Hi all,
May I ask you trouble to listen to this piece too?
http://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/~ankumar/Vinayak1.MP3
this is also a slow piece so I hope its not too dull for this audience.
I have sort of started experimenting with pentatonic scales. I find them to be a great way to learn composition in a polyphonic style, since the allowed harmonies are few. For example, in Hamsadvani (on which the present piece is based), we just have I, iii7 and V as the principal chords (did I miss any?!).
This composition goes through a key modulation through part of the circle of fifths C-G-D. Nothing fancy, I just use V as the pivot as you may note. Also, from 2:15 - 3:00 or so, I have attempted to bring a Tanpura like drone using the harp and non-vibrato violins. The idea was to achive this with purely western instruments....to generate a meditative and austere feeling.
I belive this piece is far from maturity, but any thoughts and inputs welcome.
cheers

Divakar,
I liked your piece.
I guess you deliberately avoid following a meter (or is there a more complicated talam cycle?) ... looks more like a "Tanam" done with some Rock influence. The gamakams you intodcuce carefully are very nice...not overdone but just right.
I am also sure there is lot more room for you to improve on this style of playing... keep practicing and updating us!
Also, do you listen to Guitar Prasanna?
best

To Mr.Aditya,
Iam Arun vaidyanathan, director of short film 'As you wish...' keying this response. Thanks for your review about the music by our friend Mr.Srikanth. His name is not there in the credits ..because of the time constraint in triggerstreet website. We have trimmed down the movie to 10 mins from 14 mins particularly suiting the website and i have written that in production notes also.
We just showed two credits since they dont allow any movie without credits :-) The full version has all the credits and it will be screened in Newjersey soon with all the technicians involved. Thanks a lot once again for taking some pain in registering there and coming with a analysed review of music.

Arun,
Not only the music, I enjoyed your direction of the film too...very tasteful in narration...
Best Wishes,
Aditya

Anand,
Thanks for listening and Ur comments. Most of the time I don't follow the meter, thereby I can keep my performance fluid and un-restrictive.
But if I know what I am gonna perform beforehand, like a pre-written composition, or if its a song that involves percussions and other rhythm instruments I dont have much choice and I follow the meter....So there's that small difference. Anyway its more of a personal choice than anything.
Sure, I have listened to prasanna...there;s lot one can learn from him when it comes to the guitar world...
Thanks

Hi folks,
Long time since I visited this page. First things first.
Anand:
I really would like to know more about the softwares you use because arul had mentioned that you bought a softare which you liked immensely and could produce good music out of it. I think you had composed a piece with horns which was really very beautiful. This piece of yours is also very nice.
Diwakar:
Most of the time I hardly understand your music due to my limited comprehension. But it is immaterial since I always enjoy it to the fullest. Great going man. You have too many colors in your mind.

And as an amendment for the hiatus, I am presenting here a song composed by my with the lyrics of Udhaya in a classical mode in raga hindholam.
The song:

The making:

This pallavi and charanam 1 were pre-written by Udhaya which I set to tune. I needed one more charanam to "culminate" and Udhaya came up with brilliant lyrics for a tune I gave for second charanam. I feel extremely good to see such beautiful tamil and I am honored in every sense to have Udhaya's beautiful lyrics to sing/compose. Sometimes the usage is so strong that it hardly gets out of my mind thereby hindering my concentration in other wordly chores. Thanks Udhaya.
Pass your comments freely folks

sureshkumar,
I applaud you for attempting a complex structure like this koothuppaattu. You have captured the natural rhythm and drive that's a must in these songs.
"Vanjavuga vayadaikka-vayiru
Erinjavuga neruppanaikka
Muttalunga mookarukka vandhaandi
Veerangondu ezhundhu intha virumandi"
I liked the above lines the best besides the strong start and finish. This reminds me of the publicity teasers they use in the villages about upcoming events during festivals. If you take more care by weeding out the familiar phrasings and inject fresh language, this song could become explosive.
