Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

Hello Eshaan,
Glad to see you participating this in this forum... I would like to recommend some of IR's great albums for you. Following are some of his best.
1. Johny -- has 5 great songs.
2. Raja Parvai -- Listen to andhi mazhai, azhage azhagu and a violin instrumental, composed by IR and played by V.S.Narasimhan
3. Nizhalgal -- All songs
4. Salangai oli -- All songs
5. Punnagai Mannan -- All songs. A perfect example of how to compose a song for the given situation.
6. Sindhu Bhairavi -- All songs. Watch the movie, if you can just for the brilliant BGM
7. Mouna Raagam -- Great songs; great BGM
8. Panneer Pushpangal -- Aanandha raagam, poondhalir aada.
9. IR's non-filmy albums 'Nothing but wind'
and 'How to name it'.
These some just a few of the greatest old melodies of IR. There are hundreds of more movies from Tamil alone. Please listen to them and tell us what you think.
btw, Shankar mahadevan is a close friend of yours, right? Hasn't he mentioned anything about IR to you?? Just curious..

Ehsaan...one of ur mates is a tamil and telegu linguist...Shankar Mahadevan...ask him!!:)
I am sure he will recommend a few of Ilayaraja's classics.
By the way do you sing much yourself!
Without putting you in a difficult position who do you rate as one of the best playback singers both in south and North India....come on be honest!

Hi Karan Shankar is even more forgetfull of names of films . The next time I am in Chennai I will ask my good friend Mr. Srinivas Murthy to recommend soem cd's to me. Most of the music shops in Bombay dont really stock Tamil music except for the classical stuff. I dont sing much myself except for composing purposes. I think my favorite singers would be Chitra , Mahalaxmi , Sujatha , Shankar , Hariharan , SPB , Shaan

This is Ehsaan thread, why do we bring IR here north-south issues, etc? Region to region there will be differences always. Tell me if we listen to Telugu or Malayalam songs (or even care to know the type of great film songs that come from there )or do not laugh when they speak in their own tongues. Cut the crap, I say. Humans are all inherently biased and irrational people tryin to appear civilized to one another. All pretensions. The genuine spirit of tolerance and appreciation comes only when we can simply want to learn and seek out the truth, the best, the unknown justfor the sake of learning new things and seeing different people in a favorable light. I am biased towards Bombay crowd, i think they are some perverted, egotistic crap, so also malayalees (even worse than mangaloreans) but the music and movies and other stuff is simply very good. It is because i did not grow up in these places and i have relatives born brought there who are the most crap crap can get. Cultures, tastes, traditions, physiological looks etc.. change every few thousand square miles, so just push IR down every body' throat. My greatest hero is IR but that is because I grew up in Chennai, if in Bombay I would not care much...
Mr. Ehsaan this is a very enthusiastic crowd here, and they make mistakes like all fanatics, fortunately music does not inspire arms!!!!!

I did not mean any offense to Peter Pan (let us not overreact to just one instance) or others. Let us develop understanding of things of why IR is not appreciated in other countries or north India, etc.. First, in south India let us find out if we appreciate arts from other south Indian states on a more broader scale.
The better things other than forcing Ehsaanji about IR, it would be great to know how much Ehsaan appreciates his favorites and why, something that he can recommend us etc...
I have only listened to Abhay songs, I find them stylish and classy, the background score impeccable, something the Bombay industry can learn from SEL. Since I spend all my time on IR, I don't spend $$ on other composer' music, including MSV' too, because I don't go for repeat listen. I do want to get hold of SEL' releases, as I said they sound non-Hindi and polished, original ideas, but creativity la IR is not there for me to go for a repeat listen. Even if they are melodious as RDB or SJaikishen, I will enjoy 3 or 4 times (as I have many of thier tapes too I have not touched in ages collecting dust) But that is what IR fans are made of, totally dissolved in the music, no escape for us ;---)
Ehsaanji, please continue and set new standards in orchestration, ideas. My advice, always put in the effort to be original and innovative, then only u can inspire new generations of composers to reach greater heights at the international level, like if I might add, how MSV gave birth to IR' originality and he in turn brought out ARR to go for his Bombay Dreams!!!!

