The aim of this thread is to collect, at one place, interesting
stories, anecdotes, tit-bits etc, related to TFM. A newcomer to
the forum will find this collection very interesting to read. For
example, Ramki mentioned the following story in another thread:
Do you remember the 'vizhiyil vizhundhu' (alaigal oyvadhillai) song?
Andha situation BRkku suddenaaga thondra, VMkku outdoor shootingil irundhu

Annikke song shoot panni mudichittaangalaam.
Folks, please share any such stories, anecdotes and tit-bits that
you know, in this thread. If TFM Group thinks it is sufficiently
interesting, they could even place it in Permanent Topics.

Two days back SUN TV interviewed MD Chandrabose. He mentioned the
following:
* Since the 60's he has been a close friend of Deva's family.. to
the extent that he was considered by Deva's parents as their
eldest son.
* He said he has not worked under anybody as assistant. As a young
lad he was an actor in several drama troupes and picked up classical
music knowledge during "singing while acting". It seems in those days
one had to have a good music knowledge to be an actor. Even if he made a
small error in "sruthi", someone would immediately comeover to him
and say something like... dEy, chinna "ga"vukku badhil nee periya
"ga" pOttu paaduRE..
* He and Deva had a successful Drama Music Troupe called Boses-Deva.
They did music for a number of famous drama troupes such as Manorama,
VGopalakrishnan, and VCGuhanathan.
* It was VCGuhanathan who gave Chandrabose the first chance in a
movie titled "Maharasi". But it seems the movie was discontinued
half way. Then VCGuhanathan gave another chance in the movie,
Udhaya Raham.
* He said it was his bad luck that he and Ilayaraja entered the TFM
scene around the same time. Otherwise he said he would have been much more
famous.
* At the end of the interview, without any prompting, Chandrabose
mentioned that he is very much against copying tunes... (trying to
make a point to his "younger" brother?) He said that he was forced
by the producer of his first movie to lift one of RDBurman's tunes..
and that he had to follow that order though he didn't want to. He
said he hasn't copied any other tune in any of his other movies.

I got reminded of this incident when i saw somebody's posting on SN Surendar.
When SNS had been to coimbatore, in Gandhipuram bus stand ,he saw a kid selling cassettes and one of them was the dialogue of udhaya geetham. It seems SNS told the boy that he's spoken for the hero in the movie. The boy laughed at him and had told "YEn saar kadha vudra ,idhu mohan padam" enru.
I have seen many people mistaking SNS' voice for mohan.
Have any of u heard his original voice.

Shankar: I've actually met Mohan at a programme, in 1989, and what a difference his real voice is. I believe that his popularity went down after he started to speak with his own voice. It's not at all smooth like SN Surendar's, but quite gruff and with a funny accent. He's a really nice bloke though.

geetha,
In one of his first few movies somebody else (or mohan himself ,i donno) had spoken for him.I saw the movie in DD and i had seen a lot of mohan movies with SNS speaking for him bfore that. It sounded so awkward and even after an hour or so, i wasn't comfortable with the voice speaking for mohan.
It was like somebody talking in the BG and mohan cud-chewing ;-))
It seems mohan is playing the lead role and directing a movie.I hope he calls back surendar again.
And another surprise , The MD for the movie is DEVA. Don't u see the downfall of mohan yet another time??

Hi! I sincere request anyone not to take me in the wrong way. This is an excellent place to find out about Tamil Film Music. It has got a lot of information. But, I think that what it needs a little more maturity in the subjects taken to discuss. A lot people are justing making the same threads over and over again(SAME SUBJECT). As a frequent visitor to this site, I find it very annoying to go into a new thread and find issues that have been discussed in other topics. I believe it is time people stopped comparing artists. What I think this site needs is more information than the other silly things. Please don't take me wrong. People may read the words and think I am trying to insult the participants of this forum. It is not at all what I am trying to say. It is just an opinion that I have had for a while now and seem to think that it is about time I said it. Again please take it into consideration. If you don't like what I am saying than please "ORU KAATHALA KEDIDU, MARU KAATHALA VELLIYA VEDIDUNGA".

Shankar:
Watch, 'Maapillai Saar' (with visu). Mohan spoke in his own voice and the movie was a flop too. In 'Mella Thiranthathu Kathavu' he spoke in the five miute or so with his voice. This is where SNS had problem with Mohan.

aruvi:
Chitra was intoduced to Ilaiyaraja by Fazil, the movie director. The song that she sang for the audition (with IR) was a classical piece:
"Endha soughya maninei jabalaala...."
Chitra's first song for IR was a duet with Gangai Amaran:
"Poojakketra poovidhu..."
Hope this info helps.

Fazil has shot 2 climaxes for the movie, in one mohanlal marries Juhi and in another Mammootty gets her to satisfy fans of both the stars.
This info was given in TOI, last sunday.

Dear Friends,
Another tit - bit : In an interview in the film magazine SHOWTIME,Mani Ratnam has said thus :
My recent movies give me a lot of satisfaction, work - wise, but, the main drawback is the Background score in my recent movies - it is here that I badly miss the genius of Ilayaraaja - ARR's music is very very good, but his BGM leaves a lot to be pondered about"
So at last, Mani himself has accepted that IR's BGM is supreme and has no equals.
