Mr Naattu aamai, Fund raising is always a great thing. It is definitely honorable for a noble cause. But there is a subtle difference between fundraising and begging. There is something called 'self-respect' involved. I am only exposing the difference.

I was in the NY program this week end. He looked like a very simple and friendly person ( compared to T.V.Gopalakrihshan, with his pattu jippa and jewels in all possible body parts). There is no way a starnger could have realized, who he is by his apperance and his stage presence.
I could only catch up last few minutes of his speech. But it looked to me it came right from his heart.
I have big issue with the way it is organized though. I could not understand why the organizers subjected IR to the humiliation of standing and receiving the fund as if he is a bride groom in a marriage hall with out a bride or as the poor guest receiving a cotton saree in a function. It is too humble for his calibre to accept that and still he did not have any qualms doing so, did not appear so from the audience point of view.
Organizers could have chosen a different way to do that.
Also, the organizers pushing for minium $100 donation for coming to stage is bit way off. There are so many people in the audience including yours truly was taken aback with the comment. There are so many people out there, despite their questions about the project and the way its finance has been managed so far, would have loved the oppurtunity to get close to him. There should have been a brief question and answer session for the audience to get involved and find out more about the project than from the prepared speech from the organizers.
Overall I got a pleasant experience seeing one of my heros in person. This once in a life time experience will stay with me for ever.
Thanks

SSSSA,
Like to know, whether as a organizer what you think of my comments on the show?. Do you think that IR was humilated in standing there receiving the money and also pushing for $100 dollars from everybody?

Dear STT,
Thanks. You must have also noticed that i went and requested the organizer about this and his publicly announced [in the mike] reply that the people there are like a family etc, etc. You call it a humiliation; others call it a privilege and a "life-time-opportunity-not-to-be-missed" to have a moment with IIR. As long as IIR was not mobbed and and the crowd did not misbehave, it is Ok!
I am people's person and a fan basically and never ever forget the feelings of a fan even if I am at the other end for a brief time!
BTW, your question implies as if IIR was asking for $100 which HE DID NOT as you know. You meant the organizer but the querry appeared to imply otherwise and you know how people will jump at this swiftly!!
YIA!!

I never said that IR was asking for $100. It is the one of the organiser with the mike in his hand. I never thought that was a demand from IR. It is more do with the organiser trying to keep the promise of delivering $100,000. But it was not in good taste. That is my take on that.
To have a moment with IR should have been done in a different way. There was not a big crowd, so one on with IR might not have been difficult thing to do.

Sorry, IR has left already, to start on the "TIS" recording soon.
If we are lucky, we might plan for releasing the CD here in USA in a big way in his presence, let us hope for the best

Thanks to Mr. Shankar of NC. for writing about our Raja's visit to
Cary, NC. on May 19th, 2004. I was one of the people who had that
rare opportunity to see him, meet him, talk to him and be blessed by
him while he was at NC.
Before I start writing this, I had lot of things going on in my mind
like whether I should write this or keep it to myself. As our Raja
even said, "Blowing my own trumpet…" Should I have to blow my own
trumpet? At that time the thing that came in to my mind was his
introductory speech in one of his greatest albums "Geethanjali". His
speech goes something like this… "..Idhil ivan indha aanmavai karaya
vitirukiran enbadhe ore oru jeevanavadhu yennumanal naan jenmam
eduthadhan payanai adaindhdhaga enni magizhven…" (Pl. forgive if my
words are in any way different). Dear friends, should I have to
mention further, what is on my mind!
Man…it was a day in my life to remember forever and ever. What a
blessing it was!
I had to drive from Atlanta, GA. on May the 18th for 6-7 hours. I
already got approval for a couple of days of vacation from work. Dr.
Sankar Kumar told me over the phone that I could come one day in
advance so that when our Raja comes on the next morning we can all go
and receive him at the airport. Dr. Sankar explained about our
Raja's program agenda and his place of stay. I was just listening
and was so excited. And that was not the peak of my excitement. It
was even more than an excitement when he said, "When you arrive here
you don't need to stay at any hotel. Our Raja will stay at my
residence where you can also stay". I was speechless and I don't know
how I can still thank him for that. I am going to stay with our Raja
in the same house! What a blessing! Dr. Sankar didn't care when I
told him that I would arrive at midnight, as I didn't want to bother
him when I reached there.
On May 18th, I was planning to start at least around 6.00 p.m. I was
almost crying when I couldn't start as I planned because a few things
came in the middle. Finally when I started, it was 11:30 p.m.! I
thought I might not be able to make it in on time the next morning,
so that I could go with Dr. Sankar and others to receive him at the
airport. At around 7.00 a.m. the next day, on my way after napping
for a few hours, I called Dr. Sankar for the status. He told me not
to worry about the delay, as our Raja will be arriving only at 1
p.m. I was so happy and felt lucky that I could still go to the
airport to receive him.
Finally, I reached Dr. Sankar's residence at around 8.00 a.m. and
everyone was kind and affectionate. I was getting ready for that
wonderful moment to go to the airport. It was around 12:30 p.m. We
left the house and reached the airport within fifteen minutes. On
the way there we picked up three more friends.
At about 1.00 p.m. when the plane arrived, we started looking for our
Raja as we saw people coming out of the gate. And then he comes…he
was suddenly there looking at us with his glittering eyes with a very
gentle smile on his face. Everyone must have felt at that moment
that he looked at each of them individually. What a sight to
remember! As soon as he came near us, everyone touched his feet.
That happened automatically. When I touched his feet, he touched my
back. What can I tell about that moment…that was everything…I just
told my name. He smiled back and nodded kindly. Andha Karunai
Vizhigal…andru parkkhum bakkyam enakku kidaithdhu…"
We started to drive back home. On our way, whatever he spoke was
very gentle and he was also concerned bout the very low percentage of
people who are voting in our country. "Ethanai periaya manidharundan
amarndhu sellum sandharpam…!"
When we arrived at the house, he sat on a chair and more people were
suddenly filling the house. There were around seven to eight people
in total. We all sat down on the floor, as the number of people,
were more than the number of chairs. He felt a little uncomfortable
to see us sitting on the floor and said, "Nanum kooda kizhaye
utkarndhuralam pola irukku…" We all told him to sit on the chair
itself and he smiled and agreed.
Then there was silence for a few seconds. One of our friends broke
the silence by sharing his thoughts about the increase in the number
of notes in the music. He replied by saying that every note is from
the basic seven swaras. He also mentioned about the greatness of our
Indian classical music. And the discussion went on and on (I don't
know technically much about music…probably one of our friends can
write in details about when he mentioned the role of "Aartha shruti"
in Indian and Western classical). It was unforgettable when he
mentioned the uniqueness or importance of our motherland and the
great people that came from that part of the earth. He also
mentioned how rich the soil of our great country is. He pointed out
like how it gives a unique fragrance to any kind of flower that grows
there. He greatly appreciated various "Mahaans" and their path, and
wondered where else in the world it is like that.
Dr. Sankar's family members prepared a wonderful lunch, and we were
all invited to dine with our Raja. What an opportunity to eat with
him! We were seven people in total at the table.
After lunch he spoke a little bit about his experience in Italy where
he finished a concert the previous week. He also mentioned that a
DVD would be made of that concert. I hope we will all have the
opportunity to watch it soon. From his explanation, we all
understood that his concert reflected the culture of our country in
various periods of time, featuring the lives of women. He also
mentioned that an Italian was following up with him for the past four
to five years to have him do this concert after hearing one of our
Raja's songs.