"Hi Kiru what you hear is a combination of shaker and tamborine , Loy loves these two percussion instruments so does Shankar because of the pace it gives a song. I think we should consciously stop using those. "
ha..I meant shakers but wrote rattle..must be the influence of my little son :) Thanks Ehsaan. If you stop using them, I am sure it will give a classic touch to your songs, IMHO.
BTW, I heard Armaan on realaudio and the sound engineering was really good. Are you guys using 24bit/96KHz recording ? Any plans to go to DSD recording/mixing equipment. Are you using high quality interconnects/cables in the recording studio ? Any tube mic preamps ? Would love to hear your interest in getting good sound.
I now have a DVD/SACD player. SACD (super audio cd) seem to have much more dynamic range and are as transparent as a good LP turntable (i have this too).

kiru,
can you really make out the difference between 96khz and 48khz recordings or is it just a psychological effect?

John,
I do have CDs (ofcourse), 24bit/96Khz (played through DVD player), SACDs and LPs. Of these, I like the LPs best. 24bit/96Khz and SACD come next. If the CD recording is done very well, it is difficult to spot the difference, but it is surely there. But one of the 24bit/96Kz recording I have sounds like a master tape (just as the ad for this DVD says). Theoretically, there should not be any difference, but it does make a difference. I dont think, I am imagining this !!

Hi again Ehsaan.
I would most appreciate it if you could listen to a very recent tamil composition if u get the time.
The song:Mun Puniya
Film:Nandhaa
Singer:SP Balasubramniam
Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja(YSR)son of Ilayaraja.
I would be most intereted to hear your most respected view on it.
No hurry take your time, but please do!

Karan -
I heard your rave about the song from Armaan, and was immediately curious to give it a listen. I did.
Do you really think that it deserves such a gushing testimonial? The song is at most "hindish," and Chitra still does not know how to nuance and express in Hindi (compare her "hindi" with AY "hindi" in "Mehndi Hai Rachnewali" and you will see that Chitra has a long, long way to go before she qualifies as a "hindi" singer - never mind that she won a "national" award for another badly pronounced hindi song.)
I am amazed as to how such pedestrian stuff is instantly pedestalised.
I guess, one can only insist on Perfection in singing/language, when one really speaks/knows the language in its formal/literary light. It is this huge absence that newbe MDs capitalise on. And one can't even say that they (the MDs) should know better. For, by all accounts, it seems that they are in the same "let's-keep-it-afloat" boat.

Ehsaan:
Great to see you are a Sadhana fan! Me too :-)
Sadhana's voice is pure and soothing, reminding one of the golden oldies of P Suseela or Lata. I haven't heard another voice as mesmerisingly melodious as Sadhana's from any other singer over the past 20-25 years. I once had the golden opportunity of listening to Sadhana render a beautiful classical piece in a live concert. She began with a wonderful sargam that lasted for 1-1.5 minutes without a breathing gap and she seamlessly blended that with a soul-stirringly sweet aalaap. Thereafter she recited the words of the piece and the tabla set in as well - "garaj garaj aayo kaare badaraa". Her meends on the word "kaare..." were captivating. And the sprightly and elegant taans that she placed at he most unconventional places were so enchanting. IMO, she is one highly under-utlised singer of modern times. If utilised properly, she will surely secure a place in the list of the two legendary singers I have mentioned.
Off late, her talents have been exploited in regional films and private albums. She has become Ilayaraaja's new favourite (which is an achievement!). Hope you (along with Shankar and Loy) will create something wonderful for her in the future!
Ciao.

Hi Ehsaan,
First thanks for participating and the wonderful music DCH.
Can you explain how the three of you got together to make music?
Have you ever thought about making music by yourself? Does the thought of sharing the credit ever bother you at all?
