Sreedhar, Mahendran directed quite a few movies like Nenjathai Killathe, Nandu, Johny etc.
As bb mentioned Mahendran paid very close attention, I believe, to the tune before he in visualized the song in his mind. In "Paruvame pudhiya paadal paadu", in the first interlude, the violins at the start of the interlude are interrupted briefly with a short harmonium piece and you wonder what was the corresponding change in the visuals.Mahendran stops showing their jogging and the shot is of a small kid, in all innocence, smiling at us. Like this there are quite a few other instances where some small details in songs have been paid attention to, by Mahendran.
This movie had the other classic "Naan Paada varuvaai". A great freaky Kalyani song rendered by SJ in an inimitable manner. The song has Kunnakudi Vaidyanadan-like "konashtais" played on the vioin at the end :-)

This song isan audio-video treat. It was Ashok Kumar's thaniaavarthanam as it were. You just had to fall in love with the cherubic "Anju". Time is sometimes very cruel especially so on the fairer sex.See Anju of today, the vagaries of harmone have made her now in the league of WWE wrestler.
Yes, before i forget, great music by IR!

Sreedhar, Mahendran was a director who brought in a whiff of fresh air in tamil cinema. His movies were visual treats. He used songs in the background with telling effect, used less dialogues and as Vijay pointed out, took great care in his shots and camera angles.
He directed Johnny, Mullum Malarum, Udhirip pookkaL, Nenjaththaik kiLLaadhE, Poottaadha PoottukkaL and Nandu.
Udhirip pookkaL was based on a short story by Pudhumaippiththan. Balu Mahendra and Mahendra were about to take tamil films to a great age, before AVM and S.P.Muthuraman came in and buried Tamil Films.

Mahendran movies are a landmark in TFM. It is unfortunate such a great Director (creator) went unnoticed.
It is indeed a pity that Rajini and others (probably IR) had to rally and recommend to get mahendran a chance to direct a film (Kai Kodukkum Kai). I guess he made a kind of docuemtary after that but am not sure if it made to the screen

Karthi,
Can u tell me to which other song U can cut and paste the Azhagiya Kannae interludes and not feel any difference?Just to know....
Strangely, this is something I have observed in ARR and THE OTHER assorted MD's that make up the TFMscene today.
Let's take Azhagiya Kannae...if you analyse it independently, maybe, what you say holds water. Im only saying MAYBE ..because I dont know why you feel so...I'll just make a guess...maybe, the interlude before the third stanza struck you as being tangential.
I'll explain it as follows:
See, a song cannot be independent of its situation...thats something which IR has imbibed in us.I sometimes think, if I had not grown up listening to all those IR songs, I could probably enjoy all these MTV-type songs, which are basically, stand-alone and the reason I dont like these is that they simply dont come wrapped in a situation. If we have to consider the videos which come with them as the situation for these songs, I'm sure it is easy to aghree that these hardly make sense, either with, or without the associated songs. With rare exceptions.
On the other hand, IR songs rarely deviate from the situation.
So it is with azhagiya kannae. You have to see the song in terms of its situation....basically, the song shows Ashwini enjopying the antics/pranks of her children...and towards the end, the song meanders to her helplessness against a tyrannical husband...I can remeber thathaunting scene where mahendran shows her sitting in a pensive mood with the children playing nearby and the score to match. Here, the situation turns from the playful gaiety of the children to the melancholic helplessness of Ashwini. Hence, the change in the interlude...the tangential shoot.
If, on the other hand, you mean the other two interludes in the song as being digressive ..I have no explanations :).
There is also a point raised by B.Lenin, the editor of the movie in some TV Prog. Somewhere towards the endof the interlude before the second stanza, there is a visual showing a goat 'thulli'fying(couldnt htink of the english equivalent of thulli!)...and the in the bkg,Raja will play a beautiful flute piece , that actually makes you feel the thullal of the goat. He said Mahendran had the song planned out almost to detail..before asking raja to compose..so, imagine how much thought must gnani have put into the song. Also, note the visual where Ashwini and the boy wash clothes...little anju is simply playing in the banks in this visual...and on observing the other two 'pizhunjufy' the clothes , she pizhunjufies her pavadai, which is dripping with water. It is so cute to watch...and HEAR ! I am sure that whatever be the shrtcomings of those interludes from your musical point of view, the fact that they brought out each and every emotion, detail of the scene, IMO, makes up for it. I dont think this song should be quoted as an example of "INTERLUDE DEVIATING FROM MAIN SONG"...because, they were supposed to, considering that is what the scene requires. Maybe, you have many such songs , where you felt that the Interludes deviate. But I feel this song can be justified.
And , ofcourse, I would like to believe that if raja deviated, it is with the same reason as cited above for this song ! :)
I guess this is what makes IR great...the songs so beautifully blend with the situation. I have no knowledge of music, meter, tempo etc. SO,perhaps, I am missing your point.
But even if they did deviate, I thought those were two awesome interludes in Azhagiya kannae...I cant imagine someone can actually be irritated by those
:). Ofcourse, tastes differ....

To simply put - my pick for a soga song anyday. And that is intentionally why I dont listen to it since it makes atleast the follwing one hour depressing. One of my favourites delivered with super high dose of melancholy and vividly picturized by Mahendran. The second interlude flute is highly reminiscent of "aaraariro paadiyadhaaro" 's opening flute piece. So unless u want to cry, dont hear :-)

bb- thanks for this wonderful song. Among the best ever in the long list of SJ-IR hits. SJ has brought to life the poignant lyrics of Kannadasan.
IR gave SJ three solos in the film and each one was unique in its own way. 'Naan paada varuvaai'is an enchanting aatrangarai cutcheri, with SJ excelling in the mischievous deviations as well. 'Poda poda pokkey' was sung superbly for an old lady, but the lyrics were konjam over!
The only non-SJ song was 'Kalyanam paaru' by SP Shailaja.
Uthiripookal, based on 'Sitrannai'(?)by Pudhumaippithan, starred Vijayan, Ashwini, Madhumalini, Saratbabu, Charulatha, Premi, Charuhasan and Samikkannu. The little boy, brother of Anju, was Haja Sheriff (or was it his thambi Kaja Sheriff?)
bb- one more Mahendran film was 'Metti'. Mahendran's latest venture (for NFDC) starring Arvind Swami, Gauthami and Ranjitha is still lying in the cans, though it was completed long back.

Saravanan, it was Kaja Sheriff (the guy who comes as an interesting sidekick in andha 7 naatkaL).
Mahendran's latest film was called Saasanam. It was supposed to be based on the rich chettinaadu clans. I had high expectations from that movie, but unfortunately, it might never see the light of day.
Was the lyrics by Kannadasan? I thought IR wrote the lyrics himself.

Azhagiya kanne is a song
that creates so much sogam even when you listen it now. So many ideas are spontaneously woven into the song, that make you sad: the musical bellish intro - telling you there are kids in the song. See a similar intro to 'endhan ponvannamae'.
The mellow flute intro playing against a hesitant folk percussion, this theme expanded further during the interludes. The whispery voice of S.Janaki - very introspective. It is a rare non-keechu voice of Janaki. Reminds of 'Madha un kovilil' voice style. Gentle Flowing Tabla.
Lonely solo flute of the interludes. Mellow Strings, vibraphone chords. Very smooth, heartbreaker.
Some early Raja hits in the same style or song situation/mood which affect you in a similar way: Enthan ponvanname, Uchchi vagundeduthu (Which SG emulated in Pattu vanna rosavaam), Nallavarkellam Satchigal rendu onru manasatchi, Pillai nila irandum vellai nila.
