The golden era of tfm must be the period when viswanathan-ramamurthy reigned supreme in the 1960's. Their songs have become immortal classics! Would they have shined in hindi film music, considering that they used a lot of hindustani ragas in their tamil film music? Just go to this website for a glowing commentary on their 1956 hindi film, Naya Aadmi:
http://members.tripod.com/~ATMJH/in4.html
Even though the songs in this film were well received, somehow they did not get any more opportunities in hindi films after this film. Would they have posed a formidable challenge to shankar-jaikishan in hindi films?
What do tfm surfers think?

OISG and GR:
When nALai namadhE was released, there were 2
versions being shown in various cities.. one with
kAdhal enbadhu kAviyamAnAl and one
without. You get to see (not worth, though)
the video of this song frequently on SUN TV.
In those days, "different versions of the same movie"
phenomenon was common. I remember vasantha mALigai
had 2 versions.. one having Sivaji dying at the
end (for pathos lovers) and one where he lives
to marry Vanisree.

I couldn't see the movie "Naalai Namathey" when it was release because my parents were not married. :-) I saw that movie before 5 years in VCR. In the movies, immediately after "Ennai Vittal" song latha goes to Muruhan temple to pray for MGR (he pretends as if he had heart attack). After the prayer MGR reveals the truth. Appuram chinna oodal and then koodal with the song "Kaathal Enpathu Kaaviyamanal". The same movie was telecasted in different TVs many times with that song. No idea about two versions of that movie.

BTW Billa is also a remake. Any comments?

My name is Billa was better than the "Mehon Don".the Tamil version had SPB just living Rajini s character.
But "Paanu Banares wallah" was too much for "Vethalya potendi".KK -KA would have outdone MVD-MSV combine.
The other songs in both the movies were ordinary IMHO.
Ninaiththai mudipavan -MGR "Oruvar meethu oruvar sainthu" just lifts the tamil version of "SAcha-Juta" ahead in comparision.
The Poo mazhai had the interludes which resembled the Hindi eqv.But overall MSV has done a better job than KA.

oh! Ninaithanai Mudipavan is a remake! Interesting. Apoorva Ragangkal went to Hindi also. Was it a hit? (I think Hemamalini and Kamal). Who is the MD? How about the songs?

Hope you know by now that i am not SL!
Billa is by MSV only.Balaji came back to MSV after Deepam,Thyagam and Nallathoru Kudumbam with IR in this movie.(this is for info only.Sathiyama)
Aboorava Ragangal i remember the tunes which were just ordinary ( LP )when compared to Tamil.I think AVR or SL might have more info.
Varumayin niram sigappu was again a music disaster by LP.Sippi irukuthu ...vendam..LP will get a life sentence from any TFM fan.
LP killed "Aval oru Thodar kathai"too .Watch Amol palekar doing Kamal s "Kadavul ameithuveitha medai".For MSV /Kamal /SPB every TFM fan "rendu sotu kaneer vidunga".
LV Prasad was the producer who ,even for his Tamil movies had only KVM and not MSV.
IR too suffered at the hands of LP with "Solva Savan" (Pathinaru vayathinile)

From where did u hunt out these names? :-) This is the first time I have heard them. Anyway, who sang the songs in the Hindi version of Apoorva Raagangal. Can u post the first line of each song, please? I am curious to hear the Hindi version of "ezhu swarangalukkul", "asthiya raagam" and "kelviyin naayagane".

It is from memory only, for sure!I am not sure about the links for the songs.
ENP had Hema Malini & Kamal
ZSZ had Kamal and anita Raj
The songs i had listened to in Vivith Bharathi around 84-85.ZSZ the Sippi irukkuthu used to come to come in Rangoli -of DD fame.I remeber SPB s voice in ZSZ and Lata s in ENP.The first lines were as forgettable as the rest of the song.
Since you know very well by now ,that i am a "Tamil Taliban"just imagine how disappointed i would have been!!
Another shock for me was the "Sursangam" - the Shankarabaranam remake.KArnad could not fit in,JP gave a better performance than Manju Bargavi. But music ..alas!the less said the better.LP i think!!
the "Siri Siri muvva" remake where the "Uricha Kozhi Rishi kapoor" dances for "Daphliwale" was another heart braker!

