“Now we can be proud to add IIR-India. Our children can listen to this along with the music of the great masters listed above. We are positive that this Symphony is going to inspire your children and we will have more of these produced by our children in the future.
These kind of projects are extremely important. They inspire us, improve our self-esteem and help us, give more to this world.”
Sridhar,
I will make some comments on what you have written in the above passage. Why not make our children listen to ‘Thiruvasagam’ as it is, in our traditional form, than in a form we have to tailor it ? There is a fundamental difference in spirit between a religious work as Thiruvasagam and a Western classical piece even when it has the religious bent. To make an attempt like this is one thing, but to make our children feel the spirit of the great work through it would be another ! And I certainly don’t understand why such an attempt would ‘inspire us, improve our self-esteem and help us, give more to this world’. I would rather cling to our orthodox form for any self-esteem, call me whatever you would.

Da Vinci,
Anything we do, should be for a good cause. This is the path that I have chosen. I am sure that there are equally viable directions to promote and boost "emotional intelligence".
I have no problem in your route. Sincerity is the key. Perceptions vary and that is alright.

Da Vinci,
Purity is one form of representation, Creativity is another.
Tamil Songs (esp thiruvasakam, thirupavai, thiruvenbava, Thirupugazh) have the fantastic quality of presentation in any meter or raaga.. If people have not received Thiruvasagam, then atleast now they will. Music can transcend boundaries.. Shankarabharanam was one example, This Symphony could be another..
But your point is well taken..

Da Vinci , basically 99% of western classical made before 19th century were composed for religious purpose. Hayden or anyone for that matter composed for religion only.
So there is no harm in going in this path. let us see this way, many more westerners will come to know about our epics, it is about time world knows about our music and litrature.
And bottom line - the man in charge - "Ilayaraja" knows both the subject quite well.
As a composer or as a divine personality, his credit history is quite good, He is capable of pulling it out in the right manner keeping our tradition intact in all aspects. I belive this.
Sridhar and others, all the best on the quest.

Hi Sridhar,
Personally I think it a good attempt. I dont know how the beauty of thiruvasagam is preserved in the translation.
The only problem I find with this project is that it can be a little more organised. There are no updates in the official site. It would be better if the site is updated with some kind of proper information instead of still saying the release is October. I read somewhere in the forum, the release is postponed. Can you update on this .. if you have any information and also ask the organisers to update the official site with some news?

Da Vinci,
I think this project is meant for spreading our religious greatness to westerners. The form of music they are used to is Western and hence this effort.
For our children, I think we can cling to orthodox form of Thiruvasakam as we can relate to that more than any other form.

Please give a global view before going to the insight, The dedication is clearly stated " For peace and harmony"
The moto is said to be notating Indian music in widely accepted, standard "world music format" so that Indian music gains its value in world music.
*No Question of spreading religion.
*No intention of spreading tamil or thiruvasakam
When huang swang came to Nalanda automatically cultural exchanges occured and the same is going to happen. The attempt made by Maestro is new and modern and will make secondary impact on spreading religious message and secondary impact on spreading Tamil and thiruvasakam. Please note "Only selected hymns from Thiruvasakam are selected for the project" Not the whole. Thanks.

I think all of us are missing the point here. TIS is not a religious venture but a musical one. In practice, if one wants to sing Karnatic music, he has to go find a teacher and then stay with him for years to learn to sing. Great musicians of other styles neither have the time nor the need to do so as they already are busy and know the basics of music. A russian conductor can play Beethoven by looking at the notes. He can not do so by looking at a book of Thyagaraja. This is what IIr is trying to accomplish. Due to his bi-fold love for Tamil and Music, he has chosen Thiruvasakam[only some selected verses] for this purpose.'oru kallil yirandu maangaai adippadhu pOla'!! While writing notes for a music, he will also be letting the fame and richness of Tamil.
"thiruvaasakatthukku urugaar oru vaasakatthukkum urugaar" I hope it is crystallizing now! More on this, if needed. Enough for now!

Sreedhar Seetharam and crew,
Is there a way to find out if the contributions are tax exempt ( here in US, as some kind of gift donations/charities), I think, one can contribute more than 5$ if this is clarified by contacting appropriate people. I think, donations to foreign countries are not tax exempt, but I am not sure about TIS project, if this is coming from a foundation.
Please let us know

As Sridhar mentioned, selected verses are being taken up for this project. IR had undertaken a tour of T.N, met with several experts and other groups to help decide on what verses he is going to use in this project. Remember reading this somewhere.
Sridhar should be encouraged for taking the efforts and being a part of this project. I hope it turns out to be a resounding success.

As of now, it is NOT tax exempt in USA. We are trying to get that cleared also. And that's another reason why we have fixed it as "aaLukku aindhu dollar" as per IIR's wishes. He wants this project be known to everyone and fuded by everyone.
