Satsona,
Sangathamizh kaviye of Manathil uruthi vendum sounds more like Dhanasri(Hindustani) and not Abheri. Any comments?

Satsona-u'd asked if there's another number in Sumanesa Ranjani-There's 1 in Karthik Raja's grahan.the song is chup chup chup by Asha Bhonsle and Abhijeet. It's great!A very intense song. And there's an album by Priya sisters called "Serene moments".In this, they've sung "Ninnai charaNadainden" in Sumanesa Ranjani.
Beautiful rendering.

Dear Vel,
Talking of new songs and analysing ragas in them is a wasteful exercise. Not worth discussing.Sorry.

R Sundar,
Thanks for more info. on 'Kadalil AlaigaL'. Is it available anywhere on the Net? It'd been ages since I heard this SG-SPB melody.
Yes, the VJ song is a great number. But is it pure Desh?
There's a very beautiful IR song sung by Yesudas, "Theerthak karai ThanilE SheNbaga pushpangaLe". I can't figure out the raga.
It appears to have the following outline:
S R2 G2 P D2 S
S N2 D2 M1 G2 R2 G2 S
Perhaps a Karaharapriya janyam. Can someone identify the raga please?
Thanks

But I feel he makes a better MD than a singer
Definitely not. Though his composition Breathless was beautiful, he is more of a singer and excels in songs like (1) thom karuvil pirandhom (2) thaniye thannanthaniye (3) Breathless -the reprise (4) sandhan thendralai etc.. And I have heard his fusion concerts too. He is simply an mazing singer but has to prove more to be a successful/better MD.
Sumaneesaranjani:
I wonder if there are full length songs in tfm in this beautiful ma counter part of sudhdha dhanyaasi. Two songs with diluted usage of this raga are:
(1) poomaalai oru pavai aaguma
(2) yEdho niniavugaL (start)
Yes..the entire album of grahan is filled with beautiful songs and very good orchestration. chup chup chup is indeed a beautiful song though I would say derived from "poo poo poo, poo pooththa sOlai " by IR. Nachooon jaise is a kaapi number delivered sweetly by Kavitha.
As sindhuja mentioned SR is a shruthibedham of shrothasvini. Some songs in (diluted) shrothasvini are (1) sumam prathi sumam (telugu) (2) Oh vasantha raja - start (3) sindhiya veNmaNi. For a detailed account on shrothasvini, refer back to earlier disccussion given by IR in this thread.

Sindhuja,
Thanks. Do you remember the Yesudas song I am talking about? I think it's from Thai POngal, which also had some excellent numbers like 'kaN malargaLin azhaippidazh' and 'Pani vizhum Poo malare'.
Perhaps it is just Karaharapriya with an interesting prayogam.
Especially the end of charaNam
'kAnal nadhi sugam (S R2 G2 P D2 S) thEdidum nenjangaLe (G R2 S N2 D2 P M1) konja vA.. (S R2 G2)'

MS and others,
What about the song "maanjolai kilidhaano" from kizhakke pogul rayil? is it sumanesa ranjani (or suddha dhanyasi?). I was listening to a jayadeva ashtapadhi song sung by Rajkumar bharathi in sumanesa ranjani, and suddenly reminded by the above film song.

Hey MS, good to hear from you. Good choice of SM songs. His energy level in live concerts is fabulous. His voice control during a live Breathless rendition in a music hall was unbelievable. Was he MD for Dil Chahta Hai?

MS,i'd said chandrakauns is an SB of SumanesaRanjani. Is Shrotaswini the same as chandrakauns? If not,pl. give the Aro,avarO.I remember some time back Vasu(I think)had given details abt. this rAgA and many others similar to this one,but I don't remember.
Sundar Atre, yes,SM along with Ehsan and Loy composed music for Dil Chahta Hai.
i of course agree that SM is an excellent singer,I'm a huge fan of his singing too-his brigas/ghamaks r simply amazing, but I just mean to say that sometimes,Hariharan sounds more pleasant.