OISG, is right. 'zarA sI zindagi' and 'Ek nayI pahElI' were remakes of 'varumayin niram sigappu' and 'aboorva rAgangaL' respectively. The Hindi songs sucked big time, sorry I am not in a mood to throw invectives at LP now, though they deserve it.
Agreed, IR's '16 vayathinilE' was a masterpiece whereas the Hindi version needn't have come into existance at all ! I am sure, the same was the case with 'Red Roses' and IR's 'sigappu rOjakkaL'.
I have forgotten the name for the Hindi version of 'avaL oru thodarkathai'. But I do remember listening to counterpart of 'kadavuL amaiththu vaiththa mEdai', 'gangarAm kavarA reh gayA' by Kishore Kumar, the mother of all disasters, again another LP fiasco. The difference in quality in all these movies is too palpable.
'thillu mullu' was a remake of 'gOlmAl' by R.D. Burman. 'gOlmAl hai sub gOl mAl hai' is a pretty good number and so is the TFM counterpart. Same with 'AnE wAlA phal jAnE wAlA hai' and 'rAgangaL pathinAru'. But the Tamil version in this case is a lot more sophisticated with thrilling sangathis.
'pyAr kiyE jA' is an insult to MSV-TKR's 'kAthalikka nEramillai' . 'nALAm nALAm', 'anubavam puthumai', 'mAdi mEla mAdi katti'....... O God...'pyAr kiyE jA' shouldn't have happened!!!

Going by LP's standards, 'Sur Sangam' was alright but 'Sargam' (remake of 'siri siri muvva') was a LP disaster, but a hit. But that was the standard of HFM in the late 70s, pitiable.

Were there any comparisons floated by Magazines for these songs?
Always MSV suffered because some quack would come up with the phrase " The hindi originals were terrific ..blah..blah.."
Take the case of Maro charithra - the SPB version of "Ethiga poov" was a grand one.." when sPB sings you feel for the character. But he walks away with the National award for the Hindi eqv which was just a rehash of " Mere Naina Saavan" by RDB(Teri Kasam)
The "Padaharelu" VJ song was a stunner.
The "Lift" song tells you how imaginative the MD is when he finishes the charanams with the humming of "Eru pooti povaye anne chinnanne 's Telugu version".I think it was a hit telugu song by Pendyala. It was a hit in tamil too.

OSIG, 'Ethigapoovono' is in Revathai raga which was later used by MSV with a romantic feel for 'manthirappunnagai' in 'maNal kayiru'. 'tErE mErE beech mein' is in the much hackneyed Sivaranjani, made so by certain formula composers in HFM.
I wish the VJ song had been sung by PS. VJ, I thought lacked / always lacks the 'decorating' skills that add value to a tune.
'Eru pootti pOvAyE' is in 'kAlam mAri pOchchu' a lift by Pendyala from S.D. Burman's 'dEkhnE mein bhOlA hai' by Asha, I think in 'bombay kA bAbu', a Dev Anand starrer.
After the release of 'Ek dujE kE liyE' , 'ananda vikatan' had this to say about the music 'L-P kitta ithai solla vENdum...nam ooril MSV endroru isai amaippALar irukkirAr. avarukku avargaL oru kOyil katta vENdum'. Even Kamal tried approaching KB through Ananthu to try and get the songs altered, but to no avail. The songs were retained as they were and went on to become a rage.

I hv listened to Maro Charithra songs several times. Except the two hit songs, the hindi songs are just junk. I think Padaharelluhu was by SJ. Where are the matches for "Bale Bale Mogadivoi" and "Vidhi Cheyu Vinthalanni"?

what about "alayamani" songs in hindi? I remember DK played Sivaji s role.
