  SV...minsara kanna from padayappa is a very good attempt by ARR to use the ragam "Vasantha"...good work by rehman.

  Minsara kanna is indeed 'vasantha'...great composition by ARR...
  great thing abt rehman is the way he mixes raagas...
  for example...
  narumugaye song from iruvar is a superb mix of gambeeranattai and nattai...
  The male portion is in Naatai, while the female portion is in Ghambeera Naatai....

  minsaara kanna also appears to follow HamsaNandhi protocol.
  
  2) Take the song Narumugaiye.
  it starts like Ga Ma Ga Ma Paaa Ma

  Ga Ma Ga Ma Pa Sa Ni Ma Ga
  (alright alll GNaatai)
  But the way the pallavi ends "Kottapoiga aadiyaval NEEEYA"

  U dont need to split gambeera naatai and naattai prayogams. If u can find the pattern of naattai, it can be deemd to be in naattai.

  Are there raagams that fit a particular musical instrument? In other words, can we say "shankarabharanam sounds especially good on the piano, sindhu bhairavi is made for the violin and abheri for the flute" etc.?

  There are some ragas which sound "great" in some intruments for sure. But, it is not a fact ShankarabaraNam sounds great in piano. In fact, the real ida is that, shankarabaraNam is the ragam that can be best played in piano. Or rather that may be the best sounding raga in piano since the WCM' smajor scales are nonthing but SB. Now coming back to the query of some ragas sounding "great" in specific instruments : to me, folk tunes sound great in violin (kiLikkaNNi) and punnaagavaraaLi sounds great in sax (listen to Kadri), aahir bhairav, shivaranjani and slightly "sad / romantic" ragas sound great in flute and some gambeera ragas like kaambOdhi sound great in veeNa. Of course there is another one called the "voice" :-) which is great for devotionals like "shree ranga pura vihaara". But this is just "my" feeling.

  Thanks for the clarification IR. When I listened to the song, I felt Kalyani, but when SJ sings the swara in the middle of the song, the M and N sounded bit different. Anyway, I am not so good at Carnatic and I am keen to watch/participate in the subsequent discussions as I find this thread interesting.

  other yaman kalyani number
  varaaga nadhi karai ooram - Sangamam.

  bb - they are not related as such - but the notes in Darbaari Kaanada and the notes in Shanmugapriya (not the scale - just the individual notes that each of those 2 ragas take) are similar except the "madhyamam" note. That is probably why you get a "similar feel". Other than that there is no relationship. Infact Darbaari kaanada has a totally zig zag (vakra) scale while Shanmugapriya is a melakartha raga.

  prabhu - I dont think there is any/much of a difference between the two. I believe they are used interchangeably. For example, Some people prefer to say, Krishna nee Begaane is set in Mishra Yaman while most people would say it is composed in Yamuna KalyaNi!

  is there any link between the following two songs atleast in their pallavis?
  
  1) Devanin kovil FROM Aruvadai NaaL
  2) Vennilave Vennilavae FROM Minsaara kanavu
  
  When i sing the pallavi of Devanin kovil after the first stanza I could seamlessly sing indha bhoologaththil yaarum parkummunnae as next stanza of pallavi.
  
  Is it worthy doubt or am I just struck with another illusion :-)
