Of late there had been enough panning on Deva for giving wonderful "remix / xerox" songs. But I feel that he has done a decent job in giving some original compositions too. eg.
(1)Porul thedum bhoomiyil (By chitra in Kalki)
(2)Metti Metti velli metti (By SJ in Pullai kuttikkaran)
(3)Konja Naal Poruthalaiva
(4)Un udhattoram sivappai
I wish TFM fans contribute to this thread without digressing to cast criticizms on him.

IMO, Deva's "Enakenna poranthava rakkai katti paranthava ivathaan", was a great number from KIZHAKKU KARAI. This one had two great BGMs....and I think it was not `copied' by Deva from any other source....
His earlier movie, a Satyaraj-Bhanupriya starrer also had some good numbers from Deva which sounded original.
At that time, one reader of "Kalkandu", asked Mr. Lena Tamizhvaanan a question about IR for which he replied something like this: "thamizh thirai isai ennum Odu thalathil Ilayaraaja vegu thOOram munnaniyil Odi vittAAr....aah!!! sattrE thOOrathil yarO arugE varuvathu pOla therigirathE....athu DevAA vAAGa irukumO?"

rameshb:
That beautiful guitar piece that repeats in
chinna chinna kuyilE is same as the tune
of an old hindi song which starts as achchaa
tO hum chaltE hain.
The song, Eshwara, vaanum maNNum friendship
from the same movie, K.Thondrinaal is an excellent
original one by Deva. I like that song very much.
Any others?

ragapriyan,
My intention in reviewing those songs were only to manifest the melodious nature and not to find out if they were originals. I wanted to post this in a old thread 'melodies of deva', but could not revive it and Ravi suggested me to post it here. However i could not track down the (any)guitar pieces to the 'achcha to hum chalthe hain' song (Aan milO sajna). If you could be more specific about the exact place like charaNam, 1st or 2nd interlude etc, it would be helpful. Speaking of haunting guitar pieces, the guitar piece that follows the third line of shobana's charaNam part is being repeatedly used by sabesh murali in many films for BGM, including the same film kaNNethirE thOndrinAL(in ESK also).

Guys, have you heard "O Madhubala" ? I think I have mentioned this before, but can't quite resist talking/thinking about this song. A really superb melody with Balu peaking. "Priya Priya Yen Priya" is a very good song too. There was an obscure movie I had seen, with NizhalgaL Ravi acting as an auto driver. This movie had a super duet by Chitra & SPB, "Maalayile therku moolayile moganam paaduthu maanguyil". Somebody mentioned "Yenakkenna piranthava rakka katti paranthava".

I would like to list the songs by Deva which were good ones:
Pudumai piththan - Unnai kanden manathil minnal rendered by Swarnalatha.I rate this song as one of the great songs of Swarnalatha after "maalayil yaaro" and "porale ponnuthaye".
- 1.2.98 el unnai santhithen and sirikathe ennai sithaikathe also from the same movie.
Unnudan. - Apart from Kobamo en mel kobamo, cochin madapura, vanam tharaiyil vanthu nindrathe are good.
If possible, try to hear these songs and comment on this.(may be it may be copy also).

ramseshbb,
I seriously wish, this thread will not get the same treatment, as other deva thread received. Im also happy to find out more souls, who are able to see and appreciate good things in deva songs.
One good recent deva's melody, 'malavika malavika'
from unnai thedi. vandalapa vandalapa from the movie cheedanam is a very good song from deva.

Is 'bharathikku kaNNammaa, nee enakku' song by dEva, a copy of ''rangu barE bhaathal sE' from the hindi movie, Chandini?

Good question! the first two words 'bhArathikku kaNNamma' (and 'neeyenakku uyirammA') sound like they have the same sandham as 'rangu bharE bhAdhal sE' . But the rest of the song is different from 'chAndhini... oh mere chAndhini'.

deva is quite adept in copying. lets not doubt his credentials in that. he picks up only a portion of one song, combines it with another portion of another song, and repeats this cycle :)

"Vanna Nilavae" the classic ballad with excellent production and great acoustic guitars is apparently a Deva original. Though the movie and soundtrack for, "Ninaiththen Vandhaai" were a copy of a Telugu movie, I guess this song was a Deva original. So there alone is significant evidence that given the room to show his stuff, Deva can compose a head-to-foot original memorable tune.
Another sadly overlooked number by Deva is "Nagumo" from Arunachalam. This tune is a jambalaya of rhythms and instruments that hooks me everytime.

