Subbu- Of course you are right- Kanni rasi is by PS- I must have typed in a hurry:-((
I think the Madhuri solo in Kumara Vijayam is 'Mannargudi machchan vandhu ninnaaru'
Ninnaye rathiendru is from Kanne Kaniyamuthe- I didn't include it as bb had already mentioned it.

bb,
I wish you had opted for "poonchittu" instead. The happy/sad, poor/rich juxtapositions and PS' smoother than velvet voice in that song were colossal. Nevertheless, thanks for picking a lesser known MD for a change.

I wish you had opted for "poonchittu" instead. The happy/sad, poor/rich juxtapositions in the lyrics and PS' delicate lullaby voice in that song were colossal. Nevertheless, thanks for picking a lesser known MD for a change.

Ouch, I thought my post was lost when my connection died. So I retyped the post. Sorry for the double-post (well, almost identical).

Saravanan,
Thanks for the info on Devarajan. "Velli Radhangal" is a fabulous song. I had attributed it to MSV all this time. We need to revisit Devarajan again without fail on SOTD.

What a soulful song! KJJ at his melancholic best.
Brings back a lot of memories.
Who needs IRish songs when we have these kind of songs. :)

- Sung by TMS and PS. MD is S.Parthasarathy. *s SSR and Vijayakumari. The film is by Kalaignar (?)
- Manisegaran writes:
Sathya, you are right about Avan Pithana. The MD is S.Parthasarathy. The songs are:-
1.Mapillai Manasukku-P.Suseela
2.Andavan Padaippil-LRE
3.Ayiram Mutham Tharuven tharuven-P Suseela
4.Kilakku Veluthathadi-TMS&PSuseela
5.Iraivan Irulkirana-TMS and P.Suseela
- Parthasarathy was the MD for Paal Manam, Avan Piththanaa and Kalyana Mandapam.

bb- The MD is R Parthasarathi (Rangaswami Parthasarathi). He was the MD for :
Magadalanaattu Mary-1957
Kalyana Mandapam-1965
Avan Piththana-1966
Paalmanam-1968
Kalyana Oorvalam-1970
SJ's first song (to be released) was in RP's music: 'Kannukku nere' in Magadanaattu Mary- a breezy duet with PBS.
RP's younger brother R Ramanujam also was the MD for a couple of films- who can forget his lovely creation-SPB's 'Ponnenbatho poovenbatho' from Annaparavai?

Avan Piththana had story-dialogues by Kalaignar. Songs were written by Kannadasan.

Saravanan, thanks for the info. Wasn't "koondhalilE nei thadavi" in KalyaaNa oorvalam?
- From: Saravanan (@ 213.42.1.174)
on: Tue Dec 17 05:14:21 EST 2002
yes, bb- 'Koondhalile nei thadavi' is indeed from Kalyana Oorvalam. KJY-SJ. An unusual duet filmed on Nagesh and Manimala(?),-for Nagesh is Manimala's chithappa in the film! Maybe the only duet in tfm between a chithappa and his niece!Of course,it is not a love duet- Manimala sings of her dreams regarding her marriage and Nagesh, who overhears her singing to herself, continues the song. (You can hear SJ exclaim 'Chithappa'! in the interlude when Manimala discovers that it is Nagesh who is singing).
This is perhaps the 2nd duet of KJY-SJ in tfm. Their first was 'Paruvamothi pazhagum pothu'- Panam Tharum Parisu-1965. MD-Chellamuthu.
Kalyana Oorvalam had some other good songs as well- Oorellaam Paakku vaithu-PS, Endhan Uyir Kadhalan Kannan Kannan-PS and Aandavan Mugathai paarkkanum-TMS.

Is it the same Rangaswamy Parthasarathy of Oriental Records who produced albums like 'How To Name It'?

Saravanan,
I remember Nagesh plays "ANNan" role to Manimala in "Kalyana oorvalam"..
KR Vijaya was Nagesh's pair, right?
A question:
From which film this song is "Nilave nee maraindhadhenna...." by PB Sreenivas and followed by "Amudhe..." by P Susheela. The actors are Srikanth and Manimala. Is this also from Kalayana Oorvalam?

on: Tue Dec 17 22:42:01 EST 2002
Subbu- Nagesh played Manimala's chithappa in KV-I am sure of it.
As regards to your question, I think the song you are referring to is 'Nilave unakku kurai ethu'from Karpooram-1967. MD- DB Ramachandran
Peter Pan, you are right- he is the same Parthasarathi. He is now based in New York.

Song of the Day: azhagiya kaNNE from udhirip pookkaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/azhagiya.rm
- MD: IR. Directed by Mahendran. Sung by SJ.

I liked the picturisation in the following songs:
2)Azhagiya kanne uravugal neeye in "Udhirippookkal". The song has nothing artificial about it as against songs that are picturised in movies. It shows the genuine love of a woman for her man and her children. The love between the children and the mother are shown as a melliya nool poondra paasam which is hidden but strong. The song is picturised in such a way that the woman who is in grief is a mother who has to take care of her little children and also has to think about her future without her husband who is not hers anymore. Her sadness, the children's innocence and the unknowingness of the future is so beautifully portrayed. The lost look in the mother's eyes (Aswini) and her tender love for her children are expressed beautifully. The line "manjal endrendrum nilaianadhu mazhai vandhalumE kalaiadhadhu" shows her strong love for her husband. The two children playing around the banks of the river, helping their mom in washing clothes and having fun is portayed for the line "sorgam eppodhum nam veetilE adhai naan kangirEn un kannilE". I just love this song.

"azhagiya kaNNE uRavugaL neeyE" is one song which affected me much.
This song from mahendran's uthirippookkaL shows why a deceased wife tolerates all the troubles given to her by her husband. She lives only for her children. She says in one scene, "if not for the children, i wud 've thrown the thAli u tied on ur face".
The song portrays her agony as well as the love she has for the children.
A slight change in the tune and SJ's soulful rendition show all these emotions.
At the end of first stanza Sj sings,
"nam veettil enrum chandrodayam
nAn kaNdEn veLLI nilA" -she sings it happily showing her affection for the children.
Again the next stanza starts with "sorgam eppOdhum nam kayilE adhai nAn kAngirEn un kaNNilE" with a happy mood but it changes to a sorrowful mood when she sings "en jeevan mAngalyam dhAn". The beauty of the song is the way the mood is changed seamlessly as the stanza progresses.
- I once saw an interview with B.Lenin, who did the editing for this song. He called it a landmark in tamil films. A sequence where a sheep jumps over a fallen tree trunk, synchronizes with the music so perfectly, that Lenin said it was as though there was some unknown force that bound Mahendran, IR and him together.

Great song. Has this director Mahendran directed other films? I think SJ sings "en deivam mAngalyam thAn" not "en jeevan". Then, Shankar must have meant something else when he wrote "deceased wife". :-)
On a more serious note, a tidbit related to udhirip pookkaL [1979] -- I heard that the hero, Vijayan, is struggling nowadays. A couple of years back, I heard that he is homeless, alcoholic, and hangs around Choolaimedu. Very sad.
