'pEykaLa nambAthE' sounds like a neelambari to me. (I am a beginner, so if it is wrong please correct me).

Venky. I think it is in Jog.

Hari: I'm so happy to see you back. I've tried to e-mail you, but was never able to get through. Thanks for clearing up my many queries in the past and also for providing the great songs and Ragas for Ramaswamy's page....
Hari/RR: About Minsaara Kanna, the reason I stated that it was in Basanth and not Vasantha is because ARR has used the Basanth notes as well as Vasantha notes in the Hindustaani Aalaap by Hariharan.....I would say that the closest Hindustani Ragam to Vasantha is Basanth......
Venky: There is no relation between Desh and Vasantha.
Raji/Vasu: Vennilave from Minsaara Kanavu is in KEERAVANI.....It has tendencies to resemble Kaafi sometimes.....
Rama: Innisai paadi varum from TMT is Sivaranjani and Keeravani.....SAR has mixed the two, but not in a way to call it a Ragamalika....As for Maadathile, I feel that it's in Jog, as is Peigale....I'm not so farmiliar with Jog, but these two songs are not quite Kambeera Nattai, Thilang or Nattai.....I'm thinking that they may be in Jog....
Venky, it's definitely not Neelaambari....Hear Neelambari in ESK, in Thirakaadha Kaatukuule, which has both Kalyani and Neelambari and also Parasakthy's Veenai bit in the Title song.....

Geetha,
About MaadaththilEy (I have not heard pEigaLai nambaadhEy) I think if one listens to the 'ding dong ding' part of the song and hold that as the frame for the 'sa', the song might appear to be brindavani (brindavani sarang in Hindustani). I guess to conclude whether it is Jog or brindavani, one needs to ascertain where the sa is located.

Gem: Oru Raagam is in Sri Ranjani, I believe....It is one of IR's Sri ranjani Gems:)
RagaG: Very good point - Thanks.....Hari may be able to help us with this.....Come to think of it, maybe it is in Brindhaavani.....I'll try and get hold of the CD and take another listen.....

Geetha,
On a totally different topic, I somehow felt that Nityasree's alaap in the concluding part of Minsara KaNNaa (with Sriram's konnakkOl) was not very crisp. Some of them have been force fit into the Tala structure without being thought out clearly. I guess this is because of 'punching' tracks of NS and Sriram made on two different occasions by ARR. Atleast for some of these songs, I really miss simultaneous recording so that the Tala vadhyam, singing vocals, and konnakkOl are perfectly synchronised (if need be) or perfectly contrasted (if that is the intention). Your (others) thoughts please.

GEM: Nice one......You really are a CUTE LITTLE GEM aren't you?!?!?
Sorry for the digression guys.
RajaG: Points to ponder on....Yes, you're right, the recording has been done separately, hence minor descrepencies.... In many very old songs, I guess the recording is done and perfected in one go, this 'forced' the tracks to be perfect. I can't think of a specific example, but the Konnakol and Raga blend has been done 'seamlessly' before....

well thanx for the answers but you people are going too deep into the ragas, where iam just in the shore haha.
Any way i will try to learn. I heared a song just recently it is "Munnam seydha thavam unnai ennidathil sErthadhaE, dheivam neril vandhu unnai ennidathil inaithadhae" from the movie Vanaja Girija is that song based on a raga, if so what?

Friends,
I have a request. If you have free time, could you pls visit the following site and give comments?

Thanks.

Hello Vasu,
I can see some GREAT work in that site. Thanks.
When I started testing the java-raga search engine(may be I did not use properly) with known mohana raga swaras. But I could not get a accurate search for Mohana raga. I think it needs little bit tune up.
Keep it up

What is the equivalent of Hindustani raag Pahadi in Carnatic music? and are the songs Kora Kagaz (Aradhana), Karwaten Badalte Rahe (Aap ki Kasam) and Bheeghi Bheegi Raaton Mein (Ajnabee) based on Pahadi?
I used to listen to Sangeet Saritha on VBharati in the mornings, where a film song based on classical music is played, and then followed by a pure classical piece.
(BB-in this case it is RaviOrwell :-) this is the best place to get a clarification..

