Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us.   "quality deteriorated rapidly" - to be correct, it just "disappeared" after Mythili Ennai Kaathali (this movie had the song "Salaangai Ettaal Oru Maadhu" - sung by SPB, right ?)

  OSIG: I think all of TRs movies sucked big time for his immature/improper ( is there any other suitable word) directing skills. I watched Oru Thalai Raagam, Vasantha AzhaippugaL, Rayil PayanangaLil few months back and kept wondering how could have these movies been hits.
  
  But like Sabesan pointed out, his lyrics/music stood of the crowd till Mythili Ennai Kaathali.

  So, you don't like any of TR's lyrics? I guess we differ in our lyrical standards. I would take T.R. or Kaalimuthu's karuvaadu meenaagaathu over "olive ennai" or "oxygen" in songs. "Kuzhal Kattai" could just have been "kuzhal kaththai" messed up by Jeyachandran. But if we pick on lyrics this much, I can ask for the meaning of VM's "Jingala jingaa jeeboombaa jingalajingaa" or Kannadhaasan's "kingini thandugal kavipaada".
  
  Sidebar: I've heard Kaalimuthu at a kaviyarangam, if we're talking about the same Kaalimuthu the ex-minister, the man knew his Thamizh. He did an adukku kavidhai for nearly 10 minutes and brought the roof down in that kaviyarangam.
  
  About A.A. Raj's contribution. At least a case can be made for Ramamurthy's contribution in Viswanathan-Ramamurthy, since Ramamurthy did about 40 movies on his own. A.A.Raj did one movie by himself for E.M.Ibrahim with one forgivable song. Why didn't he do more? Whereas T.R. did enough other movies that were along the lines of "Oru Thalai Raagam".

  I'm no defender of TR's movies, but since you equate immature/improper movies and hits just look at "Baba" or a random movie by Vijay and I rest my case. Oru Thalai Raagam is dated, but I would gladly sit through it over most movies today, BTW, E.M. Ibrahim supposedly directed this movie while I suspect Robert-Rajasekhar, listed as cinematographers, had a lot to do with it.

  Udhaya, I am glad you find ‘Poovey nee yaar solli yaarukkaga malargindraai’ forgivable- for it is among my all time favourite songs : ))
  
  Btw 1: AA Raj is a veteran in tfm- he has assisted stalwarts like Master Venu, Chalapathi Rao and V Dakshinamoorthi. I believe he has also composed music for a few Telugu films. Apart from Thaniyaadha Dhaagam, AA Raj composed music for a film called Udhayamagirathu. While ‘Avanukkendrey vandhaal azhagu Radhai, azhagu sindhum poonkodi Kothai’ by VJ is a dainty number, I wish you would listen to SPB’s ‘Kanna un arulaal yaavum iyangum, kanavugal nanavaaga thunai purivaayey, karunaiyin thaaye en Kanna’- this song shows that had some more films come AA Raj’s way, we would have thought more of him. A great semi-classical song, with surprising progressions and cascading interludes, with SPB going all out to add splendour to this small time musician’s imagination. His variations in‘Alai kadal un palli ananda saaram’ and ‘Puruvangal un villaga poonkuzhal aada’ is something that thrills me each time I hear the song. Kannadasan enjoys singing paeans to his favourite Deity in poetic lyrics- This one song will surely convince you of AR Raj’s capabilities. (Not meaning to belittle TR in any way!)
  
  Btw 2: Kalimuthu is now the Speaker of the illustrious TN Assembly, and he is bringing the house down with his rulings!
  
  I enjoyed TR’s lyrics and music in two other songs too- both are songs of unrequited love and glitter with grief -One from Ragam Thedum Pallavi- ‘Aazhk kadalil thathalithu naan edutha muthu ondrai vidhiyavan parithathu yen—yen, urchavathu silai idhan poocharamum udhirndhadhu, poojaiadhum kalaindhadhu, yen—yen’ -‘En manadhil paalaivanamaanen, mani vizhiyil sogakkadalaanen’- touching irony!
  The other one is by KJY- from the film Unakkaga Oru Roja – ‘Oru Pullankuzhal oomai aanadhu, oru poovin manam kaayam aanadhu’- sugamaana sogam!
  
