Sriram,
Thank you. I agree it is more aesthically pleasing to see the gentle motion of the notes than trying to just see a melody as a mere scale.
Sorry I missed your response to my discussion thinking it was Rama entirely.

Some random thoughts.
1. Tere mere Sapne - This is the interesting part. Where is the Sa? If the song is in Bflat Major (and if Bflat is in Sa) then it is in Khamaj. However, if you think the song is set in F minor (with F as Sa) then the song is Misra Gaaraa. Similar is the confusion with KabHi kHudh pE kabHi haalaath pE rOnaa aayaa.
2. The replica of madhyamavathi in Hindustani is actually Madhuvat Saarang - but less popular than Brindaavan Sarang with the double Ni.
3. Vanna Nilave's original song in Telugu, Sowndarya Lahari was set in Chandra Khauns and it formed the theme throughout the movie. While Deva changed the main song, he retained the Chandra Khauns theme.
4. Tere Mere milan ki ye raina, which is actually a Rabindra sangeeth original, is based on Khamaj.
5. While Dharmavathi encompasses Madhuvanthi, the aarohanam for Madhuvanthi is Sa, ga, Ma, Pa, Ni, Sa and the avarOhanaM is sampoorna Dharmavathi.
6. along with point 1 above, is 'kahin dheep jalEy kahin dil - Lata in Bees Saal Baad set in Shiv ranjani or Hamsanandhi?
Sorry, if I have digressed.

rajaG:
Tere mere sapne - The "Sa" of the song is not difficult to find. It comes in the middle. I don't think there is any confusion in that. The problem is that the song "rests" on "Pa" more than it does on "Sa" which is conventional.

Yenna MS,
Did you try playing out the song based on my notations ? Please E-mail a feedback.

Raja G,
Tere Mere Sapne is in Gara (which belongs to the Kamaj That). It uses both ga's (unlike raag khamaj) and both ni's, Also it has a range of lower ma to ma of the madhyasthayi. It is sort of like Jayjayvanthi.
The Hum Dono song on the other hand is entirely in kamaj, avoiding komal ga. Not that I am an expert, but one way of identifying these ragas is through their special prayogams...
On a completely different topic, I happened to watch the movie mandhira punnagai on video. It has a song written and sung by IR "kaali perungaya dabba" (yes, those are the words, no typo!) Guess what the scale is! Rishabhapriya scale (62nd melakarta). This, surely, has to be the only film song in this scale!

RajaG,
Thanks for the info. I understand that the best possible modus operandi for determining the raaga of a song is to play it out in the original scale itself. Now, if wish to play (on my KB)a song in a scale of my choice is there any foolproof method to ensure that I start with the correct swaram ? Right now, I function by instinct, given a combination of S,P,S I can start a song with the appropriate swaram. But the problem arises if the song can be started with more than one swaram. You could play the song commencing with both swarams and still find both versions alright. Please respond.

Hari: There is a very old song in RISHABAPRIYA, this being Vaaliya Needuli, from the film Arivaali...... It's very Carnatic and brings out the Raga very well. As it's the Prathi Madhymam of Charukesi, it has strong hints of that.....I'll try and get the Kaali song, it sounds interesting. By the way, are you THE Brilliant Hari Govindan, from Ramaswamy's page? It's nice to see you back.
By the way, did all of you hear Minsaara Poove from Padayappa. I believe it's based on Basanth(Hindustaani Vasantha).

Hi Geetha,
I am the Hari from Ramaswamy's pages. (thanks for the compliment!) I will try to get the arivali song you talk about. Whose music was it? G Ramanathan's or Venkatraman's?
As far as I know, Basanth is not exactly the equivalent of vasantha; it, basanth that is, uses komal dha and both ma's unlike vasantha.

Hari,
SV Venkatraman was the composer.

Hi Hari/Geetha,
I am a novice in Carnatic music. The 'Minsaara poovE' from Padaiappa sounded like Desh. Is there any similarity between Desh and Basanth (if that is the actual raga of that song). Or, was I just confused because the song sounded Hindustani.
Thanks for the Time

Hi Hari, good to see you back.
Yes, Basanth and Vasantha cannot really be called equivalents. "minsaara kannaa" i think is simply vasantha as do 'andhi mazhai','vandhanam en vandhanam',etc.

Raji,

When I tryed 'Poraalle Ponnuthhayee' of Karuththamma, noticed that this song is Mohanam based. If wrong please someone correct me. If this information is already posted already, please ignore.
Thanks

yes, dhandapani. Lakshminarayanan discusses this and how ARR has used small Ga (sivaranjani) to give pathos effect in the 'soga' version of the same song.

Gem: My guess is that its sriranjani or abhogi. It sounds very similar to "Naadham ezhundhadhadi kannamma.." from Gopura VaasalilE. Anyway Im no expert in this and would like the others to clarify this. That gets me to ask is "Kolusi kolusi esa paadu kolusi .." also the same raaga?

ALso I think "Sandodham kaanaadha vaazhvunda .." also seems to be like the other two mentioned above. Some one please clarify..

CM,
the songs "Sandhosham kaanaadha" and "koluse koluse esa paadu koluse", i think, are both based on the raga Baagesri. There are many other songs in the same raga ("nilave ennidam nerungaadhae", "nee ennenna sonnaalum kavidhai", "ponnezhil poodhadhu pudhu vaanil", "kalaiye en vaazhkaiyin dhisai maatrinaai" etc). Experts clarify.

Hey all,
i think the song from the movie 'thulladha manamum thullum' 'innisai paadi varum ilandhendralukkuruvamillai..' is in sivaranjani. Am i right?.
Is the song 'paattu onnu naan padattumma paal nilava kettu.' from pudhu vasandham in sivaranjani or else what is that?, Experts answer requested

Me again,
I want to know whether the song 'Madathilae kanni madathilae..' from Veera, and the song 'peyhala nambaathae pinjilae vembathae nee yosidoy' from Mahanadhi are of the same raga or not.
Iam nothing in ragas and stuffs, but iam very much interested to be in this thread and try to learn atleast something.
