Saravanan,
Here are all the songs from ROR,
1. Amma Adi Amma Sugam Summa Varumaa (KJY, SJ)
2. Ezhisai Geethamee Ennakkoru (KJY)
3. Ezhisai Geethamee Ennakkoru (SJ)
4. Kaatrinilee Varum Geetham (VJ)
5. Naadu Nalla Naadu Aanaakaa (MVD)
6. Paadi Azhiththeen Unnai (KJY)
7. Unnakkaagavee Naan Uyir (SJ)
8. Velli Muukku Minna Minna (KJY, SJ)
The donkey braying song you mentioned is the last one.
Seems like Ravindharan's favourite singers are KJY and SJ!

Another mediocre song, IMHO.
It was as if the MD was pre-determined for a sivranjani compose and traversed through the swaraas without attaching an iota of 'jeevan' to it.
KJY adds to the woes in his low treble-bass-amplitude-et al voice.
No wonder Ravindran evaporated in no time in TFM.
In an attmept to be rare, obscure and different, SOTD today was "Slip-of-the-Day'.

This is one of those several (tamil)movies, where is the heroine is a "ganabAdigaL" (ambika is only second to KRVijaya in bhuja bala parAkramam) and the hero is pathetic, emaciated, thin as a rail, contenter for Mr. Ethiopia. (The height of this was Kamal vs KR Vijaya (mis)match.
If you listen to this songs once, this attracts you greatly, but somehow as B-ve. puts it, this is hollow and completely misses jeevan. Another pathetic point is KJY 'mallufying' the whole lyrics (you don't need to look for specific phrases for this effect, but the whole song is sung to satisfy audience west of the western ghats). Words in the song like "Ss..warangkaLai mIttuvEn" "gaanam jIva gAnam" , so forth make it sound a canonical malayalam song (a canonical malayalam song is more generic than a typical tamil, because it lacks variery totally).
Contrast this with aamani paadave... in gIthanjali (telugu version of ithayaththaith thirudaathE), sung by SPB. (NO comparisons with tamil version by Mano, please).

Song of the Day: varavu ettaNaa selavu paththaNaa from Bama Vijayam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/varavu.rm
- This funny song is sung by TMS, L.R.Eswari & chorus, MD is MSV, lyrics by Kannadasan.
- Complete lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/varavu_ettanaa.html
The PPP page mentions that the song doesn't have any tabla or drums, but has just a base guitar, "orE oru base guitar mattum vaiththu full-aa background music muzhudhum rhythmic-aa jingu jingu-nnu" :)
- I think this is another example of a song where Kannadasan has distilled the spirit of the whole film in his lyrics for a single song. The arguments going back and forth between Balaiah and his sons/daughter-in-laws reflect accurately the generation gap, and the setting for the plot.
- Mahendra Raj writes on this song in the Kannadasan thread:
Sometimes back the producers of "Varavu Ettanna Selavu Patthana" invited KB for their 100th day function. KB accepted the invitation and rummaged through his old records and got hold of his scripts written for "Bama Vijayam (1967)". At the function, when he was invited to address, he waved the scripts and said that although written nearly a quarter of a century ago he still cherishes it for sentimental reasons. And then he came to the point. He told kaviarasar that the crux of the story was that of a middle-class family who is not budget conscious. He wanted kaviarasar to pen a suitable comical but philosophical song for this theme. Thus kaviarasar came out with the song "varavu ettana selavu patthana" in simple layman's words. Perhaps this was the begining of the KB-Kannadhasan era where the crux of the story was told in a single song. KB told the audience of the greatness of Kannadhasan and he was also gratified to note that he was invited to attend the celebrations of the same title film which rightly should be credited to kaviarasar.

