If you think only our country is plagued by this problem of plagiarism then sample this article!
This talks about how Greek composers were dabbling heavily in hindi film compositions with no acknoledgements!

Very interesting article!

Jakaz:
I am seeing you for the first time here. Your input is really good. Pitiest thing is we ourself degrate our great MDs. Be it IR or ARR or for that matter any body who has contributed. No other country has such a widely talented bunch of Music people, who inspite of all odds and geographical barriers have been able to set high standards.
If you ask MJ or Andrew LLoyod Weber to compose a tune based on pure hindustani or carnatic raga, then I am sure they will not be able to do it before their death.
What we are doing here is instead of appriciating each others talent, we resolve to cheap bashing and arguments. Each fans group feel jealous of other and ultimately the loosers are these fans who fail to listen to the other and enjoy it. Healthy aruments that leads to to information exchange is good. But, some times it gets out of hands.

Karthik S it was a fantastic article. Almost scholarly. Especially the reference to bhairavi rAgam. I also learn that there is a carnAtic rAgam that has an equivalent in middle-eastern music. The article was a very good history lesson as well. I do not see anything wrong in borrowing from other cultures in terms of music or other art forms. It has to be presented to the audience with a local flavor. But fascination for another culture cannot/should not be out of an inferiority complex or a desire to exclude ourselves ourselves from our poorer brethren. I think what was happening in Greece (fascination with the west is happening in India too) is happening in India as well. We have been using Western Classical Music in our films for a long time without it overshadowing our own music. So any effort like this is welcome !!

Hi,

U must take into consideration the popularity of
the music (Mind u, i'm not talking about quality)
When u ask arr to compose a song like MJ, he can
do it, as the music is popular thro'out the country, whereas MJ wudn't have heard anything
about thyagayyar's works!
Had they been as popular as MJ's work, may be MJ
too could've done that.

Michael Jackson(MJ) doing krithis like thyagayyar...
S, just to remind u, the krithis of thyagayyar and for that matter krithis of trinity, meera, purandaradasa etc are not just Classical krithis they have the Bhakthi element more in them which IMHO MJ(of present form) will never be able to bring even an iota level of it.
If MJ could manage to do something like that then he would never be popular or never go behind popularity.
So, don't even think about MJ/ALW with our Great Musical Lords. If you wish compare them with IR, ARR and likes.
- From: Karthik S (@ 164.164.82.20)

I feel its MJ/ALW's loss that they dunno what classical Indian music is. They'd complete their their pointless existence if they die without ever knowing about the treasure that is in Indian Classical music.
Pity. And dont even compare them with our musical greats. Present day composers including IR/ARR seems more like a fair comparison. Added both IR and ARR 'cos it makes sense to me...if somebody has a grudge for having included IR saying that he's cut apart/above and so on...sorry. Sorry for ARR fans for the same reasons!
:-)

Here's another old one. Only this time, they are accompanied by song clips!
Original:
'kasme vaade pyaar wafa'
Movie: Upkar (1968)
Music: Kalyanji Anandji
Listen: http://hammer.prohosting.com/~arr/kasmevaadepyaarwafa.rm
Copied:
'kanavu kaanum vaazhkai yaavum'
Movie: Neengal Kettavai (1984)
Music: Ilayaraja
Listen: http://hammer.prohosting.com/~arr/kanavukaanum.rm
One of the rare ones of Ilayaraja. But please dont start that exchange-ilaya nila story again! Listen and let go. Everybody does it...ARR does it twice, at that!

I'm quite sure Priyam's dilruba dilruba is copied too. Music: Vidyasagar. It has shades of Amr Diab's (A middle eastern singer) 'habibi' number. But there should be a direct original. Does anybody have any clue?

That was a good one Karthik, it's very rare to see IR copying a song completely. I dont have a site to refer, but I do know that "Rettai vaal kuruvi" title music is lift from a very popular korean music. I shall get back with you later on this.
One more tribute to Deva's cogging ..
"Singapore Selai" in Kalki is a direct lift from IR's "Aadum neram" in 'soora samhaaram'
Also the popular "Nee nadanthaal nadai azhagu" is a simple take off from Lata's "dilbar" in 'Caravan' composed by RDB.

Hey, keep away from this forum for some time or else you will get into lot of troubles. HC IR fans will not leave you just like that. Why do you invite sleepless nights Yaar. idam arinchi solanum.... unmai aanalum..!!!. Even if it's a truth, you should not let it out like this.

Thats a real surprise. Rettai vaal kuruvi? Which song are you talking about?
In any case, if you check the copied songs page in newtfmpage, you can find that even the theme music for IR's Mouna Raagam has been inspired to a large part from a track from Flash Dance.
Anyway, do let us know the original Korean song, so that I can trace it and post it.