Peter Pan,
The song Kadalil alaigal pongum...probably Santhanakrishnan of Tirunindravur must be having it. Ph: 6390124. Again Theerthakaraithaniley is Karnaranjani based. More examples: Ezhisai geethamey by Ravindran (Rasigan oru rasigai)and a IR number in Pannaipurathu pandavargal.
Sindhuja,
Talking of Sumanesa ranjani, why don't you people think of a good song like Orunaal iravu panipol nilavu (kaviyathalaivi), Ethaiyum thanguven anbukkaga (Thangaikkaga) in this raga? Why always talking about Nalamvazha...which is in my opinion is a very very mediocre no. You all did not see me in Naiyandi Dubar when I spoke at length about this raaga on the 27th Feb 2001.

Sindhuja :
Shrothasvini as I remember is a janyam of KheervaNi and has the follopwing set of notes:
S G2 M1 P Ni3 S
S N3 P M1 G2 S
It can be called the Ni3 counterpart of sudhdha dhanyaasi.
Chandra kauns on the other hand is the Ni3 counterpart of Hindholam.
S G2 M1 D1 N3 S
S N3 D1 M1 G2 S
Sumaneesa ranjani is the M2 counterpart of sudhadha dhanyaasi
S G2 M2 P N2 S
S N2 P M2 G2 S
Since sudhadha dhanyaasi and hindholam are shruthi bedhams shrothasvini and chandrakauns are also shruthi bedhams.
Out of these 5 ragas, I know only 3 which have been "purely" used in film music which are hindholam,SD and chandrakouns. Well, listing songs in hindholam and SB is a futile excercise since it would never be complete. For chandrakouns, the best example is the song "veLLichchalangaigaL koNda kalaimagaL" which is a beautiful composition of IR rendered well by SPB. But the song ends in sriranjani. One pure Chandrakouns is the telugu number "aNuvu aNuvula velasina dhEva" - an oldie by SPB. Sounds more like a bhajan.
To get a "feel" for sumaneesa ranjani, listen to these lines:
"yedho ninaivugaL..kanavugaL..manadhile malarudhe" - stop. IMO, SR has hardly been used in pure form or I have not heard any. Some of the SD songs use M2 or N3 for embellishments.
Ragapravaham sundar:
Glad to have you here in newtfmpage. IMO, nalam vaaza is an admixture and would not qualify to be called a song in any particular ragam. It is beautiful composition based on guitar and has wonderful lyrics. Goes down in the list of KJY's personal favorties of SPB.
Sundhar:
MaanjOlai kiLi dhaano is a beautiful compsn predominantly in SD but changes to Karaharapriya in the "minnal Oli enna". One song which could tell you what karaharapriya is all about IMO, is "maadhavi pon mayilaaL". Another song in malayalam sung by KJY is "himashaila soundharyamaai ozugunna shivagangayaay" which is a ragamalika with 3 ragas - neelambari, karaharapriya and kalyaaNa vasantham. A must hear.
A little digression:
sindhuja - Love SM for SM and HH for HH :-) To me KJY,SPB,HH and SM are incomparable to any and each other.
(1) If u need to hear a song without ever having to wonder if the voice or tune is going to be a put off, choose any KJY song and listen. U wont have a problem. one example - chittukku chella chittukku oru siragu muLaiththadhu - a sobre dull song and scores of mallu songs. Ofcourse any cine-classical, opt for KJY.
(2) If u need any song for a particular emotion, choose one from SPB's repoertoire. There are lullabies, romantic numbers, teasers, sad songs and a helleva lot. examples thEne thenpaaNdi meene (lullaby), oru kaadhal dhEvadhai bhoomiyil (romantic number), kELadi en pavaiye (teaser) and theerthakkaraiyinile therku moolaiyil sheNbaga thOttathile (sad song).
(3) Want a chocolatey voice to make you admire all the time about "Man how can somebody sing like this ? Is he human ?" choose a ghazal from HH. two examples are "dard ke rishte" and "shehar dar shehar" from Hazir.
(4) Want vibrance and high pitched notes with crystal clarity in the notes ? Choose one from SM. His thaniye thannan thaniye is a great example.

Sindhuja,
I saw Rudhraveenai yesterday. This week they dealtwith a rare raga called Padharika which resembled Pantuvarali. Have you heard about it?
Enlighten me more on that raga.
