Vanakaththukuriya Saravananae! -
"My Darling Indha Mayakkam, Good Morning Sollum Varaikkum..."
Part lullaby part lascivious (but not lewd) and wholly seductive. Thanks for this soft, dreamy moment at the very beginning of my day...from here on it will go down "swinging"ly !:-)

Lyrics are quintessential-Vali. When he's bad, no one's worse. Only saving grace, TMS didn't sing this. When the clairvoyant Sridevi decides to lie about events, it gives way to some hilarious scenes especially about a bridge blowing up. Other than that a strange movie.

Song of the Day: vandha naaL mudhal from paava mannippu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/vandhanaal.rm
- Sung by TMS. Music by MSV/TKR. Lyrics by Kannadasan. This film has several outstanding numbers, like 'aththaan en aththaan', 'kaalangaLil avaL vasantham' and 'ellOrum koNdaaduvOm' (all featured in SOTD earlier).
- The song has several interesting things. First off, the beautiful lyrics by Kannadasan. In two lines, he profoundly conveys the jist of the song:
manidhan maaRivittaan
madhaththil ERivittaan.
Excellent wordplay here. It sounds like 'maraththil ERivittaan', which in itself suggests man going back in evolution.
Second is the laid back nonchalant singing of TMS. Gives us the feeling that the singer is someone who is looking at the big picture from the point of view of an outsider. The whistling that accompanies his singing also adds to the laid back nature of the song.
Third, check out the violin interlude, presumably by T.K.Ramamoorthy.
- Lyrics in Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 7:Vingyaana/Naveena Karuthoottum Paadalgal thread: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/15482.18198.21.25.09.htm
- Part of an article by Randor Guy on paava mannippu:
The 1960's was an exciting period in the history of Tamil Cinema Business conditions were good and all set to fly into boom-sphere and as the decade danced along an increasing number of fims were being made.
The film "Pava Mannipu" had melodious music which contributed in abundant measure to the sucess of the movie. Meaningful lyrics in simple easily understandable Tamil penned by Kannadasan were set to soul filling music, contributed by Viswanathan-Ramamurthy.
M.S.Viswanathan and T.K.Ramamurthy who begun composing music as a team for films some years earlier shot to the top of the heap during 1960, when almost every song in Pava Mannipu became a hit number. Sung by T.M. Soundararajan, P.Susila, and P.B. Srinivas the songs were hummed by almost everybody. "Vanda Naal Muthal..", "Kalangalil Aval Vasantham...", "Aththan Ennathan...", "Palirukum Pazamirukum...",... all these songs proved a rage and joined the list of all-time hit tunes of Tamil cinema. Besides the melodious tunes, meaningful lyrics and facile rendering by the behind-the-scene play back singers, what attracted people was the orchestration, the arrangement of musical instruments and the excellent manner in which the composers blended them all together. It was facinatingly melodious, extremely pleasing to listerner's ears, something of a novelty in Tamil cinema.
The accordion, piccolo, melodion, xylophone, tuba, and many new percusion instruments - Viswanathan-Ramamurthy used them all. The overall impact was highly impressive and everybody was anxiuos to know who the music makers were and almost over-night the twosome found themselves famous starts in their own right. Producers and film-makers made a bee-line to their doors. Movie posters carried their names in large letters in a prominent position. For a period the two were a force in Tamil cinema and positive selling points in the marketing of a movie.

VJ does a great job on English pronounciation, for "Sure".A flowing silky tune and VJ,PJ,MSV have tried to outdo one another.Sridev's song has come a month late,in Maasi maatham.
BB,you should have featured the GKV version too. That would highlight MSV-TKR's choice of singers to suit the mood of the song.Pava Mannippu is one among the "complete" tamil movies..a nice script, good story, brilliant acting by Sivaji,MRR,Savithri and nicely supported by GG,Devika,MVR apart from the highlights already mentioned.

Hi,
Fabulous song and great singing by TMS. In fact the songs from Paava Mannippu and Paalum Pazhamum on Radio Ceylon Asia service were the films that generated my interest in TFM when I was around four or five years old. Wonderful musical interludes by the great duo of VR in the songs of these movies can never be forgotten. BTW can you feature the 'Alukkoru Veedu' duet by PBS and PS, Anbumanam Kaninda Pinne Acham Thevaiya, next in SOTD. VR have shown what a simple instrument like Sarangi, generally used for 'azhugai' scenes, can achieve even when used for a love song.

wow.. thats a great song.. one of my fav's of nasal TMS.. TMS did sound a lot different in melodious songs like this one and 'ponnai virumbum boomiyile'... can someone throw some light on other songs in the movie.. i guess 'ellarum kondaduvom' was from the same movie..

One of the true classic tfm songs. The picturisation is outstanding, Sivaji, cycling and whistling without a care - great tfm moment.
As OISG mentioned you should have also included GKV's very disturbing and soulful version. Great movie-great music.

bb: Very appropriate for India today! The movie was about a Hindu brought up as a Muslim falling in love with a Hindu. There was no religious strife in those days, only language strife in Bangalore! I think the movie was released in 1961 when they were boycotting Tamil movies in Bangalore!

A true classic in every sense!
Nature, even in all its varied facets, and over the centuries hasn’t strayed from its benevolence. Man has evolved, but to what? Kannadasan raises disturbing queries that assume greater relevance in today’s world. Simple, yet incisive ruminations on man’s numerous hypocrisies, progressing to unhurried thoughts on science, religion & philosophy complete the soulful soliloquy.
Sivaji in the role of the Good Samaritan Rahim, leisurely peddling along a lonely road. Savitri is shown towards the end walking hurriedly with an intention of ending her unhappy existence. The song ends as Sivaji rushes just in time to foil her bid.
Digression: This song, and the rescue scene find place in Balumahendra’s Moodupani. Banuchandar & Shobha come to a deserted theater showing Paava Manippu , to cosily cuddle in a darkened corner! Of course, Pratap is also there.
Budhdha Pictures’ Paava Manippu (released on 16.3.1961) enjoyed a long successful run wherever it was released. (Shanthi, Sri Krishna & Roxy theaters in Chennai). MR Radha, as usual stole the show (who can forget his taunting ‘Vaayya Jamesu’, and SV Subbiah’s restrained response!)
Two other songs that haven’t found mention so far: 'Silar siripaar silar azhuvaar (TMS), and ‘Saaya vetti thalaiyile katti’ (TMS, Jamunarani & chorus). I doubt if Jamunarani’s name found mention in the titles, though her inimitable voice is definitely heard in the song.
Some other interesting trivia:
·Paava Manippu was based on a short sketch that Chandrababu had narrated to Bhimsingh. Bhimsingh developed the story further and titled it tentatively as ‘Abdulla’. Later the entire scenario changed when AVM, along with some other financiers, evinced interest in the story. In view of the enhanced budget, the screenplay was further worked upon to fit in a galaxy of stars.
·Surprisingly, though TMS had sung ‘Silar siripaar’, for ‘Vandha naal mudhal’, he wasn’t MSV’s first choice! TA Mothi was first envisaged for this song. It struck MSV suddenly to ask TMS if he thought he could sing this song too, and TMS self-confident, as always, assured him that he could. And he proved himself triumphantly.
·‘Edhanai kandaan, madhangalai padaithaan’ was the line originally written by Kannadasan, and recorded. The censors took objection to it, and TMS had to sing it again as ‘Edhanai kandaan, panam thanai padaithaan’- this was the version heard on screen, and most of the CDs/ tapes too feature this version. Some records originally made, however retained the line ‘madhangalai padaithaan’. After a long search for this original version, I finally got it in Virudunagar!
