Song of the Day: thaalaattudhE vaanam from kadal meengaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thalattudhe.rm
- Sung by Jayachandran and Janaki. MD is Ilayaraja. The film stars Kamalhaasan in a double role, romancing with Sujatha in this song. Somehow, it looks to me as though Jayachandran's voice fits Kamal's perfectly, especially when JC sings the charanams of this song. The song will keep bringing us images of two lovers on a boat at sunset.
- Lyrics in our TFSA page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/tfsa/tamil/songs/kadameen.htm
- The song has been looked at in our Lyrics writing thread, where people provide alternate lyrics for well-known songs: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/7768.5517.16.38.22.html

Kadal Meengal Had Good Songs
1. Thaalatuthey by PJ & SJ
2. Maane oru mangala by PS are Famous too
Thaalatudhey .. Excellent Song by Vaali . PJ in his interview Praised IR for such a Classy tune.
Kamal-Sujatha 2 talented People - No need to Mention about them
PJ For kamal is a different Try by IR though MSV had Tried already in Moondru Mudichu..
Thanks For this Excellent Number
Oru Vaanavil Pole (from Kaatrinil Varum Geetham) is in Par with this song in BGM, interludes etc.

Thallatuthey vaanam was written by kannadasan. Not vaali. I like Jayachandran's voice a lot in this song. No need to mention about Janaki. Excellent performance. I wish IR could have used this combination in more songs.

Wow!!! What a superb melody in Mohanam!!!
The lead singers SJ,PJ have sung in perfect harmony and bliss. Gives a feeling of a boat sailing into deep, blue waters. What is the instrument used in the later part of second interlude? Nice flute pieces too.'Enrenrum Aanandame' is another good number.

Great vintage IR. The opening flute itself paints a tropical landscape whose atmosphere is furthered by the rich interludes. If it's Arunmozhi's flute he deserves some praise. The rewritten and re-recorded (the original lyrics were too risque for radio play) "Mayilae Mayilae Machaan Illayae" is also a delightful themmangu duet, the kind we rarely hear these days.

There was one more song - "Engengum Anandhamaeey.... Ennangaaal AIyaramaeeeyy", by SPB or was it MV ? But pick of the album was "Thalatudhey..."

Sabesan, endrendum aanadhamey by MV is a classic in my books :-) You have to just wonder at the choice of scale/interludes for a typical dance-song. I recommend that you dont see the picturization of it :-)
As Udhaya and others have noted "Thalatudhe vaanam" is one of those IR songs that strongly evokes different kinds of visual imagery. Although I hapened to see the picturization much later when I heard this for the first time back in the early 80s the song really painted the dusk/sea picture with the fisherman's humming in the chorus. Mythila, I dont think it is fully in Mohanam, probably just portions of it. In the charanams it clearly strays away from the scale.
Jayachandran should have sung a lot of the IR/Mano/Arunmozhi songs in the later 80s. Unfortunately he somehow got underused.

sabesan,
The Madhuni and Kozhundha references were replaced by Mayilae and Kumara for radio play, at least for Chennai vanoli. I'm not sure about the other stations.

Udhaya, I remember hearing in Ceylon (or was it some other local Cbe, trichy channels?) the "madhini" version. Man, if that lyrics was bad, wonder how come the censor and others accepted the "Samanjadhu eppadi", and lot of other junks coming these days. Hmm, I remember the ban on "Orampppooo". Ha! what a joke.
Yes Vijay, MV sang the "Endrendum" perfectly well. For a min i thought it was SPB, when it starts.
About JC, I thought he was going to be used continuously after the grand success of Vaidhegi Kaathirundal.

No clue BB. But there was an "unwritten" ban on this song in our AIR's Vividha Barathy (in fact I think AIR did not play lots of IR's songs initially, probably due to the fact it was full of MSV fans!!!!!!. IR should say a BIGGGG thanks to CEYLON radio which played many of his old gems).

It seems the IR fans who took MSV fans place in 1980s in AIR are suspended from service.

Friends,
Those days, some songs (incidentally by IR!), were banned in AIR. While a couple of them deserved it ( by 1977 vintage conservatism!), many didn't. 'ThaNNi karuththiruchchu' and 'maaman oru naaL malligappoo koduththaan' are of the first category as against the innocuous 'OrampO'! The general guess for banning 'OrampO!' was that it could become a deadly catchy phrase for eve teasing/ general rowdyism. But in an interview, AIR ex director (Thooyavan or ThuRaivan, I don't recall) said that it was banned because it had nothing class or cultural in it! Gangai Amaran banged him (rightly so!) in his reply that AIR was refusing to wake up to the ground reality of post May 1976 which witnessed a swarm of talent from rural TN that had arrived ( and how!)on the TF scene!
Those days, AIR used to give a stock reply; 'lOgO binna ruchi' meaning people being what they are, they'll have a wide variety of tastes (implying they can't satisfy everybody!). In practice, it is their choice that was thrust on the hapless public!

