I am not sure if this thread has been attempted
before: If so , Ravi..Knock this off!
Many pioneers in TFM have innovated in a variety
of ways to make TFM absolutely Great.
The Keyword here is UNIQUENESS!
I would love to identify songs that are truly unique.
Uniqueness could be in
--Construct of Music (Style,Instruments etc)
--Singing
--Lyrics
As my knowledge of MDs other than IR is very limited , I request Kanchana,SK,Gopal,RajaRam,
Ramki & others to pitch in for TFM prior to IR.
My Examples for Unique Songs:
1. maNNil Indha Kaadhal - Keladi kaNmanNi
-- For SPB's Singing
2. KalaivaaNiye - Sindhu Bhairavi
-- For the musical construct
Now.. Over to you folks..

Ennavo officele post seidhen. I got a mesg TFM server busy and my mesg got wiped out. I got this mesg 3-4 times today. Any problems ?
Mannaaru: Ennanga idhu MLV-ai ippadi oreadiya ozhicchutteenga ? MLV etthanaiyo paattu paadi irukkanga. Chinnanjiru Kiliye, Varugiral Unnaith thedi... I think there is a thread on her.
Gokul: Pl. mail me your thoughts on Pudhu/Marabuk Kavidhai in TFM. "Vaanam enakkoru bodhi maram..." is nice. So is "Netren Edhirile Nizhalgalin Nattiyam Endren Edhirile Nijangalin Dharisanam". How do you distinguish one from other ? "Ini varum Munivarum Thadumarum Kani Maram" - nice again. So if this is the unique Pudhuk Kavidhai, how do the other ones become Marabuk Kavidhai ? In pre-VM era, think about "Palliyaik Kandadhum Odhunginom Mazhaiyile". These are nice word-plays. I dont see how one could qualify them as Pudhuk Kavidhai.

IMO, Maximum used ragam-la either Kalyani or Mohanam thaan varum. Comparatively MMGowla songs are few.
I didn't understand how "aayiram nilave vaa" is unique.

Bhaskar: The longer each thread is the longer it takes to download.. athunaala thaan we thought the present sizes would be a good balance. If sufficient number of people feel (usu. 3 or 4 :-) otherwise, we can revise the point at which the thread is split.

Ravi: It works both ways. I find the Jeans thread very difficult to read. I also found long threads like "Puttham Puthu Pazhasugal" difficult.
Let each "current" page be of the same size. How about splitting all old responses into a maximum threads ?

I think revising the point at which the thread is split is a good Idea. Thanks for your response. But if it takes too much time from your side then you can forget about it for sometime.

In SB, IR used a different ragam(saramati) for 'Mari Mari Ninne'.Anybody know the original ragam for this song?

Murali
It was originally in Kambhoji, but it's hardly sung in that raga now.

The current page size limit is nothing for your guys in US, but for people on slow links it matters a lot. Let us think for a while before increasing the limit.

Digression - I suggest that instead of just
old responses
that we have now, at the beginning of the page, you could have two clickables:
Go to beginning of discussion
Last/Earlier response
This would satisfy both newcomers and regulars. Also, as mentioned by a few people, the current length is a bit too short. About twice this length per page would be just right.

Issue about Thamthana Thamthana Thalam Varum:
How do you count the length of a pallavi ? I counted using syllables ( Asai ? Nerasai, Niraiasai etc. ) and I get 19. Vaanengum Thanga Vinmeengal has 21. Another old song "Neela Vannak Kannane Unadhu Ennamelllaam Naanariven Kannaa En Kaiyaith Thodadhe" has 21 too. Anyway, I dont think we should be counting syllables; we should look at this a genre. Neela Vannak Kannane is the pioneer and there are at least two other songs with this long pallavi characteristic. Does it go against the "unique" filter ?

A few more long pallavis:
kaNNan enna sonnAn..siRu piLLaiyE..kaNvaLarAy.. (sAynthAdammA sAynthAdu)
kaNmaNiyE kAthalenbathu kaRpanaiyO kaaviyamO.. (ARilirunthu 60 varai)

Another long pallavi. Since this song is fast
we don't feel.

Digression here! I was reading all the old responses in the this thread especially relating to IR composing the first song with no instruments in Pagalil oru Nilavu. Later this was used in Thiruda Thiruda and Nammavar. It struck me that I need to relate this point when taling about Thiruda Thiruda. Doesn't the song Veerapandi Kottaiyele sound like a lift from Ottam Konda Rassave from Tirupurasundari a early 80 movie from IR.

Another Unique song is:
"dhumthru pumpum....dumthru pumpum.....
KadavuL amithu vaitha mEdai.."
from avaL oru thodarkathai by SPB & Saibaba & MSV.
The way MSV has used mimicry in that song in a happy
as well as soga/disappointed moody tune is very UNIQUE.
I can't think of any other song in TFM similar to this.
The tune and the mimicry noises blend so well to the
lyrics & the situation.

hello gokul/tfmlovers,
to add just a few unique songs, just like 'mannil indha kadhal's charanam was sung 'moochu vidAma', the charanam of the song 'kanmaniyE kAdhal enbadhu karpanayo kaviyamo' was also sung 'moochu vidama'

hello gokul/tfmlovers,
to add just a few unique songs, just like 'mannil indha kadhal's charanam was sung 'moochu vidAma', the pallavi itself of the song(not the charanam! i'm sorry) 'kanmaniyE kAdhal enbadhu karpanayo kaviyamo' was also sung 'moochu vidama'. starting from 'kankmaniye' until 'cholludhammA' it is sung 'moochu vidama' the song is from the film 'Arilirundhu arubadhu varai'(spb, sj, ilayaraja)

It was actually a love song in the film
'AmbikApathi'. A duet(sivAji vs bAnumathi).
MD G.Ramanathan has used the rAga 'mukAri'
in that song. mUkari is supposed to be used
in sad situations. the song is 'vAdA malarE
enadhanbE'. it is different in the sense that
a sad raga is used in a happy love song situation. i heard someone saying it was used
because a sorrowful sequence was to be followed
the song.

Haris:
Kanmaniyae kaadhal enbadhu is not a 'moochu vidama paadina' song. IR has cleverly super-imposed the voices (as I have mentioned in my earlier posting in this thread).