An excellent comedy film truly depicting the anxiety of a middle class family while being with a film star.
Balaish was the head of the family with 3 sons and their wives; Major Sundarrajan+Sowcar Janaki, Muthuraman+Kanchana and Nagesh+Jayanthi. Besides Rajashree, in the title charater Bhama, I remember Srikanth & M.Bhanumathi also acted in the movie.
The scene which I ever remember is: The 3 ladies spread "Javvarisi vadaam" in the open terrace; on hearing the horn of Bhama' car, gthey becaome so anxious, screaming "Aay Bhamaa vara bhama varadi ayyo Bhama vandhutta....". They do not know how to have a glimpse of the silver-screen star!!! Vadaam being spread in almost all the places, become the villain-gaL for them. They forget all these and just run over the vadaams to see Bhama. One must watch Sowcar's expression..... simply class... she acted in many sobbing roles, but she was equally competent in comedy roles too (other examples are edhir neechal, thillu mullu...).
"varavu ettaNA selavu paththaNa" - TMS had done a fabulous job singing for Balaiah in a different voice; same TMS sang for Balaish's sons Major, Nagesh and Muthuraman too. LRE accompanied him with lots of "thaLukku" in her voice (Listen to her 'maamOi nimmadhi irukkadhu'). She sang for the daughter-in-laws Sowcar Janaki, Kanchana and Jayanthi; PS has also, supposedly, sung this song along with TMS and LRE; but not a single line is heard in her voice :-)
In a TV programme on KB (in yester year "Madras DD"), Nagesh discussed about the shoot of BV. He mentioned that the stars were in very jolly mood while the this song was being taken up. When away from camera, they were very casually putting thaaLam on the pillar or so in tune with the guitar beats. KB's camera crew caught those spots too which were later introduced as clips/bits by KB for the song. The programme showed an immediate clipping wherein Muthuraman putting ThaaLam on a pillar with good noding of his head :-)
I am sure of the other 2 songs
= ANi muththu vAngi vandhEn AvaNi veedhiyilE - PS (Sowcar Janaki), SoolamangaLam Rajalakshmi (Kaanchana), LRE (Jayanthi)
In this song, PS kural is crystal clear.... Listen to her "ammammaaa"
= ninaiththAl sirippu varum - PS (Kaanchana) on slow & LRE (Jayanthi) in fast pace
Other two I just came to know (not heard)
= Aadai maariya raaNi - PS and LRE for whom ??. I saw this note on a CD in Planet M (MG Road, BLR). can anyone confirm?
= kuLu kuLu azhagenna - AL Raghavan and ?? for Nagesh and ??
Good selection bb... thanQ

Bhama Vijayam was re-made in Hindi (Theen Bahuraniya) and Telugu (???) also. The female leads were retained in both the versions. In Kannada, the theme and base story was adopted and moulded differently by Kodlu Ramakrishna. Film was 'Swalpa Adjust MadkoLi ', wherein Anant nag played Balaiah's role while Thara, Chaithali & Dhamini acted as daughter-in-law's.
Something interesting... SN Surender started singing in films when he was a small boy!!!! It seems he was part of children chorus for "Varavu ettaNa" song. Just click this link to know more http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/2001/05/11/stories/0911070d.htm

Subbu,
For the Hindi 'varavu ettaNaa', the makers of the Hindi version of 'Bhaamaa Vijayam' borrowed from Kannadasan and delightfully adapted it as
' aamdani aattaNi, kharchaa rupaiyah, natiijaa tan tan Gopal!!'
I am also reminded of a small controversy involving SS Vasan's son SS Balasubramaniam and KB during the shooting of BV (Telugu) :
It seems SSB said ' One more shot please!' (which was an accepted tradition in Gemini, if anybody (even a light boy!)found a major fault in the shot just okayed by the Director) when he noticed a faulty pronunciation of a word by the comedian who played Nagesh's role. (The word was 'jeetham' meaning salary). KB took offence, said 'Pack up!' and went home. Several years later, KB still kept mentioning his version in interviews which made SSB so upset that he wrote ' There won't be any more reviews of KB's films in Vikatan'. I don't know if he relaxed this later on!

Isn't this film like the first or second movie of KB?

bb-
Manohar Pictures'(Madras) Bhama Vijayam-1967 was the 4th or 5th film of KB:
Neerkkumizhi-1965
Naanal-1965
Major Chandrakanth-1966
Bama Vijayam-1967
Anubavi Raja Anubavi-1967
Bama Vijayam and Anubavi Raja Anubavi ( both 1967,not sure which one came earlier) were the the earliest KB films that had music by MSV and lyrics by Kannadasan.
Btw, the TMS-LRE song for Nagesh-Rajashri is 'Guru guru nagaiyenna kulu kulu mugamennavo'. And 'Aadai maariya paani enna Krishnayya' is not a separate song, it is the beginning of LRE's part of 'Ninaithaal sirippu varum'- her pallavi is 'Ninaithaal sirikka vaippen'
