What a nice movie! When all hopes of seeingat least one decent Tamil movie, this comes as a fresh breeze! I am sure everyone who has seen this movie would have been able to relate to at least one scene or incident with their lives. The last scene-wedding reception- Cheran steals the show! Hats off to him! I am glad to hear it is doing well in Tamilnadu. Or otherwise, I would not have excused the movie-goers! Not a single obscene scene in the entire movie and no thrust comedy scenes! Perfect for family viewing! "sillarasik kaasukaLai keezhE pOda veNdaam!"

'MNJ' refers to the girls who came in RK's life after he became an adult but this is from the school days. That's a major difference.

SSS not really..the film shows yonger rajkapoors(played by rishi kapoor) crush on his teacher(simi grewal) The final scene in MNJ will show all the ladies the hero had a crush or loved(looks like autograph also has a similar ending)

"Ovvoru Pookkalmue" is really catching on which goes to prove good melody still rules. The lyrics are very inspiring. As Pa.Vijay quoted (in his interview on KTv yday, the lyrics are very common - anybody could have written it! How true! Maybe thatz why it reached everyone. It has become our "inspiring" song now! Earlier I made a post in this forum staying this song's tune was similar to "Naan Oru Sindhu" (Sindhu Bhairavi). Actually now I realised it resembles more to "Kannin Maniyae" (Manadhil Urudhi Vendum). However all 3 songs are by Chithra. I guess this should be another good break for Chithra (she's been long forgotten by our MDs). But folks, listen to this song on raaga.com. The version in musicindiaonline.com doesnt sound good (I realised that after I heard the song on TV).

Thanks KP for pointing it out!
BTW, does anyone remember Sivaji's 'pAAvai viLakku'? That too had the same theme.

The song "Manasukkulle.." is a real good melody. Anyone knows the raaga on which this song is based?

I don't know the raga of the "Manasukkulle.." song. But the first interlude of the song (the sax piece) is in Raag kaapi.

Sripathy,
Thanks for your response. I would like to add that the first part of the First BGM is Kapi but the sax piece ends with a touch of Desh. I believe that the Pallavi of "Manasukkulle.." is Kathyayini and the charanam is Sindhu Bhairavi. Can anyone confirm or correct me on this?

Saw 'Autograph', excellent attempt by Cheran. Though the movie is kinda sad in many places, we need more directors like him in Tamil. Songs are Ok, they slowly picked up and reached the top spots now. This not-so-overhyped movie is doing very well everywhere.

Music for this film is very mediocre, or at best average.
Considering the themeand the story spanning over different time periods, IR or ARR would have taken it to new heights. Bharadwaj's music sounds more like Sirpi/ SA Rajkumar fare.
Cheran had roped in 3 cameramen to shoot the 3 time periods (which in my opinion was just a gimmik and didn't offer anything). Wonder why he didn't think of such a gimmik for the music as well?

'Average' 'below average' or 'super'-- these are decided by the public. As of today, the songs are all hits and been sung and heard by the millions. That's the verdict!

Rasika:
IR is the best bet for this kinda story. With his BGM ability, he will make the visuals more powerful. But I think the lyrics are good and songs are hits because of the lines. I guess cheran himself penned all the songs (or Pa. Vijay)?
And yes, the movie is a super duper hit in Tamilnadu.
- From: sk (@ 66.57.14.197)
on: Mon Mar 15 12:35:20 EST 2004
Take any hit movie; there is only one formula-- all the people sitting in the theater must be able to identify him/her self with a particular scene in that movie. It need not be the same scene but any scene/situation, be it love, vengence, corruption, paasam or whatever it may be. He/she must have walked thru the shoes of that atrist in their lifetime. It makes him/her see the movie again and results in a hit!
TR took one aspect of the 'Autograph' and made 'Oru thalai raagam' and Cheran was not so confident and made three movie subjects into one!
So what, the movie is a hit!! That's what counts.

the movie is excellent, except for the second part (the kerala interlude), which shows a 'cultural gap' in understanding the malayalee culture. the episode demonstrate how the Tamilian mind percives the Keralite's day-to-day life, which appears as rather superficial in the movie. the character of lathika is a stereotype, with all the ingradients of the Tamil's notions on malayalee girls. obviously, cheran is on familiar ground in the first episode (neikkarapatti), but in kerala, he falters. probably this deficiency could have been avoided if kerala part of the story was entrusted to a malayalee writer.
.
despite the above fault, the movie is excellent, and thoruoghly enjoyable.
.
kudos to cheran.

Yes, I agree with you for the kerala part, good point. Even at times in the second part I felt the movie is kinda dragging little bit. Overall a very good movie.
I am so happy to see Cheran's success. In this hyped-up world, not-so-hyped-up director winning is a welcome change!

Well, a Telugu remake would mean, like other Tamil creators of the past, Cheran will end up being the loser. The Telugu guy (Cinematographer turned director Reddy) is already taking the credit for the screenplay (pOna POrathunnu Cheranukku 'Story' credit), and I am damn sure it will go to Hindi immediately with someone like Boney Kapoor producing it with the 'parasite' named Sathish Kaushik as director. He would of course ensure that Cheran gets no prominant credit (as usual they say it's a remake of a southie film and Cheran's name will come in fine print not in the promos but in the film's credits somewhere in between). Of course, in spite of copying the Telugu movie frame-by-frame (2nd generation loss) he will ensure that the scenes are butchered further, taking away all that was "natural" in the original movie and add all 'gloss' to it () and cast someone like Salman as hero!
Sorry Cheran! You're going to become yet another victim of the Punjabi Bollywood mafia! Ask Bala, he can vouch for that!
