Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

AV, it was a surprise to many, (including perhaps VJ herself) when the award for announced for 'en kalyana vaibOgam', as 'naanE naana' was the bigger hit! Both are wonderful songs. Sure, I'll try to translate the lyrics when we come to 'en kalyana vaibOgam'.
'kahaan se aaye'- isn't it the song in which Deepti Naval would suddenly break down in the course of her music lesson? Saw the film long back. Sai Paranjpye?
RR, thanks! Will try to bring the next part soon :)

"Sugam Sugam " sounds MSV ish and is set to Dharmavathy. Pity ARR has abandoned the old fashioned style and decided to cater largely to MTV genre

after the two songs that have been eloquently written saravanan may be I'll list VJ under L ;-)
KJY was at his melodious best. Yes Thirusoolam did not deserve to be a hit . But Sivaji had so much of goodwill left - notwithstanding OISG who probably was too young to count anyway -- that the whole of Tamil Nadu queued up in hordes to see the film. I had sripriya so it was fun. Of course you had to endure operator extension please ion the long distance "malar koduthen" sivaji or was it KR Vijaya catching a train with a steam locomotive at egmore to go to Delhi! But who cared it was celebration time all right and all was forgiven including Guru's outrageous wig!
of course Sivaji would have been better than Raj Kumar & AB!

Saravanan: Yes, "kahaan se aaye" is the song in which Deepti Naval suddenly breaks down. The part subg by yesudas is picturised on her music teacher. The movie is directed by Sai Paranjape and it is a really pleasant movie.

TamilRoja, the website has a lot of VJ songs from the 80s. I am sure Neel will be adding some more soon.
Neel, I was looking at some songs under 'More Tamil'.
paalukku aadai is from Rajarajeswari. The male voice is Jolly Abraham.
The male voice in vaasam sindhum vaNNachOlai is Mano.
Talking of Mano, do you have the racy Mnao/VJ duet from kaliyungam, the one that goes 'vayasukku vaNakkam'?

Saravanan, thanks for those movie names. I think I have a poor quality recording of vayadhukku vanakkam. I will upload it some time soon.
In the next day or two I wii upload a Carnatic album on Murugan. Music and Lyrics by VJ.

Saravanan -
Yesterday's featured SOTD sent me blissfully into a TFM 80s redux. The best thing about this place (besides your literary/archivist efforts) are these journeys into memory, navigated by the melodic thread of a song.
Ninaiththaal prompted many forgotten - and deliciously rediscovered - Ninaivugal all day.
Here are some of the songs that shone again:
Rasaththi Rosappoove Vetkam Vetkam Yaeno Innum
Abishekam Alankaaram Archchanai Arambam (The sub-loop :-) when I was listening to this was the recognition for the first time that this was indeed SGs version of Andhi Mazhai - the components of the song - breakaway / overlapping aalaaps, the primal percussion, the synthetic violins...not to mention that Marumagale Vazhga was circa Raaja Paarvai?)
En Raadhaiye - Another lost lilt by VJ-KJY. Premapasam, I believe.
Sela Kodapidikka Kaathu Sillunnu Veesudhadi - The arrangement of this one takes you on a detour all its own. VJ-SPB...like georgette and sequins! :-)
Thodalaam Thottaalum Yogam Thaan - I've written about this one in the past. So unadorned, and still how it sparkles!
Thottukkattiya Maappillai - The sweep of this composition always delights. The lyrics reveal newer nuances on every listening - as do the voices!
Geetham Vandhadhu Sangeetham Vandhadhu & Manmadhan Thaan Vitta Ambu - VJ-MVD.
I also thought of Mudhul Murai Thoduvadhu Sugam, but, alas, that one is still a bit of a maaya maan!

Naaz, Mudhal Murai Thoduvadhu Sugam, enna padam?
When I was in India two months ago, I happened to catch the song sequence of VJ's first Tamil film song "Or idam unnidam". The movie was playing on some channel but when I walked into the room it was the song. That was a pleasant surprise. It looked like Ravichandran and Lata on a boat. Saravanan has already written that it is AVM Rajan. So it has to be him. Of course Rajan and Ravichandran both were very handsome but never made it big. With a typical 70s hairdo and costumes all women I can't recognize look like Lata to me. So, I got that one right.
Anyway, back to VJ. I have uploaded the Murugan Paadalgal album. Music and Lyrics by VJ herself. It was taken from an old tape, the audio quality is not that great.

Naaz, all the songs you have mentioned are wonderful ones, and never did get a fair share of airtime. In the case of the lovely 'rasathi rosaapoove' of course, it was overshadowed by 'naan paadi konde iruppen'!
Neel- that one is from dhooram adhigam illai, which had some amazing VJ solos too- 'jothiye unai thediye' and 'ilam kuyilin ilaya ragam'.
Many thanks for the Murugan songs! VJ gifted me that divine cassette. What an awesome album!

