed analysis of
some important raagaas are given to help a
beginner see what he/she should look for when
identifying those raagaas. The book suggests
appropriate audio tapes that will help the
appreciation/understanding of various raagaas.
The book has been put together very
professionally (unlike the typical books on
Indian Music published in India).

Reva: Thanks for the information. I shall definitely keep a look out for this book. Does it also delve into any film songs?
There are some TFM songs which elude me, as they seem to be based on Rare Hindustani Ragas(maybe rare to me, as I don't know much Hindustani music). There are Ragas that are Janyas of Kamaj Thaat (Harikamboji) and the Kaafi Thaat (Karaharapriya), but the actual Ragams remain a mystery to me. Here are some examples of songs like that:
'Meghame Meghame' from Paalavana Cholai
'Vaana Malai Pole Pudhu Paadalgal' by KJJ - Idhu Namma Bhoomi
'Kootathile Kovil Pura' - Mohan *rer
'Uyirum neeye' - Pavithra, Unnikrishnan - Sounds like KamaaJ
'Sakhiye neethaan thunaiye' - Andhimandhaarai - Unnikrishnan, I think this is a safe KamaaS.
'Oru Naal Oru Polzuthum' - Andhimanthaarai, sounds like Natakurinji - So far, I believe that no one has found the equivalent Hindustani Ragam for this.
Any help with these will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is a book called "Ragapravaham" recommended for students pursuing a degree in music in India. There is not much of theory in it but is organised in a fashion as to easily track down Mela Karthaas and their Janyams. It also has a table of Carnatic Raagas and their Hindustani counterparts. It can be procured at 'Giri trading agencies"...the shop that is close to Kabali Kovil in Madras.

Has anybody had a look at the carnatic cd-rom produced by Sowmya ?
Is it worth buying ?

Sriram: I will also recommend "Raga Pravaham", as it's my main source of information for Carnatic Music. It's the best Raga book I have come across; it's very well presented and easy to reference. I would also recommend Saambamoorthy's Theory books - I-VI.....These are the text books we use to learn theoretical concepts and are excellent - My Father is totally self-taught from these books and he can catch Ragams very easily. Are there any other books you know of for theory, that you can recommend?
pg: Please give me more information on this. Where can I get it? Is it a CD which has a Carnatic program on it, with theory and examples? If so, I'd really like a copy. Thanks for the information.

The Carnatic singer Sowmya and another guy hose name I don't remember produced a cd-rom on carnatic music - sort of like an introduction to carnatic music. I don't remember the name of the cd-rom. This was well reported in TN media.
I am leaving for India today and if I don't end up as shark-feed off Nova Scotia, I shall be back with the cd-rom.

pg: Excellent that you will get hold of this. If there is any other media like this or the Ragam recognition program that we were discussing, please keep a lookout and keep us informed. It's very much appreciated.

Has anybody heard "Ooomai nenjinil sondham idhu oru unmai sollum bandham"? It sounds similar to "Kanmani Nee Vara Kaaththirundhaen". Is it in Malayamarutham?

Geetha,
I tried playing two songs that I know well in your list on my keyboard . "Megame" seems to be Kaafi only not a derivative. "Koottathile" is derivative of Harikambhoji and is called Manohari. The "Carnatic" name for the raga is also Manohari.
- From: Geetha (@ gatekeeper.oracle.co.uk)
on: Tue Sep 8 06:41:11 EDT 1998
Sriram: When you say Meghame is in KAAFI, do you mean the Carnatic KAAFI, or the KAAFI THAAT(Karaharapriya) of Hindustani music?
Thanks for the Manohari - I think this Ragam also has the name Karnataka Kamaas - I believe that the song - Ponnil Vaanam is in this Ragam too, Ramaswamy has said that this song was in Bahudhari, but I feel it is in Manohari......We can check this out in the US.
See you in California.....We can discuss this further.....Thanks for the information....

Please let me know in what raga is the song "Un paarvaiyil Oarayiram Kavidhai Naan" from "Amman Kovil Kizhakkalae" in? The swara prayoga and the thala seem to be too hindustani.
- From: Sankaran (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Sat Sep 12 03:20:33 EDT 1998
I think "Un paarvayil..." is based on Hindustani raag yaman(equivalent of Carnatic Kalyani) or some variant of it. I'm not 100% sure of this. Nice if someone clarifies this

Murali & Sankaran,
This song is a toughie, it does have character of Kalyani. There are lots of foreign notes creeping in though.

I have a hobby of collecting IR songs collections for the last about 10 years. I have about
100 cassettes of IR music exclusively recorded.
Those who listen to them would really enjoy his
oldies, but recording quality is not that much
good compared to latest CD recordings.
Yours sincere folk

Murali shankar,
i think "idhu kuzhandai pAdum thAlAttu" is based on kApi.

i would always take kApi and dEsh one for the other. i firmly believe that there should be some similarity in the swaras for those ragas.
