rjay and others,
Is cello used in this Balanagamma song? Is there any WCM-based movements in the prelude and interludes? Please enlighten.

Mythological varam??
Saravanan
The KuchalaKumari version of Balanagamma must be prior to 1959,i think.(KK must have certainly disturbed many current day Thathas!.)
The VaLLalar padal "Orumayudan ninathu thirmalaradi ninaikindra uthamar tham uravu vendum" is set to Bilahari. Can u get the movie?
Kalki (or Viktan??) in its review mentioned about the Synthesizser sounds in Balanagamma.I think "palliyaraikuL Malligayai Alli iraikkum"-the UR song had a lot of synth sounds too.
The movie was pathetic.Sarathbabu s "Raja vesham" can match Arvindswamay s Gramathan vesham " in the outrageous "Thalattu".Sri was, as ever, gorgeous and stunning.

CV,
Anandame jaya*2 must be much older than 1980. It was composed by a certain Father Masillamony of Thiruvannamalai. He had also composed the more famous Thanthaanai Thuthipome, which Saravanan earlier quoted as one of Jency's thanippaadals.

Prabhu- I have heard 'Thandhaanai Thidhippome' sung by Jikki, and its a wonderful song. Btw, never heard it sung by Jency. I know Jency turned to singing Christian devotionals after 1982-Has she too sung 'Thandhaanai Thudhippome'?
OISG- Vaathiyaar has already answered your query-'Orumaiyudan' from Konjum Salangai is sung by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi. Speaking of Vallalaar, have you heard the songs of Arutperunjothi-1971? The film was based on the life of the great savant, and had some amazing songs, many by SJ, singing for the child Vallalaar (played by Master Shekar)-'Arutperunjothi', 'Thirovodu', 'Seer konda' and my favourite 'Neerundu, pozhigindra kaar undu'- the entire album is a rare semi-classical treat.
bb- hope you choose 'Mayakkama kalakkama' or 'Ninapathellam nadanthuvittaal'- today's disappointment needs a soothing balm :( (Indha matcha paarka enga officela half-day leave vera vittaanga!)

bb,
In honor of the world cup tragedy, just play the first part of "Veedu varai uravu", i.e. "aadiya aattam ennaa?" as an elegy.

Another suggestion: Etharkkum oru kaalam undu poruththiru magale from Sivakamiyin Selvan.

If India HAD won, 'oru kopaiyile yen kudiyiruppu' would have been autochoice. Tendulkar now singing 'Oora therinjukitten' inst of 'enkitta modhadhe'/'pothuvaaga en manasu'!
Saravanan, sorry I was referring to Jikki only, not Jency.
But its possible for same song to be sung by diff singers, since devotionals are old favorites and it depends on the composer/recording company which decides to bring out a new edition. There are songs for which PS handled old tracks and years later KSC sang them with more modern music.

In the lines of Bilahari raaga, there is a famous christian song "Osanna paaduvOm esuvin dhasare". It was popularised when PS released her first record with Jesus way in 1964-65.
In "Bala nagamma", there was a big list of singers shown with only one male singer i.e Yesudas. I think only one song with male voice (or any other song sung by KJY?). I still remember the list of female sinegrs P.Suseela, S.Janaki, Vani Jayaram, S.P Sailaja, Uma Ramanan & B S Sasirekha. Even though BSS was much more senior to SPS and Uma, her name appeared last! The humming by BSS was very sweet in deed!

Song of the Day: mayakkum maalaip pozhudhE from gulEbagaavali.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maya.ra
- I chose this song for A.M.Raja's voice. MD: K.V.Mahadevan. Sung by AMR and Jikki. Lyrics by Vindhan.
- There is an interesting discussion between Sriram Lakshman and Manisegaran, on who is the composer for this song. The other songs in this film were composed by Visvanathan-Ramamoorthy. SL mentions that this song was composed by KVM for T.R.Ramanna before this movie was conceived. It seems the song was used in this movie even without VR's consent.
The discussion can be found here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/17288.11820.22.02.30.html . KVM composed this song for the film kooNdukkiLi.
- Greatness of A.M.Raja: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/21660.22.25.26.html
- More on AMR and KVM by Manisegaran:
Am Raja had been very seldom used by KVM, for example:
1. Inmabey Pongumey - Bommai Kalyanam
2. Anbey Nee angey naan ingey-Bomai Kalyanam
3.Kayiley Inippathenna-in Manamulla Marutharam.
4. En Kathal Inbam Ithuthaana- Thaikku Pin Thaaram.
In fact AM Raja had a misunderstanding with KVM after Manamulla Marutharam. So KVM wrote him off. In fact many wrote off AM Raja in the cine filed especially after the box-office hit of Kalayana Parisu, followed by Anbullor Anni, Then Nilavu, Adi Perukku and Vidivelli.

Many thanks for this mellow, enchanting duet, bb.
RR Pictures' Gulebagaavali-1955 was, like Balanagamma, the second time the same fairy tale came to screen. Based on a story from 1001 Nights, Gulebagavaali was first filmed in 1935. Produced by Tamilnaadu Talkies’ S.Soundararajan, the earlier version starred VA Chellappa and TP Rajalakshmi. It too had some good songs sung by VAC like ‘Vanithamaniye mounameno’ and ‘Illahi rasoolulla’.
It is said that TR Ramanna was inspired by the thundering success of Thooku Thooki to make this fantasy. The failure of his attempts at realistic social themes: Vaazha Piranthaval-1953 & Koondu Kili-1954 is said to have disheartened him, and he embarked on Gulebagaavali, with his sister TR Rajakumari producing it, and Thanjai N. Ramiahdoss writing the script and the lyrics. Ramiahdoss also modified the original story to make it more thrilling.
This film was a smash hit (stg. MGR, TR Rajakumari and others)- and it stands in history as the first big hit of V-R, and also was the first film in which TMS sang for V-R. All the songs became popular: Aniyaayam indha aatchiyiley-TMS, Maaya valaiyil veezhndhu-TMS, Kaiyai thottadhum( Deiveega kaadhal)-TMS-P Leela, Aasaiyum en nesamum- Koka Jamunarani’s famous ‘vikkal’ song, Jikki’s catchy Sokka Potta navaabu, Kannaley pesum-Jikki & chorus, Villendhum veerarellaam-Tiruchi Loganathan & P Leela (amazing song, which has lines in Hindi and Malayalam too!), Allah hu Akbar by Nagoor Haneefa, which progresses to the soulful Nayagame Nabhi Nayagame by SC Krishnan, and Achchu nimirndha vandi by JP Chandrababu and a female voice, perhaps Rathnamala.
Mayakkum maalai pozhuthey is said to be set to Bagesri ragam. Other songs in this lilting ragam- Kaana inbam kanindhadheno-Sabash Meena, Pattu siragadithu- Ponni Thirunaal, Kalaiye en vaazhkkayin dhisai maatrinaai-Meenda Sorgam, Sangeetham paadatha-Vasanthi etc ( I know I am treading in dangerous ground here!)
AMR has also sung for KVM in Kumari-1952-the songs: ‘Kaathal solai’, ‘Azhiyaatha kaadhal’ and ‘Irulile nilavolippol’ (AMR’s first song with Jikki)
