  Has any body listened 2 the song "Neela Vaanam Thooramillai" from En Iniya Kadhalargale, it is song By SPB + Unni Krishnan, it is a Prashanth film.

  Raghuvara....what do you mean by flaring of the voice? Could you clarify please? Also you mention SPB hitting the 37th note in Anjali Anjali. What note would that be in the western notation? I played it on my keyboard and it seems to be an upper F or F# (of course all depends on what scale you are playing on to begin with)

  I dont think its right on your part to say that SPB screams in Roja or some other song. I think this should'nt draw to some wrong remark at someone who has'nt done any wrong to any of us.
  
  I and we all regard Rafi as a great singer but you just seem to stick to your point saying Rafi is the greatest singer, well thats your opinion and so are the other folks here who consider SPB as the greatest singer.
  
  Voice is God's gift and neither of us has the right to discriminate it. It's just way it is rendered that should be appreciated. Regardless of bass, octaves or whatever SPB is defintely the best.
  
  Ali, you have mentioned that SPB is a great singer and then you have said he screams and then went on to praise him in some of his songs.
  
  Here is the list of songs in which SPB sings flawlessly :
  
  1. Sangeetha Jathimulai (Kadhal Oviyam)
  2. Idhayam Oru Koil (idhaya koil)
  3. Van uyardha.. (idhaya koil)
  4. Thenney then pandi neney (Udhaya geetham)
  5. Nilavey vaa (Mouna Ragam)
  6. Mandram vanda... (Mouna Ragam)
  7. Ena satham indha neera (Pungai Mannan)
  8. Kadhal Rojavey (Roja)
  9. En Kadhaley en kadhaley (Roja)
  10. Minnaley... (May Madham )
  11. Anbey Anbey (Kadhal Desam)
  12. Thagai thamrai magaley (Minsara Kanavu)
  13. Mun paniya (Nandhaa)
  
  Raghu had also mentioned 1 songs frm T.Raj.. music, which is also v.well sung by SPB. I have had a chance to hear him live on a show and also some other songs mentioned above.
  
  If these songs dont impress you then I dont think its worth trying to explain you why SPB is defintely the all time greatest singer.
  
  I hope to get responses from the other folks too.

  Mano or other singers who have followed SPB can probably attest to this: But it is definitely easier to sing most Rafi songs than countless number of extremely challenging SPB songs.. Well of course one can sing it, but not if one wants to match the flawless voice that SPB preserves over wide ranges...
  
  A good example if one is interested is to listen back to back to the Tamil and Telugu versions of Oh Pappa Lali, Oh Priya Priya and other songs from the movie Idhayathai Thirudathe (Gitanjali in Telugu). Mano sings in Tamil and SPB in Telugu. One has to listen to appreciate the incredible superiority and melody of SPB's voice.. In fact I cannot imagine how Raaja would have let this slip thru: The Alabanam for Oh Priya Priya (Tamil version) is SPB's voice and then Mano starts the song...It is quite a glaring contrast...almost jarring if you have listened to the Telugu version..
  
  Comment to ARR: SPB did sing one full verse of Chaudhve Ka Chand at a function honoring his 30 Years in music .. I have the CD. It is impeccable. He can sing any Rafi song effortlessly. Rafi can sing most SPB songs effortlessly, but will surely struggle in several.
  
  SPB is the only singer in India confident enough and assured enough of his own talent that he is willing to sing songs sung by other singers, and risk adverse comments.
  
  Comment to Raghuvaran: Agree with everything u write.... But I am 100% sure that En Kadhali is KJY not Jeyachandran. I heard it again at Dhool yesterday. If some web site says Jeyachandran sang it , then its wrong. This is one song Ive no doubt. The song is so old that we may need SPB or KJY to answer this one!

  Your comments on rafi struggling are very poor. Even though SPB maybe the greatest, the diff. between him and Rafi interms of singing is miniscule, and not infinite as u are trying to portray.
  
  Also, if u mean to say that anyone can sing Rafis songs easily, see what has happened to a few gems when they were re-sung by sonu nigam for TSERIES!

  here are a few SPB special;
  
  1) Shankaraparanam, I can not Imagine Rafi or anyone including the Carantic legends like KJY, Bala Murali Krishna, Ghantasala, doing any justice to these songs, perhaps they can sing it flawlessly but they would not be able to get that voice of SPB, SPB shows in all his songs great depth, bass & modulate well, his voice suited the character in Shankaraparanam so well, people who do not know SPB, will not believe it is coming a novice to carnatic music.
  
