thanx for the info. but can i have the Arohanam and Avarohanam of Sumanesa ranjani?it will be helpful. and regarding usage of keyboard, i think u r referring to the "yen iniya ponnilAve" song, since, in Nalam vAzha, it is mostly guitar, flute and violin used beautifully.

RV,Sundar-me too a huge fan of Shankar Mahadevan!But I feel he makes a better MD than a singer.IMO,his singing lacks some fineness which is there in Hariharan's.An extrrrrreeemely talented singer ,no doubt,but somehow,HH sounds more pleasant to me.
As for his composing,I think he's amazing.NEone's heard "AsmAn ke pAr" from the movie Rockford?(rAg-Tilang/Jog)It's simply superb.Great job by the trio(EhsAn and Loy too).
Small digression-does NEone know some link for the songs from the movie "16 December"?Karthik Raja has done a good job.There's a melodious number by Sadhna Sargam in the rAgam HamsanAdam.

ooops!Satsona,I was referring to the guitar interludes in Nalam vAzha and not the other song.
Sumanesa Ranjani-Sa Ga2 Ma2 Pa Ni2 Sa and same way back.

Dear Peter pan, Your analysis of desh film songs is very interesting. I have heard, reheard, reheard and enjoyed the song Kadalil alaigal pongum... a marvel composed by Shankar-Ganesh for a KSG movie and not Nellikkani. But the song sounds me more of Hindustani raga Thilak Kamod rather than Desh. Anyone knows Thilak Kamod? Remember MSVs Naanendral athu avalum (Suriyagandhi) and Anbu vanthathu ennai..(Sudarum sooravaliyum)and even this Nee oru kadhal(IR, Nayakan). Interesting? Comments please.

The song "Sangathamizh Kaviye" starts with Abheri,goes to abhogi and the second charanam is in Sumanes Ranjani...from whjat I have heard it sounds like close cousin of Samudrapriya(In Hindustani madhukauns)...which I dont see in Marupadiyum song....but SB queen sonna othunduthaan aaganum:-)

Sidhuja,Satsona, Ram...En iniya pon nilave is Natabhairavi + Dha2 if i am not wrong.

Btw, Sindhuja, interesting news about sumanesa ranjani for 'Nalam vazha'.
Refering to Ram's post, i vaguely remember a TV programme long time back that named one single song in 'Marubadiyum' as 'Madhukouns' (ah, i can almost see Ram beaming). Given the fact that we can discount all the other songs of the film Marupadiyum (which are all set in different raga, namely charukesi - Nallathor Veenai seithe, sindhu bhairavi - aasai adhigam vachu, ellorum sollum paatu - sudhadhanyasi, ellorum solum paatu - sarasaangi...hope i am not wrong in these), the only song that remains that could have been named as Madhukouns could be 'nalam vaazha ennalum'...hmm, what do you think?

I am going to have a lovely time with keyboard tonite anyway ;-). Thanks satsona for bringing up this song.

btw, listened to a song called 'oru pooveduthu vaikanum thannala' from the film 'naanum oru thozhilaali'..(Kamal, Ambika starrer)...lovely SIVARANJANI (from IR as usual, of course) :-)

Madhukauns/Samudrapriya/Sumanesa Ranjani are all closely related ragas (Infact isn't Samudrapriya = Sumanesa Ranjani?)

Having said that, I feel that Nalam vaazha is based on all of the above with additional notes - dha2 Ri2 - which are not found in any of these ragas - I am not able to think of a raga with these combination of notes !!! Sa ga2 Mi2 pa Ni2 Sa Ni2 (dha2) pa Ma2 Ga2 (Ri2) Sa (and an occasional Ni3). This is just IMO :-) _ I have always felt that this song sounds like "Vaa vaa anbee - kaadhal"(eeramaana Rojave?) - need to listen to that song to see if it has similar notes.

Chara/madhukauns are definitely different...Chandrakauns is more like Kalyanavasantam(enakku swaram ellam out of portion...so IR-E thanjam:-)..0

Ram,i'm dead sure abt. how chandrakauns goes-it is the Ni variant of HindOlam.I haven't heard of this rAga madhukauns though.

So,Madhukauns is very similar to Sumanesa Ranjani.And chandrakauns happens to be an SB of Sumanesa Ranjani. :-)

Sindhuja - u r right about Chandrakauns - it is Ni3 version of HindoLam

There is a lovely meera bhajan in Madhukauns - KrishNa karo Bhajamana Prabhu thuma... It is the (vakra version of) M2 version of Sudhdha Dhanyasi. (Sa Ga2 Mi2 Pa Ni2 pa sa - Sa Ni2 Pa Ma2 Ga2 sa) -There is also another version of Madhukauns without the vakra prayoham which would make it your favorite Sumanesa Ranjani :-)

Ram,IR_Fam,Satsona,others,I didn't know abt. Madhukauns till today,and thus said that nalam vazha is in Sumanesa Ranjani(SR).Now that I know there is an SR with Da,called Madhukauns,I guess now even I think that this song is in Madhukauns. :-)

Sindhuja - Thanks for the link - awesome collection of hindustani ragas - they have also given 2 different versions - one with dha and one without dha :-) But the imported version of Madhukauns in CM, I believe, excludes the dha note.

Talking of Desh, how can you forget the scintillating Vani Jayaram Kunnakudy number from Melnattu Marumagal - Muthamizhil paada vanthen...KVM's Ondra irandha eduthu solla (Selvam)...the list goes. How is it?