I think it is pahadi itself.

Talking of Pahadi, is the song "aarodum mannil engum neerodum" (from the movie "pazhani") based on Pahadi?

raja: Matthaapoove from Michael Madhana Kaamaraajan is in Pahadi Ragam and I think that Kuzlaloothum Kaanaanukku from Mella Thirandhu Kathavu is mainly Pahadi.... There is a Thillana by Lalgudi jeyaram in this wonderful Raga, which resembles Mohana Kalyani a lot.

All: By the way, have you heard of Navarasa Kannada? There is a famous Paapanaasam Sivam song, Naan Oru Vilaiyaatu Bommaiyaa.
A Malayala MD has used it as part of a Ragamalika in the film Harikrishnas, where he starts in Navarasa Kannada, Goes to Begada and Sahana? and back to NK..... Please take a listen.... It's a lovely combination of Ragas. The song is Thamil Isai Malai, sung by UnniK, Chithra and KJJ.

MS, Saketh and Geetha:
Thanks. Do all the hindi songs I mentioned fall under this raag? Saketh - the song from Pazhani is a classic - has a great flute interlude - discussed by Sriram in the MSV creativity thread.

Geetha,
Is there any song like 'Matthaapoove' from Michael Madhana Kaamaraajan ?
- From: Geetha (@ gatekeeper.oracle.co.uk)
on: Mon Apr 26 12:57:12 EDT 1999
Dhandapani: Indeed there is.....The song didn't appear in the film, I believe, but it was there on the album.....I think Chithra sang it. It's a beautiful number, which brings out the Ragam very well.

I am repeating this post from a different thread, as I consider this thread to be more appropriate for such a discussion.
BTW, on a totally different topic MM Keeravani/MM Kreem/MaragadhamaNi (whatever the flavor of the day is) composes a lot (about 87.3424% rounded to the 4th decimal place) in the audava raagas, especially the mohanam, hindOLam, madhyamaavathi, sudhdha saavEri, sudhdha dhanyaasi permutations of the sruthi bEdhams. A majority of the songs in these raagas become hits. I use the simile of cooking with potatoes. Fairly simple to handle, everybody likes it,and very difficult to spoil, unless one is a really bad cook. It is when you go to a dinner and get aaloo curry AND aaloo koottu, then you question the culinary expertise of the host(ess). Deva did that! (with mOhanam that is, not potatoes) You are absolutely right that other MDs have done that too. But they have shown me aviyal, usili and thogaiyall too! Deva is yet to do that (I must be in a really kind mood today. Or I may be stupidly optimistic to hope for a 'dinner' from Deva!!).
Vimal,
I believe audava is a five note combination for eg. mOhanam which is Sa, Re, Ga, Pa, Dha,.

Geetha, bu mallu MD , I think you are referring to "Samayamathapoorva sayaannam". It is very pleasing and one of my current favorites.
'll be uploading it soon inmy site.

MS: Is that the name of the MD? It was a North Indian Name on the CD cover by Pyramid, but from the music style and the fact that Harikrishnas was a Mallu film, I presumed that it was done by a Malayalee. The song I referred to was Thamil Isai Mazlai. Please give me the URL to your site. Thanks.

Sorry for my ugly statement formulation. What I wanted say was this:When you were referring to a mallu MD, I think you are referring to the 'song' - Samayamithapoorva sayannam. The MD is Ousepachchan. At present my site hosts some songs other songs directed by him, with some, which are not. they are very melodious and my site is:
http://music.acmecity.com/celtic/361/
I think you will beinterested to listen to all because of the carnatic depth each song has. All are evergreen hits of Mallu
Regards
MS
