Nice composition in bowli (?? - I hear "ni" in the arohana!). I liked the contrast between the gentleness and violence of the wind that you tried to bring in this piece. Good job.

Hi all,
Hope somebody (experts) can answer my q.
I am pretty much a novice to audio editing. I was wondering, will it be possible to improve the quality of mp3 song (convert to wav) and then edit using programs like cool edit or sound forge?
I am interested in getting something like:
mono to stereo?
or send it to different channels like dolby 5.1?
is it possible?
Thanks in advance.
rgds,
bala

Aditya,
Listened to your "Wind" composition. Absolutely pleasing one!!! Enjoyed it from start to finish!!!
Thanks for your feedback on Jay's song.
Kaumudi,
Thanks to you too. Glad to know the song put you in a serene mood and that you liked the humming. It was a conscious decision to make the vocal rendition simple and soothing.. That's Jay's style, i guess. The lyrics were written for the tune...

Sorry I'm late.
Aditya..yes, this song is in the same raagam/scale as Pani Thirai. got started on this one while working on that :) the "sticky keys" syndrome as its called :) I'm not clear about the pitch difference you talked about in the male singer. I didnt find it that glaring as to be disturbing.
I'm yet to listen to "Wind".
Kaumudi..as Radhika said, the lyrics were written to the tune. the ending part..hmm..I think you might have a point there. something to consider for my next song :)
Sridhar..very good suggestion. ideas again!
Overall, I didnt want too much of a classical touch..I kept it straight and popish.

Aditya,
So many well connected ideas. Great work! Toward the end, I lost my attention. Lot of twist & turns and well connected.

Aditya,
Do you know that there is a song by John Denver, which has lyrics like 'wind is my friend, wind is the driving force...'(which I found in your note on your work too)? I can't remember the title of the song though.
I liked the tune, but I wasn't sure if it reminded me of anything that associates with wind. I felt that the shift to left and right headphones of the strings was a little overdone and was a distraction. The conception of the tune had a good range with some surprising variations and improvisations(one almost even touched 'rock and roll'!). It was nice to listen to it when I was on my nerves end on a bug issue !

Aditya,
I couldn’t resist the temptation of finding the song of John Denver I was talking about. I googled and found only the lyrics to it. The song is titled ‘wind song’ from the album ‘Annie’s song’. I make a note of it since Denver excelled in creating the moods of nature in many of his songs. You might probably like to hear them as a learning process.
“The wind is the whisper of our mother the earth
The wind is the hand of our father the sky
The wind watches over our struggles and pleasures
The wind is the goddess who first learned to fly
The wind is the bearer of bad and good tidings
The weaver of darkness, the bringer of dawn
The wind gives the rain, then builds us a rainbow
The wind is the singer who sang the first song
The wind is a twister of anger and warning
The wind brings the fragrance of freshly mown hay
The wind is a racer, a wild stallion running
The sweet taste of love on a slow summer’s day”

Hello Friends and Kaumudi, MS, Radhika, Sridhar, Da Vinci: first of all thanks for your appreciation and patience with my wind theme...
Sridhar, thanks for recognizing the random twists and turns in the theme and appreciating the way they were connected together.
Da Vinci: I am glad atleast musically the theme has moved you...I don't know about this song or john denver. Thanks for introducing this song and the artist...i am sure i will find something to learn.
Interesting side note about this composition...
it was requested by mom's little girl student and suggested raaga too as she was learning "Manasa Etulorthune" keerthanai - Sri Thyagaraja swamy's composition in malayamaarutham. This raaga has a feel of wind in it and i started composing this theme...my inspiration for this composition goes deeply emotional and tied up to my home, parents and cultural background along with my taste of experimentation...
Let's see how the wind is blowing on others...
Regards,
Aditya

Listened to your wind music. First of all, excellent build up into a long movement and a creating a nice evening mood with Malayamarutham.
Two things I like very much about this:
1. It demonstrates your ability to create related new sections and come back to the main theme smoothly.
2. It shows your ability to build arrangements from scratch - rather than using loops and grooves, you create an arrangement then and there where it is required by creating a bassline, a shaker, a kick drum touch that is appropriate. Excellent! Srikanth's works show such nice intricate little touches.
Both of these boil down to one word: development of a musical seed.
Here are the other plus points I heard:
Very strong main pallavi (theme): The syncopated motif (da-da-Daadadaa) is the interesting seed and the single line immediately
spreads the raga and the mood well done.
I like the bubbling flute echos very much.
Here are the improvement areas:
I did not find a strong counter theme that would then allow you further developement of these. The accordion theme that comes midway is a nice candidate for a counter theme. you can consider strengthening it and making it more prominent. In other words, instead of returning to your main theme. You return to theme and you return to counter theme.
Some minor details:
1. the panning of the introductory arpeggio is good because it shows swaying of the wind, but to keep it a little less distracting, you can pan from midway instead of end to end. In midi terms, from say, 35 to 85 instead of 0 to 128 ;) That way it becomes a bit more subtle and hence more effective in a composition like this.
2. the guitar melody is very weak and hesitant, you need to rework it.
Good job,
rjay

For your reference, there are few Ilayaraja masterpieces in Malayamarutham worth studying - to see how he has approached it too, if you are interested: 1. Thendral ennai muthamittadhu from Nadhiyai thedi vandha kadal,
2. Kanmani nee varakkaathirundhen from Thendralae ennai thodu, 3. Kodi Inbam meni thannil paynthadammama (an ignored gem!)
As I wrote that I realized,
(a) The first two songs have thendral - 'soft southern breeze' association!
(b) Everytime I listen to Ilayaraja songs I end up studying them and not making my own music!

Hi,
I did some cut & paste (not 'compose') on top of my original version of Sindhipoagum (which only had the drum beat). I used royalty free loops. Pls let me know how is my 'ottu velai'.

interesting and useful observation.
IRs song Thendral ennai muthamittadu has more shades of valachi and little bowli to it ?! may be i am wrong any the difference between valachi and malayamarutham is very little 'nishadam' if ia am right
carnatic expert might correct me
