Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

Hi Ali you are very right about the older composers using classical as their base. Somehow even I cant seem to figure out why that has gone out of the Hindi film music. On the other hand I guess that there is a strong pop culture and the influence of music from across the globe plays a part in people liking different kinds of music. I used to listen to Hindi film music as a kid when there was no television and all u had was radio and a few records. I loved SJ, RDB, SDB and I loved Hemant Kumar and Ravi. Then in the late 70's to eightees I was seriously into rock and blues so Hindi music took a far backseat and theough LP and Bappi did come with some good stuff it never really did get to me somehow I found too much of the Bihari , UP sound in the music. When I heard RD's Ek Ladki Ko Dekha from 1942 somehow that kind of got my attention as being such a wonderful composition from the master. Then believe it or not ARR's Roja was the first Hindi Cd I bought in years !!!! Then DUS happened and I guess we were in game too.Ilove Rafi Saab but I wish Kishore Kumar were still around !!!

Ehsaan,
Have you listened to Ilayaraaja's classics in Tamil? Or are you, like many others from the North, ignorant of this genius composer and his work? If you'd like, I can list a few must-listen albums to begin with.
Cheers!

"Or are you, like many others from the North, ignorant of this genius composer and his work?"
Peter Pan, Ehsaan mentioned this just in the previous page
"We still maintain that ARR and IlyaRaja are our favorite composers in this country and we have nothing but the utmost respect for him.
"
Lets not drive out knowledgable musicians (when they frequent TFMDF once in a bluemoon) with our usual IR-ARR stuff.

Please ignore juveniles like Peter Pan.
IR is a very ordinary musician who has just been over-hyped but who played a big role in bringing down TFM. We are mostly thankful that he has been completely side lined now.
Please do not listen to any of his albums, as it is not reflective of popular taste in TN.

Thanks for your replies.
There are a lot of Hard core fans in this forum and most of them behave like terrorists, insisting that people must conform to their tastes and beliefs.
Please ignore them.
I am really depressed to hear that you do not have any Tamil movies in hand. You are right about Aalavandhan not doing well in the box office. If the movie had been successful, producers would have made a beeline to your studio.
Shankar Mahadevan is quite a rage among the Tamil listeners today. But then again, it would not be proper for him to use his influence, especially since he is a singer for many MDs.
I really hope that you would get a second chance with Tamil movies and look forward to that day.

I'm surprised that after Dil Chahta Hai SEL hasn't been courted by South Indian producers. That album was fantastic, IMO, and must have been quite popular in Tamil Nadu. It's good to see that SEL is enjoying success in Hindi film music.

Ehsaan,
Don't get me wrong.
There are many reasons why I posed that question about Ilayaraaja to you. Here's one:
I met Shankar in '94 (he was singing for jingles then) when he came to Western Outdoor Studios to do the vocals for the soundtrack of our CD-ROM called 'Karishma, The Wonder That is India', which Louis Banks was composing. I was surprised when he (Shankar) said that he was not at all familiar with Ilayaraaja's work. For an upcoming singer to be ignorant of the works of a prolific composer of close to 800 films from his native land was indeed unbelievable!
Have you heard the Ilayaraaja's albums of the 70's, 80's and early 90's? He's always been much ahead of his time.
Good luck on 'Nayee Padosan'. I heard it's a re-take on 'Padosan'. Do you know 'Padosan' itself was a copy of the Tamil super hit of the Black & White era, 'Adutha Veettu PeNN'? It also started the trend of poorly stereotyping the so-called 'Madrasis' in Hindi films, and Mahmood went on to make a career out of it!

Ehsaan, its such a pleasant surprise for us to see you here, welcome to this forum :)
As a trio you are on the threshold of establishing yourselves in the big league and getting some really major projects now. Wishing you all the very best in future!
Do please share with us some your experiences in composing for commercial cinema. With such an assortment of music being produced today, how do you decide which style to stick with? How frequently does working with film directors as opposed to separate albums curb your freedom of musical expression? What is your guidance to amateur composers today?

PP
Adutha Veetu Penn was origianlly made in Telugu produced by Adi Naryan Rao who also composed the music.(He is Anjali Devi s husband)
Ehasan
Welcome.
Your (trio) effort in Nagesh Kukunoor s venture was good.Aalavandhan (abhay)effort was a "Good attempt".But still a long way to go.You need to get out of Louis Bank s hangover.Stop doing Hindi pop.(getting bracketed with Altaf Raja, and the Balle Balle CDs it is a short cut to disaster!)
You need to do listen to Old tamil/telugu/Malyalam classics to get the feel and nativity factor which is absent in bollywood music.
A sincere suggestion is never ever get into Joint ventures with other HFM MDs.They are woefully short of musical talent.A movie with the likes of Anu,Anannd-Milind ,NS,JL you may have to start "Sa-pa-sa" all over again and you will be madly shopping for Magreb (Mediterranean -Arab)CDs in Dubai.

I apologize for that mail. I didn't think twice.
OISG, PP - just FYI
The original of the movie "Adutha veettu penn" in telugu is called "Pakkinti ammaayi". It had SPB acting with Chandramohan (the corresponding roles in Hindi were Kishore Kumar and Sunil Dutt).

Talking about composition style it basically works out as per the script. In DCH Koi Kahe was used for a club party situation hence the music was all trancey. I guess it all depends on what is correct for the script and very often what excites the director and us at the spurr of the moment. My guidance to amateur composers is that do not be influenced by the medium that u r working with at least where songs are concerned. Like a writer is influenced by world events , poetry , film , history a music director should be listening to music other than just film music ( by inluence i dont mean copying ) there is a whole world of music out there and listening to all of that should be the education to the md. Yes old film songs and compositions are also essential listening but unfortunately people tend to sound like each other then. I listen to a wide wide variety of music from world muisc to jazz to rock and film soundtracks.

Mr. Ehsaan, what are the influences you would like happenin in HFM or IHM in general? I think Hollywood of the 50s and 60s upto the Sound of Music brought out very intelligent and sublime compositions. likewise Latin melodies. Indian films have also done ecstatic musical works, however, lately Indian composers have stopped thinkin out of the box. There is hardly any symmetry, sophistication or elegance. I wish the orchestration were softer and less cheezy. More lush and soft violin backing, etc..
