Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

Naaz, thank u very much for your comments.
However I must disagree with you. Chitra IMHO has a very sexy and extremely eroticness touch about her voice which I have found in no other singer, yet it is not vulgar. She I feel was the best person for the song. Eventhough, AY is truely a competent singer she lacks that zazoom!!! that Chitra has and which I must confess SP Balasubramaniam also has. Even though I do not understand tamil (being from a hindi speaking family in the Uk)I feel these two singers SPB and Chitra both have this amazing god gifted talent which can also entice listeners who don't even understand tamil. As for their hindi diction...some may say it is not perfect , but If Lucianao Pavarotti sang in English and not Italian would you criticise him, no- ofcourse not! Enjoy the expressions and emotions that the voice generates !
I personally feel SPB and Chitra should sing more hindi songs.....anD i FEEL IT IS TALENTED MUSIC DIRECTORS LIKE SHANKAR EHSSAN LOY, RAHMAN WHO CAN GET THE BEST OUT OF THEM.

Ehsan,
Thanks for the response to my posting.
Yes, 'Hey Ram' is just one example. Did you check out the background score of 'Lajja' and 'Anjali' (80's film by Mani Ratnam)? When you ask Srinivasa Murthy for IR's CDs, ask him specifically about the late 70's and 80's music. You will find out why he was way ahead of his times. Apart from the ones mentioned by 'x', buy these 2 early 80s film albums, called 'Nenjathai Killathey' and 'Eera vizhi kAviyangaL'.
Happy listening!
How was it scoring a different kind of music for a David Dhawan film, which typically do not boast of good music, but for some popular 'item' numbers with silly lyrics like 'Teri Naani mari toh main kya karoon'?
I thought the title song of 'Ek Aur Ek Gyarah' can never be identified with that genre. How has the audience/ producer response been?

Vaathiyaar,
Eshaan is matured enough to decide for himself. You must remember that not everybody can be affected so easily like you or get over-emotional like you when people bring out the truth.

I hope you are not calling Ehsaan immature bacause he did not accept that IR is the greatest. :)
Anyway, I would like to see him back here, so let us stop the digression. I hope all hard cores woould follow suit too.

Ehsaan,
We were preparing Bumbro for an upcoming light music programme here in the U.S and I found that I couldn't hear any chords or bass throughout this song. Did you guys choose not to use a rhythm and bass guitar at all for this song? Also, is there a particular reason you structured the stanzas differently through out the song? We had a brief rehearsal last weekend and every loved this number. Hopefully, we can do justice to it while performing live!

Ehsaan, what is your opinion of promoting film music with shows like Rahman does a la Michael Jackson. even, the composers himself dancing etc..? is it possible or do you think India will see spice girls or NSync type representation of composer'
Plus, what do you think is needed for Indian film music to be accepted by non-Indians like English pop albums. I know language is not an issue for good music to sell anywhere.
Among the great veterans, whom do you think was the strongest in melody? My favorite Shankar-Jaikishen(most strong melody I've heard) or RDB or LP or KAnandji or Bappi Lahiri or others? Who do you think would employ gimmicks or pattern tunes and still succeeded?
Do you enjoy Celine Dion or Whitney Houston type R&B/Soul music - I like them, streches the voices much more and more scope for difficult melody.... Instead of songless movies, these type of ideas should be experimented don't u think and move away from catchy tunes?

Hi Ehsaan,
I have all along been thinking that the back ground score for Alavanthaan was done by the Late Mahesh. But here people keep saying that they liked ur efforts in the BGM of Alavanthaan.
Can u clear my confusion?

Hi Atithi Bhumbro doesnt have too much of a chord structure or backing except for the percussion because we wanted to keep the raw folk element in the songs. The stanzas were also structured differently because we didnt want to follow the pallavi / charnam or antra / mukhda kind fo pattern.Best of luck with the show !!
The background score was done by the late Mahesh not by us.

Hi Ehsaan,
I am really surprised by ur prompt response. And thanks for clearing that doubt.
I wish to point our one small bit I luv from Alavanthaan. The sequence when the song "Kadal Paadi, Mirugam Paadi" mixes with the Aalavanthaan~~~~ humming something lime He~~He~~He~~He, it was simply out of the world.
Keep up the good work.

Ehsaan,
Thanks for your prompt response! I'll make sure our MC mentions how helpful and friendly you guys are out here! By the way, we are playing the song in the scale of F Major and we took the liberty of adding simple chords (mostly just F, C, and C7, with a Bbm and Bb dim in the third stanza where I think you've used a warm pad-like tone) as we felt it would be helpful to the singer and after all, we can't reproduce the original recording quality on stage and don't want to sound empty :-)) We'll turn down the bass and rhythm guitar and try to maintain the essence of the song as far as possible! Thanks again for your input and wishes! We hope to do many more hits from your movies in the future!

Ehsaan:
Can you please detail on some song which u have written some unusual progressions for ? Also can you explain the technique and the details of how you fix some unconventional chords for your songs ? I mean apart from the regular minor / major or sevenths, do you use a lot of sus,dim,6ths,9ths,11ths,13ths etc..May be you can do an analysis on Africa kaatupuli if u are free.
This will give a lot of insight into beginners like me to understand how progressions are built by composers.

Ehsaan - Great 2 C U here.
What is your favourite Ragam - in terms of listening or composing? Did you learn Indian Classical? Hindustani or Carnatic?
For example, Lois Banks is a huge fan of Panthuvarali and Shankar M likes Kalyani, Kamboji, Thodi and the heavy ones a lot!
Keep up the excellent work!

Hi MS I think to begin with it is important to have a knowledge of harmony and chord construction. Beyond that it really is how imaginitive you are with your usage of chords. Luckily for us both Loy and I have a strong sense of harmony which gives us a bit of an edge. ARR has a great sense of harmony too !!!!In answer to your question An my favorite raagas would be ( I only know the Hindustani names ) Yaman , Bhairavi , Bhim Pallasi , Desh and Bhoop.

Hi MS I think an analysis of our song Kaisi Hai Yeh Rut from Dil Chahta Hai would be more apt for any kind of harmonic analysis. The Africa Katpuli song is pretty basic and straight foward harmonically speaking excpet for the second music interlude when it goes to a minor key.