1979- Part 6
Let us take up some more VJ-MSV collaborations in this part of the 1979 diary…
194. rajaathi kungumam- mangaLa vaadhiyam- SPB
Sarigamapadhanee Films’ magaLa vaadhiyam was MSV’s own production, directed by K.Shankar. The film starred Kamalhasan, Sripriya, Kanthimathi, V.K.R, Srikanth, Nagesh, YGM and others. A clichéd story of a mother-in-law/ daughter-in-law standoff, with the stammering Kamal in between, the film was a massive flop. Strangely enough, MSV’s score, and that too for his own film, was largely disappointing, despite Kannadasan’s lyrics.
veLLaikkakka mallakka paRakkudhu- TMS
vaNdina vaNdithaan- SPB
sorgam therigiRadhu- SJ
thuLLi varum kaaLai- MV/SJ
rajaathi kungumam- SPB/VJ
And save ‘raajaathi kungumam’, no other song is worth recollecting today. ‘rajaathi kungumam’, a dream song filmed on Kamal and Sripriya is a dainty duet. And notwithstanding the film biting the dust, this song was popular in its time.
rajaathi kungumam singaram
rajavin pakkathil sringaram
aaramba ragam, adhisaya mELam
anandam paadum mangaLa vaadhiyam--
A grand prelude, nadhaswaram being employed imaginatively in the interlude to suit the title, and VJ entering with ‘mannanavn madiyE simmasanam’….
http://in.f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/sarva1511/vwp2?.tok=bcH1vtTBA.RvO8_t&.dir=/&.dnm=rajathi.mp3&.src=bc
I am sorry I have only a truncated version of this song; I vaguely recall the song being a longish one, with changes in tempo and style as part of its progression.
195. ‘idhu irava pagala’- neela malargaL- KJY
Sabari Cines’ neela malargaL starred Kamalhasan, Sridevi, K.R.Vijaya, Major Sundararajan, Nagesh and others. It was directed by the veteran duo Krishnan-Panju.
neela malargaL was the Tamil adaptation of Shakthi Samanta’s Hindi film Anuraag (1972/ Shakthi films). Anuraag starred Vinod Mehra, Moushmi Chatterjee, Nutan and Ashok Kumar. The story revolved around a small boy who wins everyone’s heart with his good nature, and is suddenly diagnosed with cancer. The heart-rending sequences in the aftermath of this discovery, leading to the inevitable end fill rest of the reels.
MSV and Kannadasan came up with some good songs for neela malargaL:
pEsum maNi muthu rOjakkaL- SPB & chorus
maadham oru poo malarum (happy & pathos versions)- PS
angatha naattil vaazhndhirundhaaLE- SJ
idhu iravaa pagalaa- KJY/VJ
Kamal played a young doctor, and Sridevi, a blind artisan, whom Kamal falls in love with. (Of course, in the end, Sridevi gets back her vision, thanks to the little boy whose dying wish was that his eyes be donated to her!)
This song is memorable duet, sung wonderfully by KJY & VJ. The Hindi equivalent is the Rafi/Lata duet ‘tere nainon ke main deep jalaoonga’ (woh kya hai? ek mandir hai!)
idhu iravaa pagalaa?
nee nilavaa kathiraa?
Idhu vanamma maaLigaiyaa?
nee malaraa Oviyamaa?
Unable to see, she asks him various questions, to which he responds with love-filled counter-questions! To cap it all, when she queries’ ingu kiLi thaan azhagaa?’, he declares unhesiatatingly, ‘un azhgE azhagu!’
Lilting interludes, charanams that flow so beautifully…the mellisai mannar in his elements here…
(Duets 3, Page 1 at vanijairam.com)
196. naan ramanaippOloru avathaaram- aasaikku vayasillai- JC
I have tried in vain to get information about Shanmugam Cine Enterprises’ aasaikku vayasillai. I have not seen the film or even its songs on TV. I have heard that Muthuraman played a middle-aged married man who suddenly falls for a younger woman. Hope someone can give more details.
The songs however, were popular and were often heard on radio.
aasaikku vayasillai adhai adaikkiya manasillai- MSV/L.R.Anjalai & chorus
naan ramanaippOloru avathaaram- JC/VJ
mambalathu poosari dabaikkiraanya- Manorama/Udhayanan
kuzhaloodhum kaNNan- VJ
In ‘naan ramanaippOlru avathaaram’, he proclaims his steadfast loyalty to his wife, who in turn reciprocates with affection:
naan ramanaippOloru avathaaram
avanpOl enakkum oru thaaram
ennai aaLvadhundhan adhigaaram
anbE..nee en aadhaaram
A mellifluous, semi-classical composition. JC and VJ, once again, do full justice to the song; hark at their enticing humming that leads back to the pallavi.
(Duets 1, Page 1 at vanijairam.com)
197. kuzhaloodhum kaNNan- aasaikku vayasillai
A bewitching VJ solo from the same film:
kuzhaloodhum kaNNan..
mazhaimEga vaNNan..
enai chErum veLai..
ennenna leelai!
kadal koNda neelam
udal koNda mannan
idhazh koNda thEnai
eduthaaLa vandhaan…
An unforgettable instance of VJ’s consummate artistry….the soulful beginning of the charanam ‘neela nilavil neelambariyil’… the slight tremor as she sings
‘aNaithida vandhaan thudithEnE’…'the ache of love that is evident in ‘kodhithidum mEni’….evocative moments to be treasured and savoured..
