Thiru, yes, it is from Gulebagaavali. The main purpose of the song was to help me in paattukku paattu times, when I am asked to sing in "la" :-)

I remember the grim faced G Varaliakshmi (not S varalakshmi) was the heoine of Gulebagaavali. I recently saw the song also in Sun TV.
GV never allowed MGR to hold her or embrace. Jest only some touches. Though the song is damn melodious, the seq was really a comedy and I enjoyed thoroughly whenever MGR tries to touch her and GV jest like that removing his hand... :-)))

Yes Subbu, G Varalakshmi, (with her eyebrows artificially joined to give a supposedly Islamic appearance), was a bad choice for the romantic role!

rjay, this one is for you:
Song of the Day: kaNNellaam un vaNNam from oNNE oNNu kaNNE kaNNu.

- A good song by V.Kumar. Sung by SPB and Swarna (?).
- A detailed thread on V.Kumar Films: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/22043.17.57.10.html

- According to Saravanan, the film starred Sivakumar and Jayachithra. The film also has 'Paal manam poo manam'-SPB & PS.

Was it not Sivakumar and Lakshmi in oNNE oNNu kaNNE kaNNu? Not Jayachitra !!

Subbu- it was definitely Jayachitra- I have seen the song on TV.
K Swarna was a good singer, unfortunately she didn't get too many songs. Kumar, known for his humility and professional ethics, gave his talented wife only minimum opportunities. Nonetheless, Swarna impressed in the few songs that came her way. Some of Swarna's good songs:
(btw all by VK)
1.Seithi ketto-Ethirneechal-with SC Krishnan,PS and Jamunarani
2.Vellai manam konda pillai-Paththaampasali-with TMS
3.Ezhuthaatha padal ondru-Then Sindhudhe Vaanam-with TMS
4.Inangalile enna inam-Nalla Pennmani-with KJY
5.Pattathu rajan-Nalla Pennmani-with SJ
6.Iraivan koyil ondru-Janaki Sabatham-with KJY
7.Ennodu ennennavo ragasiyam-Thoondil Meen-with JC
8.Aarambam, maalai nerathu-Chathurangam-with SJ
9.Ada Abishtu-Chathurangam-with PS
10.Oru paarvai paarkum pothu-Nangooram-with SPB (humming by Swarna)
11.Bharathikku oru kannamaa-Shankari-with Rajkumar Bharathi (humming by Swarna)
Btw, I always a doubt whenever I listen to the song: SPB says 'Nee oru paadhi thandhaal', Swarna replies: 'Naanum or paadhi undu'- shouldn't her line be 'Neeyum or paadhi undu'?!

In the picturization of "maNiyOsai kEttu ezhundhu", the singer who is shown alongside Mohan is Swarna, right?

I don't think so,bb- Swarna looked much better :)

Saravanan,
In Chathurangam, I remeber the song "ada abishtu" was for Jayachitra and Co.
For whom the song "Aarambam, maalai nerathu" was picturised? Was that the last song for L. Kanchana and another cab dancer, who try to mayakkufy Rajini?
There was something behind "Inangalile enna inam-Nalla Pennmani-K.Swarna with KJY. According to the original plan, PS was supposed to sing with KJY. She came in later having requested for a track recording. So, V Kumar asked KSwarna to pitch in for the track. When VK's team received PS for actual recording, she was quite happy that the rendering of KSwarna came out very well; She asked VK to retain KS's version only. This episode demo-ing PS's generosity, was described by the none other than the couple VK-KS.
Saravanan, KS sung in Iru kodugal also along with ALR, Jamuna Rani for that "office-get-together" cum "musical chair" song seq. I guess it starts with "Pappa pattu padiya bharathi".

Subbu, I think you're right about the Chathurangam song sequence. Abt. the musical chair song in Iru Kodugal, it is 'Naan oru gumastha' by TMS & co. 'Paappa paattu' is also by TMS, if I remember right, maybe Swarna also chipped in between.
The background of 'Inangalile' is news to me.

sk- you are right- sorry for the typo- it is indeed 'Ilamai koyil ondru irande deepangal, irandum erigindrana' - I love Swarna's lines: Koondhalai anai aakkungal, koodalai suvai aakkungal--, again the way she sings 'Kodungal--edungal--swargam varum' is so inviting!

Rathin, tfm is filled with so many such little known singers, who have lent their voice for great songs. Unfortunately, many of them are all but forgetten.
Why K Swarna, many of V Kumar's excellent compositions are thought by many to be by MSV.
I once gave a Recording Center owner in Chennai a piece of my mind when he cooly said that 'Thirukkoyil thedi Rathi devi vandhaal' was a great song by MSV!

Saravanan, you brought back to me a beautiful song which i used to hum in younger days.
7.Ennodu ennennavo ragasiyam-Thoondil Meen-with JC

Guys,
Wasn't "indru mudhal chandhiranin..." humming done by Swarna?

Thoondil Meen starred Malayaala Mohan (Lakshmi's second husband) and Lakshmi. I thought "Thoondil Meen" was by Vijayabasker.

Udhaya A- I think you are referring to 'Indru mudhal selvamidhu'-Veetukku Oru Pillai-1971. That humming was by B Vasantha

Another Swarna song I just remembered- 'Nee thaan mohiniyo' with AL Raghavan from Vegulippen, again by VK.

Saravanan,
// G Varalakshmi, (with her eyebrows artificially joined to give a supposedly Islamic appearance), was a bad choice for the romantic role! //
Why would joining the eyebrows make one look islamic?

haris- That's why I said 'supposedly' :)- that's a supposition by our Kodambakkam knowledgeables! It hasn't changed over the years btw- remember Amala in Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu?!

Saravanan -
Thanks. I just got caught up in the "meen"s :-)
Vilangu Meen was a brave film (in thematic terms). A bit ahead of its times.
Thoondil Meen, I remember vaguely. Wasn't it also about some mystery/adultery/crime gone wrong plot?
Mohan (Mal) couldn't act out of a brown paper bag if his life depended on it.
Did he not make a brief (thankfully) appearance in Salangai Oli?
- From: GCT_Kuil (@ 128.107.253.38)
on: Wed Mar 26 15:12:13 EST 2003
Oops..I mistook that Thoondil meen song as a later version of PS and not as Swarna....Thx for that Dobri
Regarding that
// G Varalakshmi, (with her eyebrows artificially joined to give a supposedly Islamic appearance), was a bad choice for the romantic role! //
That was a good comment...Thats how the tamil movie industry portray when they want to show a muslim gal! ;-) From the Black/White period to Mella thiranthathu kathavu (May be in later films also)

Saravanan:
thirukkOyil thEdi radhi dhEvi vandhAL (mittAy mummy) .. I have always been thinking that it was by MSV! (Please feel free to give me a piece of your mind. :))) Going by the tune, though, it doesn't look like MSV's. Wasn't the movie by Madurai Thirumaran who made movies such as Mayor Meenatchi and Rowdi Raakkamma (both by MSV)? Can you give more details about this mittaay mummy movie? Is KRV the heroine? What are the other songs? thirukkOyil thEdi is really a lovely song! (bb: Take note for SOTD.)

Dig - It is a fact that many ethnic groups in the northern parts(read Sindhis, Punjabis, Aryans) have eyebrows that nearly touch. Just observe closely. - End dig.