  2) No body sings Romantic songs like SPB, he sings as though he has fallen in love with the woman himself.
  
  here are few;

  - Radha Radha nee enge : Meendum Kokila

  - Kadhalin Deepam ondru : Thambikku Endha ooru
  - Ore naal unnai naan nilavil : Izhamai oonjal adukirathu

  ...., gosh I need a whole year to list his songs, I still won't be able to do it!!!

  Ok, perhaps it was SPB+KJY, but it sounded to me like Jeyachandran, I think Jeyachandran was more suitable to Film songs than KJY!

  I didn't mean it in a bad way when I said that SPB looks like he screams in the Roja song. But how do you explain people here saying that Rafi sounds soft or he flares at high pitches. Also what I meant was that I have seen no singer go as easily up to high notes as Rafi. I have listed songs to state my point. If you don't listen to my songs then you won't know why I regard Rafi as the greatest. Voice is a gift from God as you said and we should appreciate how well everyone sings. I didn't mean to offend anyone because I respect every golden great.
  
  One more thing, SPB has said he doesn't even feel like half a singer when he listens to Rafi.

  your SPB comments are vague and subjective. For classical, KJY > SPB > RAFI. Please note that. As far as "spb having a better voice" thats too subjective a thing to be discussed ad nauseum.
  
  Also, dil deewana bin sajanaakE is a MEDIOCRE song.So is "dekha hai pehali baar" and in fact nearly ALL of SPBs Hindi songs. Dont put these amongst his best ones,please.
  
  Also, Rafi's voice does NOT lose control in "Madhuban mein RadhikA naachE rE" AT ALL. Another song where Rafi's classical singing is exhibited is in "saaz ho tum awaaz hun mein" fromSaaz aur Awaaz (music is by Naushad). Its there on MIO. Listen to it. Ye another one is "rAdhikE tunE bansari churai" from Beti Bete.

  Thats right, that song was from Duet.
  
  1 other lovely LOVE song of SPB, Penn alla Penn alla udhapu (Uzhavan), can some one laugh like that at the end of the song.. no one can, except SPB.
  
  Nallam Nallam ariya aval (ajith movie) song is another fantastic song, notice the modulation in the song in each and every word.
  
  Raghu & others, how about setting up a fan club in yahoo some Mr. Observer had suggested.

Tommorow if you become a singer, he would encourage you may be saying that you sing better than SPB. I wouldnt suprised to that, bcos I sort of know him and a lot other pple would say the same about him in the industry. One other thing, he once told in a press interview that he wanted to name his Grandson M.Rafi.

  Any of guys listen to Ena Thalatha varuvala song sung by SPB (orginally by Hariharan), its fantastic. If IRaja hears that he might have taken back his decision of giving it to HH.

  SPB is a class of it's own, a unique entity with no limitations & boundaries, no wonder he is the greatest singer that India had ever produced.

  I don't think SPB would say I sing better than him if I become a singer tommorow. First of all it is unrealistic because he has been singing for over 35 years now and I am just starting. Why make unrealistic comments just to encourage someone ?. You can encourage a person by saying "keep on trying", "practice hard", not "you are better than me" or "You are the best singer ever" etc. It doesn't make sense !!. And SPB has praised Rafi many a times because he feels Rafi is the greatest. You even said that he wanted to name his son M.Rafi because he feels he is the greatest ever. Once Manna Dey was on Sa Re Ga MA (tv show) and a person started praising him but Manna stopped him and said only Rafi deserves such praise. So is Manna Dey very humble to stop a person prasing him and say only Rafi deserves such praise. Doesn't make sense again !!. So if everyone praises everyone then everyone is humble right ?. So i'm humble by saying "Sachin Tendulkar is the best batsmen in the world today". C'mon, let's be realistic here !!.
  
  Yes I have been to one of his live shows when he toured with Lata Mangeshkar around NA. It was the Lata Live '95 concert.
  
  By the way has SPB sung any qawallis or any ghazals that can be termed as high class ?