Song of the Day: maasil veeNaiyum from Paadhai theriyudhu paar.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maasil.rm
- Saravanan writes on this rare song:
‘Maasil veenaiyum’ from Paathai Theriyuthu Paar. Sung by S Janaki & AS Mahadevan. Music by MB Srinivasan.
Kumari Films’ Paathai Theriyuthu Paar-1960 starred K Vijayan, L Vijayalakshmi, SV Sahasranamam, SV Subbiah, V Gopalakrishnan, Muthiah, SR Janaki, MS Sundaribai & others.
Jayakanthan writes about this film in his ‘Oru Ilakkiyavaathiyin Kalai Ulaga Anubavangal’.Loosely translated, this is what he says:
“A film production company called ‘Kumari Films’ was established by the joint effort of many friends with forward views. Since all of them were either communists or sympathizers of communism, I too was closely connected with them. Comrade MBS was instrumental in the formation of this company. The responsibility of writing the screenplay was given to RK Kannan. The ills that plague society, politics, labor union movement, inflation, share market crash, the intrigues of brokers, black marketeering—the story had a bit of each of these, and for us who strongly believed in the communist cause, this all-encompassing story was immensely satisfying”
Nimai Ghosh took on the twin responsibility of cinematography & direction.
K Vijayan, who was a railway employee, took on the role of the hero. He later acted in a few films ( KB’s Naanal being the most memorable). Starting with Pudhu Vellam-1975, he directed some films. Many of his later films were with Sivaji Ganesan. His son Sundar K Vijayan is a busy chinnathirai director these days- Madisaar Mami, Alaigal, Appa, Kungumam etc. are some of his creations.
PTP was a massive flop, but what makes us remember it is the music of MBS. If PTP has a special place in the hearts of many even to this day, it is solely due to the timeless enchantment of its songs.
Thennangeetru onnjalilae- PBS & SJ ( Lyrics: Jayakanthan)- featured in SOTD earlier.
Maasil veenaiyum- SJ & AS Mahadevan
Unmai orunaal veliyaagum-Trichy Loganathan & Chorus (lyrics: Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram)
Azhutha Kanneerum paalaaguma-PS (lyrics: Jayakanthan)
Chinna china mookuthiyaam-TMS (lyrics: KCS Arunachalam)
Rasa maga polirundhe- ALR & Chorus (lyrics: KCS Arunachalam)

This song featured L Vijayalakshmi and perhaps SV Sahasranamam. This was probably L Vjayalakshmi’s first film in Tamil. She made her debut in the Telugu film Sippaayi Kooturu-1959. She went on to become a popular actress in Telugu. Among her Tamil films, Bommai, Koduthuvaithaval, Sumaithaangi, the series of Modern Theatres’ films (Vallavan Oruvan, Iru Vallavargal, Ethirigal Jaakirathai--), Ooty Varai Uravu etc are worth remembering. She was an accomplished dancer- trained under Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai. She appeared in dance sequences in films like Panjavarnakkili, Mahakavi Kalidas & Kudiyirundha Kovil. Later she married and settled in Philippines, and
subsequently shifted to the U.S. with her family. She is today a qualified CPA and enjoys her job in Virginia!
******
Those were S Janaki’s early years. Her first song was for Vidhiyin Vilayattu, which was never released. Magadalanaattu Mary-1957 was the first film in which SJ was first heard, when she was 19 years old. The song was a duet with PBS- ‘Kannukku nerae minnidum thaarai’- Music: R. Parthasarathi. Some good songs came her way soon. ‘Nilayaaga veesuthe alai polave’-Manamaalai-1958, and ‘Malarodu vilayaadum thendrale vaaraai’-Deivabalam-1959 were the best of her early songs.
It is a matter of ceaseless wonder that SJ, who underwent very little formal training in music, was given so many classical and semi-classical songs in films in all languages, and she did ample justice to all of them. Hark at the light brigas with which she adorns the lines in this song-- It adds so much luster to the fervent traditional lyrics.

There are three pieces ( Maasil veenaiyum, Namachivayave gnanamum kalviyum, Viragil theyinan, always returning to Maasil Veenaiyum) from
Thirunavukkarasar’s Thevaram, that feature in this song.
The story goes that Marul Neekiyar (the real name of Thirunavukkarasar) embraced Jainism in his early youth and became known as ‘Dharmasenar’. His sister, Thilagavathiyar, who was a staunch devotee of Lord Siva, prayed to Him to bring back her brother to His fold. Dharmasenar suddenly developed an acute stomach pain, which the Jain sages could not cure. His sister advised him to pray to Lord Siva. He sang the hymn ‘Kootrayinavaaru vilakkagileer’ and he was cured of his illness. The Lord also gave him the name ‘Thirunavukkarasar’ in praise of his verses. The Jain sages resented his desertion and had King Mahendra Varman punish him.
Thirunavukkarasar came out unscathed from each of these punishments. The King’s men threw him into a burning limekiln and sealed it. It was then that Thirunaavukkarasar sang these lines:
Maasil veenaiyum maalai madhiyamum
Veesu thendralum, veengila venilum
Moosu vandarai poigaiyum pondrathe
Eesan endhai inaiyadi nizhalae
(The shelter under the feet of my Lord is similar to the enchanting music of an unblemished Veenai, the early moon, pleasant breeze, the spring, a lake where the bees are buzzing----)
And when the kiln was opened on the 7th day, Thirunavukkarasar came out unharmed.
*******
‘Maasil veenaiyum’ also featured in Thiruvarutchelvar.( TMS- TL Maharajan)
Thanks to sk for converting this song to mp3 and sending it promptly.
Era. Murukan praises this song thus: “I still remember the passion in SJ's voice when she sings ‘virakil thEyinan, pAlil padu neyyinan—What a wonderful song!”