Udhaya,
I think even that song was from the Telugu original film "Pelli Sandhadi" or something by M.M.Keeravani.I do not know the song exactly but I can tell u that it is not a Deva original.

isnt nagumo a rehash of famous carnatic kriti nagumo??

Hrishi: The original of Vanna Nilave was in Chandrakauns Raga. Deva used this in the interludes of the song, but didn't actually lift the song as far as I know. Vanna Nilave is predominantly in SivaRanjani.
Chandy: Thyagarajar's Nagumomu is in the Raga Abheri(like Kannodu) whilst Deva's Nagumo is in Bilahari(Most of it). Nothing like the original....Udhaya is right. Deva has orchestrated it quite well and has only used a few Abheri notes towards the end.

Hi,
Thanks Geetha
Another good/decent song is Poojavaa Poojavaa from Priyamudan. The tune I think is original but the music in the song is flicked from Viju Shah(Gupt) who in turn flicked it from ARR(Love Birds song - No Problem) . Tamil to Tamil !!!!!

geetha,
it could be -aathoram thoopukulle- swarnalatha.
IMO, Deva is getting better in providing some
eye catching interludes. Anyone still doubts his ability, I ask them Chcek out this song ' nilave kondu vaa from vallee. In the Second interlude, He did a great job in mixing the tune 'kakai sirakanile', which blend so well with the whole music arrangement.
Kanave kalayada is one of my recent favorite song. sandiya sandiya from ninaviruukum varai is a good melody too.
The only problem I have with him is, he is using hariharan too much.
He deserve much more than what he is being treated in this forum. :-)

Geetha, thanks for the info. I istened to that nagumo song only once sometime back and I could recollect some shades of abheri in it.
Hari, Kanave Kalaiyadhe is a wonderful song and is one of my recent favourites too. :)
"The only problem I have with him is, he is using hariharan too much.

Hari, the main problem with deva is that hes using too much of others' work than his own. His credibility as a MD is totally lost. He'll be always remembered as a copycat by TFM fans. Its true that he deserves a better treatment in this frum than what hes currently getting. If hes going to copy a few songs from here and there in some albums, and compensates with some wonderful numbers, the copies could be forgotten! But deva is consistent in his copies and, album after album he comes out with xerox replicas. Even now, when deva comes up with something original, TFM fans perceive it as "origin yet to be known/ascertained" rather than acknowledge it as his own composition. Such is his reputation!!

Chandy, how true. I sometimes listen to a good number of his and then think, where did/could this have come from.
Hari, I too am in love with Kanave kalaiyaadhe. When I mentioned it a while ack, i was spat upon. It's good to see others who understand that wonderful number in Desh too. I also liked Chinna Chinna Kiliye and Eswara too.
What about the songs in Klallazlagar? The Azlaga song was excellent, as was Thoonda Thoonda and also the SPB Charan/Anuradha song in Kaafi...It was quite a commendeable job by Deva. Also in Chinna Raja, ther were some good numbers. I also liked his songs in Iniyavale, Thendral Vandhu was very well done.
Hari: I beg to differ, I feel that he has used Hariharan quite effectively. I am in Love with Hariharan's voice, so I guess I would say that:)

geetha,
I loved almost all the songs in kanaedhire thordinal, Infact I wrote a review in indolink.com, sometime back about this wonderful album.
I too like hariharan, but he is not versatlile enough to sing all type of songs, IMO. In unnai thedi, he spoiled a very good song 'nalai kalai nerril varuvaye'. I even dare to say, UK is much versatile singer than HH.
But if you consider songs like 'nee kathru', malavika malavika, he is the best one to sing.
chandy,
yes I agree, it is very difficult to authorize his original songs, but I dont think, anyone can doubt songs like kanave kalayadhe, or udothoram sivappu, or nalai kalai neril varuvala.
P.S
I have been getting few fan emails, as if I am hariharan ( of course I am , but not the singer hariharan). I dont know, why, or how, but
I can say, it is flattering ( just by having this name :-)),
That is not the main reason, I like/hate his voice though :-)

the problem with hariharn is his difficulty in high pitch. He tries to perform brigas at higher notes and fails invariably. If he controls his rendering by not doing such vocal acrobatics (which i think only SPB is capable of , among the contemporary singers), he would certainly do well. I mentioned about his screaming 'thAtchAyani...' in the song 'naalai kaalai nEril varuvALA' in my other posting. He also does same thing in the song '1.2.98'il unnai santhithEn'. He also struggled in 'iLavEniR kAla panjami'. Have you guys listened to 'oru nAL un vizhigaL' from 'aanantha mazhai' where his high pitch singing is not all that bad. This is another melodious number in which deva has used the haunting chorus humming from titanic.