  Those who feel TR didn’t give any good songs after Maithili Ennai Kaadhali- I wish to remind you of ‘Maalai ennai vaatudhu’ and ‘Kaadhal oorvalam ingey’-Pookalai Parikaatheergal, ‘Kuthu vilakkaga kulamagalaaga’-Koolikkaaran, ‘Vanjiyidam nanjamadhai thandhuvitten’ -Ivargal Varunkaala Thoongal, ‘Kathiravanai paarthu kaalai vidum thoodhu’-Pookal Vidum Thoodhu---

  TR might have done a world of good for himself (and for the rest of us) just by restricting himself to lyrics and being an asst. dir to a good music director.
  
  I can throw some of my outsiders inside views on TRajendar, et al. I know the pair Robert-Rajasekar. But I would not give sole credit for oruthalai raagam to them - it was a team effort (TR, R-R doing most of the good). Ibrahim was on the sets holding cash in his "Nagai MuRa Silks" - yellow bag. R-R went on to give another all time hit paalaivanach chOlai. (for which my brother was a proxy distribution manage for Thanjavur-Trichy-Pudukkottai while he was in his college. His maths and tamil prof. in kumbakonam were the financiers - made a fortune. I know several insiders stories about this group, their dreams and their bitter rivalry after a couple of hits.
  
  But, what I regret till date is this; Rajasekar gave my brother two three hours long cassettes of the entire composing sessions of kaNNE kalaimAnE (mUndrAmpiRai) and pU nadamida (tik, tik, tik) that had several interesting conversations - illayaraja, kannadasan, VM, Yesudoss, TVG, BaluMahendra, Bharathiraja and yes - believe me - SPB who was initially expected to sing kaNNE...!!! My brother lost it and I will never forgive him.

  TR-Jeppiar connection is another interesting story. MGR try to groom him - but TR did not budge to some of MGR's preconditions. TR - just to show that he can survive opposing MGR joined DMK.
  
  MGR had to recruit Bhaagyaraj in haste. Eventually both of them were big time political failures. Stories continue with different actors in this soap opera - vijayakanth, sharathkumar, Rajini.
  
  Ramarajan managed to become MP and entered parliament with the laptop gifted by amma :))

  I have heard that while TR composed the tunes the arrangements were mostly taken care of by the instrumentalists, not sure how far it is true.

  It is very fashionable to criticize TR.But fact is he is capable of giving much more. Had he stuck just to lyrics & music he would have surely established a permanent place in TFM. But we are confused with the garish sets, the adocious dialogues, the cranky camera angles that our judgement of TR's musical abilities gets clouded.
  My favourite song is the SPB solo" Moongilile paatisaikkum katralayai toothu.." from Raagam thedum Pallavi.
  it has a nice lilting feel & it rolls nicely on the lips.

  - Folks, listen to this song. I have no idea which movie this is from, who the female singer is (MLV??), or who the music director is. The male singer seems to be A.M.Raja, or can be Ghantasala.
  
  - The song is unique in that there is only one instrument used, the Guitar!! There is no percussion, and there are no other instruments. It has a waltzy touch and flows very well. I've been listening to this continuously today and am hooked.
  
  - I searched on this song in newtfmpage, cannot find any mention of this song. Manisegaran mentions a "vaanil nilavile" from Jameendar, not sure if that is this song.

  Are u sure that Ibrahim owned ManjaL Pai-Mu.Ra sons(my dad worked for a bank in Nagapattinam in 1970s and at the end of holidays Javuli edukkumidam!Old times..).He was actually into racing,owning a few race horses and I believe he is from Mayavaram .I think "Thaniyatha Dhagam" and "Udhayamagirathu" brought him down from the high horse of his!But he stuck to Raj and that could be a clue.
  Robert-Rajasekar must have had a big hand in OTR,so was AA Raj with its music.That duo were better in most of their subsequent ventures.OTR despite certain drawbacks was a milestone,trendsetter,no doubt.But you watch any TR movie yo will find the subtlety missing in comparison.

  i second udhaya's opinion regarding TR and kaaLimuththu. one's political inclination shouldn't become a measuring gauge for one's literary knowledge.
  
  btw, bb r u talking about the gemini, m.r.raadha starrer zameendaar? Sorry! I don't remember "vaanil nilavile" song mentioned by Manisegaran. However this film has beautiful "sondhamumillae bandhamumillae sonnaidaththil amarndhukoLkiraar; naanga mannarumillae oru mandhiriyillae vaNakkam pOttu thalayaichchaikkiraar", what a splendid intro to m.r.raadha, can this song be a SOTD, a day?
