All of us would have had the experience of having been emotionally affected (moved, exhilirated, etc.) upon listening to a song (some song or the other). So, why don't we put down the songs that have affected us so, and also mention what feelings the song(s) evoked in us, upon hearing it...

shankar: what u say is right. to compare itself is an insult to the great man from ettayapuram.but, many still equalize vande mataram with patriotism.

There are many ways to make money, especially in music. VM and ARR could have released an album full of love songs with racy lyrics and raked in money. That they got together and did their tribute to the nation should be appreciated. I feel damn proud that there is an internationally released CD with a good Thamizh song in it.

why this sudden distinction between desabakthi songs and others?? we perfectly have the right to compare two patriotic songs as much as we sit and compare love songs. the fact that ARR has put a tamizh song in an international CD is in no way justification to the fact that it does not evoke as much emotion as the song i mentioned. i certainly feel that there was more glitz in ARR's work than tribute to the nation.

balaji, our takes on this differs, but I understand clearly your stance and that's fine. This is my take: Thai Mannae vanakkam is a spirited song that is a tribute to a free nation's independance, it's pure celebration. Bharathi's song gains more resonance by being the voice of a resilient underdog since it stems from the longing of a repressed society fighting for independance.

a favourite song of mine is
chinna chinna thural enna
ennai konchum saaral enna
from senthamizh paattu. the tune, the background, and the melodious voice of spb make me feel elated when i hear the song. the lyrics are pedastrian, but is masked by the mellifluous music.only IR+MSV combination can bring such a song to life(spoilt by prabhu, of course, with his chinna thambi hangover).

I was listening to 'rOsaap poo ravikkaikaari' this morning! And was amazed to hear, "maaman oru naaL malliappoo kuduththaanaam"..
What a innovotive tune.. and nice folkish beat & rythm in BG! SPB at his best.. There is a mild sense of "humour" [ekkaaLam?] in his voice. And his voice sounds entirly different. SPS's voice sounds very innocent & expresses a eager!
I doubt whether SPB himself can sing this again! Lovely "rendition" & change of voice!! Lyrics are funny or tries to put the "karuththu?" in a hilarious tone!
A innovative, off-beat tune ... Its simply stays away from traditional style and fits very well for a village background! But, wht happened this, village-style, folkish IR now? Was he lost in Western Classical?

bull,
Incidentally, i was listening to "uchchi vagundeduthu" from the same movie. The mood ,as u all know, is entirely different from the song mentioned above. What a song?? This is worth mentioning in the "emotions in IR songs" thread.
I listened to "ennullil edho Engum geetham" too, from the same movie!!

Oh.. yes.. its a marvellous song! For unknown reasons, uchchi vahundheduththu and pattu vaNNa rOsaavaam, paarththa kaNNu moodaathaam puts me in similar mood! I often get confused with the interludes of each other!

uchchi vahudedhuthu also shows how simple lyrics can be. very difficult to find such simple and straightforward lyrics today.

"azhagiya kaNNE uRavugaL neeyE" is one song which affected me much.
This song from mahendran's uthirippookkaL shows why a deceased wife tolerates a
ll the troubles given to her by her husband. She lives only for her children. She
says in one scene, "if not for the children, i wud 've thrown the thAli u tied
on ur face".
The song portrays her agony as well as the love she has for the children.
A slight change in the tune and SJ's soulful rendition show all these emotions
.
At the end of first stanza Sj sings,
"nam veettil enrum chandrodayam
nAn kaNdEn veLLI nilA" -she sings it happily showing her affection for the chil
dren.
Again the next stanza starts with
"sorgam eppOdhum nam kayilE
adhai nAn kAngirEn un kaNNilE" with a happy mood but it changes to a sorrowful m
ood when she sings
"en jeevan mAngalyam dhAn"
The beauty of the song is the way the mood is changed seamlessly as the stanza p
rogresses.

A very nice discussion thread indeed! I really wish to list my most favourite senti songs, but think that some may have already been listed. So, I'll limit to songs that have not been mentioned, and appealed to me.
It's amazing to see that ppl didn't consider T.Rajendar at all!! ( Disclaimer: I'm no blind supporter of TR!! :-) )
1. One of his masterpieces is 'Idhu kuzhandhai paadum' from Oruthalai Raagam. The speciality of the song is, every line of the song is about something impossible. I'm yet to hear another such a song that is rich in language at the same time expressing the character's mood. Of course, none other than SPB could have rendered this song so nicely.
Idhu kuzhandhai paadum thaalaattu
Idhu iravu nera boopaalam
Idhu merkil thondrum udhayam
Idhu nadhiyilladha Odam!
Verum kaatril uli kondu.. silaiyondrai vadikkiren
Verum naaril karam kondu.. poomaalai thodukkiren
Vidinthuvitta pozhudhil kooda.. vinmeenai paarkiren
Uravuraadha pennai enni.. ulagai naan verukkiren!
(Idhu..)
Nadai marandha kaalgal thannin.. thadayaththai paarkiren
Vadam izhandha theradhu ondrai.. naaLthorum izhukkiren
Siragizhandha paravai ondrai.. vaanathil paarkiren
Viruppamillaa pennai enni.. Naalthorum vaazhgiren!
...
Touchy ain't it?!
2. The other one is 'Oru pon maanai naan kaana' from Mythili Ennai Kaathali. I dont remember the lyrics, but I'm certain that they are really beautiful.
Needless to say, TR has also produced 'classics' like 'Ngoppan mavane.. Ngoppan mavane.. dandanakkara.... danakkara dandanakkara' (Film: Uravai Kaaththa Kili). But, let's appreciate him keeping in mind songs like the above two.
Then, few other songs that touched me are,
i. Kannil Enna kaar kaalam - 'Un kannil neer vazhindhaal'
Sung by the heroine after losing her brother, when one needs most support. Listen to it, and you'll love it!
ii. Annanenna Thambiyenna - 'Dharama Dhurai'
Brothers cheated elder brother, and he burts into emotion.
'Paambukkum Thelukkum paal vaithu
naan kandadhu sothanaiyum vethanaiyumthaan...
nenjam vendhadhadi sogathinilthaan..'
Well rendered by KJ Yesudoss.
iii. Nilavu Thoongum Neram - 'Kunguma Chimizh'
The lines are not very coherent, but I get very very very nostalgic even as I think about this song. Reminds me of those no-worry days of '85 when I used to remain awake until late night to listen to classic songs from Madras Radio.
'Naan unai paarthathu porva jenma bandham
Vazhvilum Thaazhvilum vilgidaadha nesam'
iv. 'Sevvavnam Panneer Thoovum' - Naan Sivappu Manidhan
In the lines of 'Paasamalar' style songs, but really touchy.
Ezhezhu Jenmam Indha annan thangai sontham vendum
Ennaalum endhan pakkam thaaye nee vendum
Un kaalgal illaamal en kaalgal pogumo
Un kangal illaamal en kangal paarkumo
En vaanam vidivadhum, pagal mudivadhum
Undhan paarvaiyal...
Lovely lyrics.
I guess I'll stop right here. More later.

nTv,
u reminded me another masterpiece from TR,
"vAsamilla malaridhu
vasandhathai thEdudhu
vaigayillA maduraidhu
meenAtchiyai thEdudhu"
In fact, TR was considered a threat to IR with his superb scores and lyrics in oru thalai rAgam and another movie. Then came those songs like "ponnAna manasE poovAna manasE" where TR tried his own voice and failed miserably.
One good thing he did for TFM is that he marked the end of TMS' career.remember, "noolum illai vAlum illai vAnil pattam viduvEna" :-))))
